The problem is that most people will only associate the Palm as a PIM device. The majority can only be lured into the Palm by still touting the PIM that everyone is aware of, and then coming out with all the other cool features that it can do. I don’t think it can work to market the Palm mainly as a video device, for instance because its main function still is PIM regardless of what people say. I guess on one side, it can be marketed for all the cool stuff and the entertainment features but on the other hand, still don’t alienate those who love the PIM feature. It’s still important to focus on the stability and the history of the Palm. But, that’s my opinion.

Unfortunately, Palms will continue to be plagued by the stereotype of the old monochrome PIM device. They aren’t like the iPods which came out of the blue with their sleek, cool and hip advertising so that’s what people will associate with nowadays.

There will be some people who weren’t aware of the old Palm Pilot commercials and marketing who could be influenced by the new marketing and there will still be those who have their own misconceptions.

I think the Palm really needs to revamp their marketing campaign (and looking by the big banners in NYC on the Treo), it looks like it’s in the right direction. More print ads, more TV commercials to focus on the business and the young who will pay the money for the cool devices as somewhat of a status symbol.

Still Palm’s fault. The video ipod’s main focus is still music, but its recent ad still showed off it’s video abilities nicely with that vid clip of a U2 concert followed by other uses like album art, pics, slideshows, games, TV, and homebrew videos. Palm should considering doing something like that on TV. Show a bunch of ppl playing games, working with Office files, listening to music, and then looking up info all on one device.

I’d have to object on saying the ipod is inferior MP3 player. It’s actually superior IMO. Huge capacity for only few hundred $$. It would take thousands of $$ to match that in SD cards, and that’s w/o the cost of the PDA itself.

I myself don’t need that much capacity though, which is why I still prefer a T|T3 over an ipod, as it’s nice to play games (other than breakaway and whatever else is on the ipod), multimedia, and loads of productivity on one device.

I’m not saying that the iPod is an inferior mp3 player. I’m sure that it’s great for what it offers. I’m only saying that it is little more than a hard drive that is capable of playing music. Although after saying that, it shouldn’t be too hard for Apple to get back to its Newton roots and boost it back from the dead and make the iPod what the Palm should be.

I think the problem with Palm is that they probably don’t have the cash and cash flow to go out and do the big marketing campaign like TV commercials, like what the iPod did. If they spend the money on that, making something that appeals to the young teens and the business people, they will get Palm back into the fold again.
