Timing A Free Countdown Timer/Stopwatch App

I started using Timing version 1.5 shortly after I got my Palm, when it was still called Timing/Zeit (English/German language version). I loved its small size of 13k as well as being able to set and run 11 different timers with the app. It could work as a stopwatch (only up to the second), timer, countdown timer, count up timer. And I can easily pre-set each entry and customize the title of each counter so that I know what each counter did. So, for example, I can pre-set a countdown timer for pizza so that I know when to take it out of the oven, or for the teapot, or whatever. And what I usually use it for is to set a specific countdown timer for a specific task that I’ve assigned for my son (eg. piano practice). At times when we didn’t get to start the practice on time, and I wanted to make sure that he does the full 30 minutes, I can easily set up the timer to countdown for 30 minutes. And easily pause whenever there’s distractions around and resume it later. It works so well. And my son can’t dispute it.
With each new update, there’s obviously more subtle additions and enhancements and with version 2.0, it looks like there’s a lot more added. The new update version of 2.0 now allows up to 65,000 independent counters to be set. Wow! I doubt I’ll need 65,000 counters though.
Changes in the new version include the 65,000 counters capability, adjustable column widths of the counter or counter name, alarm sounds can be changed and customized on a note by note basis, volume of the alarm can be adjustable. This is a step up from only having a set collection of sounds for the alarm. Of course, it’s not the same as having your own mp3s as alarm sounds but at least, you can customize the sound so that it sounds something that you are comfortable with.
The timer or countdown values are shown on the left side of the screen. You can create a name for each counter by entering it on the right side. The name can span more than one line. Also, the coloumn widths are adjustable. Simply drag them to the width you desire. This can be handy and helpful if you have a long description or didn’t like the previous versions where you can only display a certain number o characters.
You can count up by tapping on the up triangle button, or count down by tapping on the down triangle button. The “S” button will bring up details of the Timer/Counter where you can adjust or set the alarm sound, the timer or counter, whether to count up or down and other settings. The “0” (zero) will reset the counter.
Version 2.0 supports all Palm devices with OS version 3.5 and later and at a size of 44k, it’s still quite small. For me, I still love small sized apps so I still use the older version.
Here’s a simulation of Timing to show how it works.

This version is still freeware for up to 11 timers. Once you need more than that, you are required to register the software. As I’ve already mentioned, I have been using Timing for a long time because of its small size. With version 2.0, it is now 44k but still relatively small in size with the added capabilities of customizable sounds, column adjustment and others. I still have the old version installed in my Treo and it works. Sure, it looks simple, but as I’ve always mentioned, I am pretty much a practical person and would normally prefer a smaller sized program than a larger one if the smaller works just as well. With 11 timers, I know that I have more than enough preset for most occasions, but the option for more is there if you need it.
If you haven’t tried Timing, I’d suggest you try it at least and see how easy it is to make it work and how little RAM space it takes up.
