A BIG THANKS to Monica from Fortte for providing the Treo 650 Lateral Pouch PDA case for this review, without which, this review could not have been made possible.

Here’s quite an interesting idea and service. Rather than getting a case that looks exactly like someone else’s, and in the same black color that most others have, you now have the option of customizing and personalizing a case that is your own, something that truly expresses your taste and style, not to mention your name, initials or logo.

Before I go on about more details about Fortte on the special customized services it offers, I will focus first on the product review on the Fortte Treo 650 Lateral Pouch PDA case.

The Fortte Treo 650 Lateral Pouch PDA Case is a horizontal or lateral pouch type case that comes with (or without if you choose) a belt clip (choice of clip is available). It is made with premium full grain leather with magnetic snap closure for easy snap case closure and padded inner lining for the front and back for added shock and impact protection.

The case I’m reviewing is the stock case that comes in black with a fixed belt clip. The front of the case has a very nice looking silver Fortte shield logo with the embossed Fortte name on the flap. At the back, there’s a fixed belt clip. Unlike other fixed and non-spring belt clips, this clip seems quite rigid and strong so that even when putting it on my thin Tilley pants, they don’t slip out. That’s a plus for me.

With a case made of genuine leather, you know that it will last a long time and will protect the case very well. The leather, as with most new leather seems rigid, which is good because the case retains its shape very well. Over time, the leather will soften due to use and you will notice a slight difference but that’s just what leather is like.

As I’ve mentioned already, there is a special padded inner lining at the front and back of the case, to help provide an extra cushion or shock absorption and protect the case against drops (yikes!) or accidental bumps or hits (mostly unavoidable).

With the Treo placed on the side with the antenna up top and out, the design of the case allows easy access to the side buttons (volume and side button when the flap is open) as well as accessibility to the headset jack and even the stylus (if you have small fingers like me and can dig the stylus out). Or, you can also put the Treo in the opposite direction with the antenna down and out (but you’d need to put the antenna through first before putting the rest of the Treo in the case. To remove it, push up on the bottom cut out to slide the bottom of the Treo out and them remove. A bit trickier to do, but still manageable. I normally just prefer the easier way since I don’t have much preference over which side the Treo is facing but again, your preference may be different.

Here’s a brief list of features and description of the case (from Fortte’s website):

  • its PalmOne Treo 650
  • Available WITH different clip options to suit any lifestyle or WITHOUT any clip
  • Access to all side controls
  • Magnetic Snap Closure
  • Premium Full Grain Leather

This elegant and functional leather case is specially designed to custom fit your PalmOne Treo 650 Lateral Pouch Leather PDA Case to protect your handheld, smartphone or handheld game from the dents and the dings of every day life. Made of finest selection of high-altitude leather, this elegant case is produced by our own certified ISO 9001:2000, OHSAS 18001:1999, ISO 14001:2004 Facility.

Dimensions:

Height: 2.7 inches
Width: 4.6 inches
Depth: 1.3 inches

Overall, the case is a quality made case with a good strong belt clip (which I like a lot). The leather is somewhat rigid and stiff but that’s a good thing since it helps the case retain its shape, and as with most leather, they will soften over time. I really like the padded inner lining at the front and back of the case to help cushion and absorb shocks and protect the case. The leather seems thick enough to provide quite adequate protection against scrapes and cuts and I believe that this is a quality case that will last a long time. And I love being able to smell the leather. ;)

Now, more information about Fortte. Fortte provides a special customized service for mobile device cases which includes PDAs, smartphones, cellular phones, handheld game devices, and mp3 devices. They understand that a lot of us wish to have the ability to customize and personalize our cases, so that it truly represents and reflects who we are. They say that you can tell a lot about a person by what he wears, couldn’t the same be said about the style and color of cases and accessories as well?

Fortte offers a wide variety of leather cases ranging from flip cover types to lateral pouch types, and many others. Once you decide on a style or type, you can further customize it by choosing amongst all the various choices.

First, you have the choice of color. You can go through the list of color choices (and I’m sure that there’s one color that will appeal to you, and even if it doesn’t, you can always opt for the default and still very stylish black color. Here’s a list of colors available (Hover the mouse over the images for the color name):

Next, you can select from amongst the various choices for a belt clip (or none if you desire):

Then, you can further customize by having your own personalization (max 14 letters) embossed either at the front or back of the case:

If you have a special company or personal logo you wish to use, you can certainly have it on the case as well. This could be a great way for a company to promote the company brand to its VIP customers or reward special employees and certainly sets the case apart from everyone else. This is definitely a great way to show your appreciation to the recipient as well as provide some advertising or promotion for the company.

Wow! That’s a lot of customization! They remind me of the service that Day-Timer offers with their organizer cases (and I’ve bought a few of those back in my paper organizer days), or even something like Dell (I’m writing this using an old Inspiron 8100), where it’s built to order.

As with all customized products, it takes time for the case to be customized with all the special colors, features that you requested. Fortte states that they will ship all special cases within 2 - 3 weeks after the order has been placed. They will also wait 24 hours for special orders before processing the order, to allow the customer time to make any changes to the order as all special orders are non-returnable and non-refundable (for obvious reasons).

Turnaround time depends on the product order and availability. If the product is in stock, they will ship within 24 - 48 hours. Fortte offers various choices for shipment:

  • UPS Ground
  • 2nd day UPS
  • Overnight UPS

Those in Canada (like myself) will have their cases shipped via USPS from Fortte’s Miami Distribution Center and they normally take 3 - 5 business days. I LOVE companies that ship via USPS since I can avoid paying the hefty brokerage fee (more like a profit grab) that UPS and Fedex charges.

The cases are individual handcrafted from scratch and they go through a quality control process of testing to make sure that the cases are of the utmost quality.

Fortte’s manufacturing facilities is certified with high quality standards (ISO 9001, ISO 14,001, OHSAS 18,001).

But, if you prefer to order the stock case, you can also do so as well! So, you get the best of both worlds: a stylish looking leather case that you can customize (or not), depending on your preference. The option is there if you choose to do so. Best of all, the choice is yours. Please check out the choice of quality cases at Fortte
