After reviewing and trying out various clock applications, it’s actually quite a difference almost like a breath of fresh air to find a simple clock application that is just a clock and not something much more.
SplashClock offers a simple clock application that shows the time against a background image. It supports JPEG images on an expansion flash memory card (Secure Digital) and/or Splashphoto.PDB images installed in RAM. You have a choice of displaying from amongst the various clocks: one digital, and five various analog faces. The size of the clock can be customized amongst three different sizes as well as the placement at the top, middle or bottom of the screen. The color of the clock can also be customized. You can control the opaqueness of the clock image and the date. As well, the program can randomly change the background image every few minutes as a slideshow so it could be quite a nice little distraction at your office desk.
Here’s a simulation of how SplashClock looks and feels.
Simulation of SplashClock
The simulation will play through to the end unless I’ve inserted a pop up note to explain specific points.
To continue playing the simulation, press the
button.
To go back to a previous paused segment, click on the
button.
To pause the simulation at any time, press the
button. To continue after it’s paused, press the button again.
To scroll forward or backward in the simulation, click anywhere on the left (to go back earlier in the simulation), or right (to go forward in the simulation) on
the progress bar.

As I’ve mentioned, SplashClock only offers a clock that shows the time. It does not offer alarm, stopwatch, or other extra features and capabilities that many other clock apps offer. With that in mind, at the size of 425k, it seems to take up much more RAM than I would have preferred, being someone who prefers a smaller app over a larger one whenever possible. I suspect that it may have a lot to do with the graphics involved for the clock’s background image as graphics does tend to take up a huge amount of space. I suppose that if the developer decided to separate the graphics images skin for the background from the program, that the size of the actual program could be dramatically decreased. Maybe other Palm users with similar opinions as myself may prefer this. But, then, in the end, if you want the graphics, the program will still take up almost the same amount of RAM, although, you could have the option of installing a smaller sized skin or background image.
Again, this is just my personal opinion. Please keep this in mind when reading my reviews.
As a simple clock application, this seems to be quite nice. There’s no clutter of other extras that many people may not want. But, on the other hand, for a clock application that doesn’t offer more than displaying a clock, 425k in my opinion seems a bit too much RAM to take up simply for displaying a clock. As well, at a price of $9.95, it may be a bit expensive for a simple clock app when there are others available for free. But if you want to be able to have your own image as a background for a clock, this may be worth it. So, it depends on what you want.
Personally, I think an improvement to the application would be to include a monthly calendar similar to what Palmary Clock offers. I think that having the time and a calendar with your favorite image (ie. your family, boyfriend/girlfriend) in the background could be what could convince someone to purchase this application. I know that a lot of times that I like being able to have quick access to the current month’s calendar. If it’s already there in the clock app, and it’s sitting at my desk, while it’s doing a slideshow of pics,I think it could be something worth considering. I don’t think that adding the calendar should add much bulk to the program and SplashClock could still retain it’s “simplistic” feel to it.
If you are interested in a nice looking and simple clock application, especially using it as a desktop clock that offers a nice looking slideshow of images (especially your own), then, give SplashClock a try.
