Quick note of thanks to Sammy McLoughlin of Palm Addicts for the brief mention of the Palm Discovery blog here.
I never thought I’d be spending time trying out clock applications when I already have and use Watchmaker, which I really like as a clock app. But, at the advice of Jaap Steilberg, the developer of Watchmaker, I decided to give Palmary Clock a try. Boy, was I amazed at how nice the clock application looked! The skins are amazing!
For this posting, I am reviewing the Palmary Clock for Palms and not the wireless edition for the Treo 600/650.
Simulation of Palmary Clock part one
The simulation will play through to the end unless I’ve inserted a pop up note to explain specific points.
To continue playing the simulation, press the
or
button.
To go back to a previous paused segment, click on the
or
button.
To pause the simulation at any time, press the
button. To continue after it’s paused, press the button again.
To scroll forward or backward in the simulation, click anywhere on the left (to go back earlier in the simulation), or right (to go forward in the simulation) on
the progress bar.
PLEASE NOTE THAT MANY FREE HOST SERVERS MAY HAVE POP UP ADS. PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU DISABLE POP UPS BEFORE CLICKING ON THE FLASH LINKS
In this first simulation, I will go through the main Clock and Calendar screen as well as looking into the Alarm and checking out the various options with regards to setting alarms including selecting the alarm tones, vibrate, launch applications, etc.
Simulation of Palmary Clock part two
In part two, we will continue on with the Timer, Stopwatch, World Time, World Map and Time Utilities which offer you a quick calculation of time in the four different cities you’ve set as well as showing internet time, sunrise/sunset.
Simulation of Palmary Clock part three
In part three, we will continue on to Moon Phases, which show some interesting facts on the moon as well as when lunar quarters occur. We will continue to go over the Options menu and view the General Preferences, Sound Preferences, Moon Phases Preferences
Wow. This clock application looks very nice. The skins make the screen look so vibrant. I love how the calendar and clock screen that I’ve shown in the simulation look. I’m sure that there are many more skins available that I haven’t looked at that are probably even better.
For a clock application, Palmary Clock really expands upon its capabilities beyond clock and alarm features. The moon phases, the map of the world and internet clock, timer, stopwatch are features that can be very nice and handy to have. And needless to say, the moon phase skin looks beautiful as well.
The only thing I don’t like about it (and it’s my personal opinion) is that I don’t like applications that take up more RAM than others. Unfortunately, since Palmary Clock relies on the beautiful graphics to present the wonderful skins, it is unavoidable that Palmary Clock takes up about 788k just for the application alone plus the size of the skin.
For a clock application, I feel that I can deal with a “lesser” program that will provide me with the basic alarm, and clock features that I mainly need. But again, this is just MY personal opinion. I’m sure that there are many other users who disagree with me. The application is very nice and works very well. Until I own a Palm device like the TX or others where RAM is not a factor to worry about, I will most likely continue to choose applications that are small in size and don’t take up much RAM. After saying that, many people will most likely still enjoy having such an application even if their device has limited RAM. It all depends on what application you like. We just have to adjust and balance between applications we want to use. That’s why all our Palms are different, based on how we customize our device and what applications we install and use.
For those who are aware of my “strange and unique” Treo problem where I can’t seem to be able to “dismiss” a third party alarm clock by tapping on the screen but instead have to press a keypad button at least 4 times to stop the alarm from ringing, Palmary Clock is no different. Alarms that Palmary Clock (the non-Treo version) bring up also exhibit the same unique behavior on my Treo. So far, the only third party alarm that works on my Treo is TreoAlarm. I guess I should try the Treo version of Palmary Clock to test whether it will work on my special case.
There are two Palmary Clock versions. One for the Treos, and another one for other Palm devices.
