If you’re like me, it always seems to be quite a scramble and frustrating when you’re pressed for time (usually at the end of a meeting or whatever) and you need to get someone’s phone number before they left.

Now, if they owned a Palm device, that could easily be done by having them “beam” their business card over to my Palm and then everything is there. But, unfortunately the rest of the world don’t own Palms and a lot of them are so anti-Palm or so biased against Palms so there’s no reason to continue discussing this.

So, we are usually stuck either asking them to provide us with a business card and when we get the chance, we’ll take the time to enter it in. Or, worse, (which normally applies in many cases), we have to enter it in the Palm. For people who aren’t proficient in Graffiti 2, entering the correct characters and numbers when you’re pressed for time is the most stressful situation.

You open up your address book, get to the correct field in the program. You ask them for their name and maybe have them spell it out if it’s not a familiar name. While they’re spelling it out, you fumble away at inputting the Graffiti characters, screwing up some characters in the process. Then you need to get to the next field and so on. What should have only taken seconds has taken minutes, with the other person somewhat frustrated at you with your silly digital device. Sound familiar?

Thankfully, there are various third party applications that can help you with this problem. And this one I’m discussing today is free, and very simple to use. Yay!

QuickPhone

QuickPhone is a simple to use program that allows you to input a phone number quickly so that you don’t have to struggle with entering numbers in Graffiti 2. To enter a number, simply tap on the virtual keypad, which is arranged in the same layout as a regular digital phone with the 7, 8, and 9 at the top row.

The nice thing about it is that you simply tap on the phone pad keys to enter the number and it’s there! No more trying to get the numbers correctly recognized. Simply tap. If you get it wrong, simply tap on the “Clear” button and you can tap again. What a great program!

Here’s a simulation of QuickPhone to explain how easy it is to use it

Simulation of QuickPhone part 1

In this simulation, I’ve shown the various menu options and setting in the program. You can set the format of the numbers to be in the North American phone number format of +1(xxx)xxx-xxxx or whichever European or other telephone format that you use. The nice thing is that once you’ve set the format, you don’t have to put in the () brackets or the dashes - as the program will automatically do it for you. How nice!

Simulation of QuickPhone part 2

In this second simulation, I’ve shown how you can make it even quicker to input a telephone number, simply by entering the number and not exiting out of it so that you can go back to it and enter the other info later. Of course, even if you exit out of the program, you can easily find the entry by the “last name” which normally defaults to “QuickPhone” in your Contacts or AddressBook. Then, simply edit it and add the necessary information.

The great thing about doing it this quick way is that you only take up a few seconds of someone’s time but still have the number down.I’m not sure if anyone has noticed that I’ve done the simulation on a Treo 650. Yes, QuickPhone, although it’s very much an older program and hasn’t been updated in quite a while, still works fine on a Treo 650.

Of course, it looks quite simple and doesn’t have great graphics and skins and isn’t even in color, but for me, I find that it works regardless of how it looks and I really like it a lot. And the tiny size of 21 k is really nice. Actually, I use it frequently when entering in phone numbers as it’s the fastest and easiest way to do so. I can even use my fingernails to tap on the keys since the buttons are fairly big.
