9/11. Five years later. Still seems like yesterday.

It’s impossible to post something today without taking a moment to reflect and recollect the event that changed our lives five years ago. I was at home in Hinton, Alberta at the time when I turned on the TV and had CNBC on. And at the time, they were discussing about the fire on the side of the World Trade Center and not sure what caused it. While they were discussing it, we could see a plane that was flying way too low and close to the World Trade Center. I remembered hearing the commentators talking about how unusual for this plane to fly so low and so close to the building and then, boom! I watched in horror as I saw the images of it crashing into the side of the building. That was the second plane that crashed into the Tower. From there on, I was glued to the TV for the rest of the day, wondering what was going on. Confusion, sadness, anger and all kinds of emotions were all coming and it was so unreal. I was in total disbelief that this kind of thing would happen. I was hoping like everyone that things would turn out okay, but again, I got a major shock when the North Tower collapsed. CNBC was interviewing someone on the phone and the woman screamed in horror. Later, we found out that the Tower was gone.

I’m sure that 9/11 for me changed my life as it did for everyone in this world. I hope this will never happen again. I am saddened by all the lives it has affected of those who were connected to victims of this horrible act of terrorism. I hope you will take a moment of your day to pause and reflect and honor those who perished and gave their lives while helping others. These are the true heroes of our time.

I have finally decided to try a commercially made screen protector after years of using the clingy plastic purchased at the fabric department of Wal-mart as a screen protector. I wasn’t necessarily displeased with the clingy plastic but was more curious about how good the NuShield screen protector was, especially when vieiwng in the sun. Normally, I find that with the clingy plastic that I do have a bit of problem viewing the screen in the sun. So, I was curious how different it would be with a commercially made screen protector.

I purchased the NuShield screen protector before I became an affiliate so obviously, I was impressed enough to try them out.

Disclosure: I am an affiliate of NuShield and the links to the of NuShield protector are affiliate links so any purchases made from these links will help benefit this blog in paying for hosting and domain fees. Thanks in advance!

I didn’t want to buy a screen protector that involved having adhesive backing, or spraying water on the screen or having any additional material or medium on or touching the screen since I believe that the best way to protect the screen is if there’s nothing but the protective material just covering it. This is especially because I know that a lot of people have difficulties with adhesive screen protectors that tend to affect the responsiveness or non-responsiveness of the screen once applied.

So, I decided to purchase a pack of three screen protectors ($11.99) from NuShield’s store on Sunday evening. Immediately after my purchase, I got an email confirmation from NuShield and shortly afterwards, an email thanking me for the purchase. On Tuesday, I got an additonal email indicating that the order was shipped. I received the shipment a week later.

The package consists of three screen protectors inside a zip closure bag. The back side of the packaging has a set of instructions on how to apply the protector and also includes a hard cardboard to prevent accidental bending of the package which may ruin the protector.

The screen protector itself feels very flexible yet rigid and almost like acetate, or the plastic sheet normally used for an overhead projector. There is a thin plastic backing on one side of the screen protector, which you must remove before inserting that side to face the Palm screen.

You’re advised to first clean both the screen protector and the glass screen of the Palm device with a slightly damp cloth. I could tell that my fingers were making marks on the screen protector so I washed my hands and cleaned the protector before proceeding.

To remove the plastic backing from the protector, it’s advised to stick a piece of tape on the corner of the protector and peel it off, which I did. Then, flip over the protector with the newly removed backing side to face the screen. Bend the protector slightly at the side edges where there’s a protrusion and slide one side under the Palm’s casing. You should feel that the protector is then pushed against a rubbery material. Push a bit more as it will “give” a bit and then either slide the protector down and up or vice versa to “fit” the protector underneath the casing all along the other sides. You may find that you will have to do a bit of sliding or bending to fit it in. Once it’s in correctly, you should notice that the screen looks like the protector disappeared, but obviously, it has snugly fit over the screen.

To remove the screen protector, you can easily put a piece of tape on the protector and pull and you should easily be able to remove it. The protector can be washed with soap and water and re-applied. With three protectors, I believe that it should last for my Palm device’s lifetime.

- No adhesive means no air bubbles or sticky residue on your screen.

- Super thin writing surface gives pleasant feel and excellent character recognition.

- Installs easily in seconds, can be removed, cleaned and reinstalled for continued use.

- Filters out 99% of UV light from reaching your screen or reflecting to your eyes.

Technology of the screen protector

- NuShield uses high technology to provide superior protection for your PDA.

- NuShield films are only 0.005″ thin and yet are stiff enough to stay flat on the screen without warping during use. A combination of careful material selection and proprietary film conversion makes NuShield the longest lasting product of its type. There simply is no comparison to any other screen protection product available.

- Backside of film is scratch resistant and has a patent pending, anti “Newton ring” treatment to prevent adhesion and distortion. Provides easy installation and uses no adhesive that can cause bubbles and possible damage when removed.

- Side “wings” hold film in place by slipping between the case and screen.

- Topside of film has a highly scratch resistant treatment with a smooth, pleasant writing surface.

Although for years, I’ve been using the clingy plastic as a screen protector for my Palm, I can now understand why others may want to spend a bit of money on a commercially made screen protector because there is a difference. I find that I can view the screen somewhat better in sunlight compared to what I had previously as well as the feel of the protector is so nice. The stylus glides so nicely and smoothly over the screen and it’s almost impossible to “see” that there’s a protector on the Palm. Of course, there’s no “bubbles” that can be a bit of distraction for many people, especially those who use the clingy plastic or other adhesive screen protectors. I am very pleased to have spent the money on these protectors as they are quite nice.

If you’re curious about getting a screen protector that won’t “stick” to the screen or affect it in any way, you may be interested in trying out NuShield’s non-adhesive screen protector.

Besides selling screen protectors for the PDA, they also offer screen protection for computer, laptop and tablet monitors, game systems, gps devices, cars, industrial touch screens such as those of point of sales terminals, etc. They also supply the same products to law enforcements, US Army and other industrial customers as stated in their case studies. Well, if it’s good enough for the US Army and law enforcements, I’m sure it’s good enough for me.

And, best of all, NuShield offers a no nonsense money-back guarantee, providing a full refund plus up to $5 in shipping costs. I’m not sure if any other vendors offer such a guarantee, but it sounds like they fully back their product and are confident of your satisfaction. They have been in business since 1998 and have been given many great reviews from various sites like Brighthand, PocketGoddess, TheGadgeteer and others, as listed here
