The latest issue of the free Audible periodical This is Audible with Josephine Reed on XM Satellite radio is now available for download. For more info on Audible and the bi-weekly radio show This is Audible, please check out my previous posting on Audible as well as older postings with the audible tag.
In this edition:
We begin with an October literary birthday. First, Elmore Leonard, who was born in 1925 and has written over 40 novels. He began his writing career in western pulp fiction, and somehow made a smooth transition to cool Hollywood crime fiction. We listen to a conversation between Elmore Leonard and audible.com senior publisher Beth Anderson, and a clip from Leonard’s latest book, The Hot Kid.
Then, baseball is in the air as Joshua Prager talks to Josephine about his new book, The Echoing Green: the Untold Story of the Bobby Thomson, Ralph Branca and The Shot Heard Round the World.
And, because baseball is so connected with storytelling, we listen to two great oral histories about America’s pastime. The first is called The Glory of their Times, written by Lawrence Ritter; it takes us back to the game and players of the first two decades of the 20th century.
The second is BUMS: an Oral History of the Brooklyn Dodgers; in BUMS, author Peter Golenbock brings a team and an era back to life by talking with sports writers, fans, executives, and, of course, baseball legends like Pee Wee Reese, Leo Durocher, and Roy Campanella.
And, finally, because we all need a smile, a listen to Steve Martin’s delightful second novel, The Pleasure of My Company.
