Just a quick note to everyone reading the blog. I’ve recently set up a Frappr map link on the side bar. If you would like to participate and add yourself to the map, please feel free to do so that everyone who views this blog can have a good overall view of who views the blog. Don’t feel pressured in doing it. It’s all for fun. I just wanted to make this a bit more interactive than just reading stuff from me all the time. And feel free to add in your comments (at the bottom) regarding stuff that may be related or suggestions. Thanks!
Most people who have a color screen Palm will most likely claim that having pictures on their Palm is quite important for them. Why? First of all, in this day when we are all talking about digital pictures, whether it be having a digital camera, getting them digitized and burned on a CD, or viewing photos on web pages, or sharing digital photos with friends, it’s hard to not use the color capabilities of the Palm to display and view pictures, especially those of our families and friends.

$500 Picture Book and $50 Digital Photo keychain
There are lots of digital photo devices that are out there that are trying to replace the old picture frame that can store many digital images and display them. But why spend money on a gadget from places like Brookstone or Sharper Image for a digital photo album when you already have that capability in the Palm? Even if you don’t own a Palm device, it doesn’t make sense to spend $50 to a few hundred dollars on a one function device when you can use the amount of money on a Palm that can do that and much more? These digital picture devices can’t do more than just display a picture. It can’t help you organize, calculate, budget, play mp3s, videos, etc. I’ve already spent a few postings discussing why a Palm is better than other digital devices out there so I won’t continue rehashing it up again.
The ability to hold an entire photo album of pictures is very much a reality. In the earlier days of the monochrome Palm, although the capability to display digital pictures was there, unless you love viewing them in black and white, the idea didn’t really take off. Who wants to view themselves in black and white? Nowadays, not only can you view digital pictures on the Palm, but with various third party software available, you can use the digital picture as a background, or display them as a slideshow, or show them while you have the Palm docked in the cradle, as well as sharing them to others by beaming them, or emailing them.

Resco Viewer is a third party photo and image viewing software that not only offers the capability to display digital photos, but also various other image file formats like Jpeg, progressive Jpeg, Gif, animated Gif, bmp, tif. So, you can easily transfer the image files over to the Palm and view it with Resco Viewer.
Aside from viewing image files, you can also manipulate the image files by altering the brightness, contrast, color, rotating, etc. So, if you have an image taken by the Palm camera or other camera, you can easily enhance it by manipulating various settings. And there’s also the Windows integration so that you can manipulate the photos in Windows.
Resco Viewer is also available for the Pocket PC/Windows Mobile platform. You can choose from Resco Photo Viewer Standard Edition or Resco Photo Viewer Professional Edition.

The simulation will play through to the end unless I’ve inserted a pop up note to explain specific points.
To continue playing the simulation, press the
button.
To go back to a previous paused segment, click on the
button.
To pause the simulation at any time, press the
button. To continue after it’s paused, press the button again.
To scroll forwards or backwards in the simulation, click anywhere on the left (to go back earlier in the simulation), or right (to go forward in the simulation) on
the progress bar.
This is part one of three simulations that will demonstrate the features of Resco Viewer, a photo and image viewer application for the Palm. The version in this simulation is an older version but I’m sure most of the features are very much the same. Please note that the Flash file is mainly over 1MB in size (due to the image and colors) so keep this in mind when you are viewing it as it may take a bit longer to load depending on your internet connection and the server it’s hosted on.

This is part two of three simulations continuing on showing the various settings in Resco Viewer.

This is part three of three simulations. I will show how to set the program to display the pictures as a slideshow.
Other third party image viewer applications
There are many other third party image viewer applications. Many of them offer similar features such as the standalone Palm viewing application while others offer added Windows integration.
Here’s a list of them:

I have only tried Acid Image and Resco Viewer. Acid Image at one time was crashing and then I couldn’t open it up anymore so I uninstalled it and tried Resco Viewer which has never crashed on me ever so I recommend Resco Viewer. You may feel differently. Try them out and go with whichever you prefer.
Again, I have only tried Acid Image and Resco Viewer. Please make sure you make a backup before trying any new programs just in case they cause a crash or reset loops so that you can restore it back to the way it was. I’m sure that many of them are older software that may not run properly on the newer devices. Please keep that in mind before installing programs that have not been updated in over a year.

I’ve only tried VFSi other than the included Palm Photos.
Somewhat unpolished interface, no thumbnail view, only list view, but it was nice to have for my z71 and now my T|T3. Palm Photos only does best fit to screen. Not good if you want to zoom in on your VGA pics you just captured so VFSi lets you zoom and and scroll around to view the details of your pics. If you transfer high resolution photos onto your SD card, you’ll also be able to zoom in on those as well, and it even supports hi-res landscape and portrait on my T|T3

You may want to try the list of freewares I’ve provided in the posting and see if they offer something more. I find Resco Viewer works great.
