Amongst some of the free Audible files you can get periodically, there are a few subscriptions you can subscribe to at Audible. I’ve previously mentioned the Josephine Reed’s This is Audible in my original Audible posting. I personally quite enjoy this bi-weekly show as it offers a good variety of audio book selections and interviews of anyone ranging from authors to actors and others.

And here’s another free subscription that I’ve recently discovered and have subscribed to: Le Show with satirist Harry Shearer, carried on most NPR (National Public Radio) stations in the US.

He offers an *interesting* perspective on the week’s news with his satirical news commentary, comedic sketches with a bit of music mixed in. To try to describe the show would be nearly impossible as it’s quite difficult and probably easier if you took a listen.

Audible’s description of Le Show:

What the Critics Say

“Le Show is one of the best shows on modern radio.” (Entertainment Weekly)
“In the long nightmare that is America in the late 20th century, no one has given voice to the worst in all our natures better than Harry Shearer. His rants are funny, and his depth of knowledge on certain matters, from digital TV to Lewinskygate, is impressive.” (San Francisco Chronicle)
Publisher’s Summary

Le Show is a program of satire, humor, and commentary about the week’s news. Comedy sketches written and performed by multi-talented multimedia artist Harry Shearer, interwoven with an eclectic, ever-changing blend of music; from world to pop, soul to jazz. Shearer says about Le Show, “I do it because I don’t do standup, and I don’t do sitcoms, and the radio broadcast enables me to do what I think is funny in a broadcast medium without having to listen either to network executives or Canadian producers.”
About Harry Shearer: He co-wrote and starred in the seminal rock mockumentary, This Is Spinal Tap; he’s the voice of Mr. Burns, Smithers, Ned Flanders, Kent Brockman, and nearly a dozen other characters on the long-running FOX-TV hit, The Simpsons; and he was a cast member and writer on Saturday Night Live. Le Show, has been on the air since 1983.

Delivery: Weekly (Sundays)

I personally would have preferred his show to “get to the point” more often rather than prolonging some topics and themes and dragging the show out with his music insertions. Unfortunately, there’s no way I can skip parts of the program like I normally can with most Audible programs with its segments. Le Show is one entire program that doesn’t offer part skipping. So, I have to manually move the placement to minutes ahead if I want to skip the current part (ie. the music. If I wanted to listen to music, I’d be listening to the radio!). And another thing that is getting tiring on me is his frequent saying of “ladies and gentlemen”, sort of his way of making his point and highlight his idea. But aside from that, I listen to his show because it can be entertaining and enlightening. I do enjoy his regular “Apologies of the week” as he normally does a good take on this segment.

You may want to listen to a few of his past shows to get an idea of what it’s like before subscribing as it may not appeal to everyone.
