I am first to admit that I don’t play games all that much. Maybe I’m too busy with other stuff to play with games or maybe I’m too old(?) and games don’t appeal to me as much. But regardless, I have found at least a few games that I truly enjoy playing (when I feel that I’d like to play games on the Palm). Of course, you guessed it. Bejeweled is one of my favorites.
Obviously, judging by my lack of a posting on games (this being my first one), maybe it’s about time I spend at least a posting on something that isn’t so serious. Utilities after utilities, and all those cut and dried stuff regarding the Palm can seem a bit too much after a while. So, I am trying to change the approach a little bit and focus a posting on a Palm game that I find is very addictive. Maybe I may start posting games a bit more often to mix things up a bit.
Again, if you are a software developer and wish me to check out your game or software, please contact me via the contact form. I can’t promise anything but will attempt to check out the software and if possible, try to create a Flash simulation of the game to give readers a better feel of how it works.
Bejeweled is quite an addictive game that seems quite simple and yet challenging at the same time.
The object of the game is quite simple. Clear the board of as many gems as possible before the time runs out or there are no remaining moves left. To clear the gems off the board you need to create a row of three or more matching gems horizontally or vertically. You are allowed to swap the position of two adjacent gems if doing so will create a row of three matching gems. Attempting to swap two gems that doesn’t create a row of 3 matching gems will only have the game swap them back. Attempting to swap two gems that aren’t next to one another also won’t work.
Depending on the row that is cleared, the gems will fall to fill in the void left by the gems previously cleared. So, if you clear a vertical row of 3 matching gems, the gems located directly above it will fill into the 3 empty spaces along with new gems at the top. If you clear a horizontal row, the gems directly above them will fall by one to fill in the one empty space. So, in many ways, it’s quite a strategic game (if you try to calculate possible next moves) as well as a simple game of tapping and clearing rows of 3 or more matching gems. So this game can appeal to a wide range of people. And it’s SO ADDICTIVE because it’s so simple. Once you’ve found that it’s too easy to simply match three gems, you’ll be challenging yourself to match four more more gems and trying to figure out how to maximize the points and gems you can clear off the board.

As you can see, the board is filled with 8 rows of 8 various color and shapes of jewels or gems. There are seven different shape and color of gems that are randomly placed on the board. They are: red and square, silver and round, yellow and square, blue and diamond, green and octagon, orange and hexagon and purple and triangle.

Simulation of Bejeweled

The simulation will play through to the end unless I’ve inserted a pop up note to explain specific points.
To continue playing the simulation, press the
button.
To go back to a previous paused segment, click on the
button.
To pause the simulation at any time, press the
button. To continue after it’s paused, press the button again.
To scroll forward or backward in the simulation, click anywhere on the left (to go back earlier in the simulation), or right (to go forward in the simulation) on
the progress bar.
This simulation shows the initial screens of Bejeweled the game, as well as a brief simulation of how to play the game by tapping two adjacent gems to swap them to create a row of 3 or more matching gems.
In this simulation, throughout the game, there will be “hints” provided by the program to indicate which gems will create a row of 3 matching gems. The hints are indicated by a brief flash or sparkle on the particular gem.

This simulation will show how during the course of the game that the gems will go through a brief rotation from the bottom left to the top right corner.

This simulation will show how it looks when playing in the timed mode of how the game will end. When the time remaining is getting dangerously low, the timer bar will change from green to red and start flashing. When the time is up, there will be a message that it’s “Times Up” and all the gems will crumble and fall off the board.

This simulation will show how the game will end when there are no remaining moves or swaps left. There will be a message that says “No More Moves” and the gems will start to shake and again, fall off the board.
As you can see in the simulations, Astraware’s Bejeweled is a very nice looking game. It’s simple to play and that’s where, once you unknowingly or unwitting start playing, you realize that’s very hard to stop. The sounds are nice and clear and they make playing the game fun, especially when you hear the sounds as the gems are getting cleared off the board. If you’ve never played this game before, make sure that you don’t start unless you have a lot of time on your hands, because, very addictive. If you ever need to take a break, simply exit out of the program by tapping on the Home or any other icon in the Silkscreen/Graffiti area or a hardware button and it will exit. The next time you launch the program, it will start where you last left off. Very nice.
