Essential App #24: No Alarms: Suppress Alarms From Ringing

Here’s a program that I feel should be an “essential” application to be included in my list of essential apps mainly because I have found it quite important to be able to have, regardless of the Palm device. Of course, you can always turn off sounds and alarms manually just before a meeting, but why do so when there is a program that you can use that will do it and turn them back on after your meeting, etc?
If you’ve ever find yourself in a meeting, conference, church, or other public places where it’s unacceptable to “accidentally” allow your alarms to ring and interrupt, well, here’s a great app you will find indispensable. You can easily set a specific time period to “disable the alarm” and avoid embarrassing situations.
NoAlarms is a free alarm silencing application that allows you to set a specific block of time or timeslot in which it will suppress any alarm from ringing and causing undue embarrassment. It’s a simple application that you launch, set a timeslot that you don’t want alarms to ring, confirm and it’s done. Did I mention that it’s small (10k in size) and it’s FREE?
It doesn’t matter what kind of alarm you’ve set and which clock or calendar or datebook application or notepad app it’s in, if it’s an alarm that’s set to ring, NoAlarms will suppress it during the timeslot you specify. So, rather than the normal way of checking through your Notepad app, Datebook app, Clock and alarm apps to disable or delete alarms, you simply launch NoAlarms, set the time and it will work. What I have personally found is that this program will likely ring the schedule alarms when the suppression block of time has past. For example, if you have set the block of time to end at 3pm, at 3:01pm, the program will at least wake up or turn on (on my Zire 71 in a previous version, the alarm rang). So, this program doesn’t completely disable the alarm although it may somewhat do the job. The main emphasis is that no alarms or sounds ring during the timeslot if you have it set up but the Palm may turn on at the end of the timeslot.
So, if you don’t want the program to drain the battery, it’s best to turn it off when you are finished with the meeting or whatever so that it doesn’t “wake up” the Palm when you aren’t expecting it.
The alarms will go back and ring for the previously set time tomorrow or at the next instance.
Simulation of NoAlarms
The simulation will play through to the end unless I’ve inserted a pop up note to explain specific points.
To continue playing the simulation, press the
or
button.
To go back to a previous paused segment, click on the
or
button.
To pause the simulation at any time, press the
button. To continue after it’s paused, press the button again.
To scroll forward or backward in the simulation, click anywhere on the left (to go back earlier in the simulation), or right (to go forward in the simulation) on
the progress bar.
View all scheduled alarms with NoAlarms and use as a diagnostic tool
Aside from suppressing alarms, this application is also great for diagnosing and displaying the alarms that are scheduled to ring on the Palm. So, if you find that your Palm is mysteriously turning on at a specific time each morning or ringing or waking up and you don’t know why, try NoAlarms and take a look at all the alarms that are set. If it’s scheduled to do something, most likely, NoAlarms may be able to give you some info.
I’ve used NoAlarms for quite a while now, first having it on my Zire 71 and now, it’s installed on my Treo and I’ve not experienced any problems with it whatsoever. I find it an indispensable app that all Palm users should have, especially since it’s so small in size and it’s FREE. Check it out!
