A lot of Palm users may not be aware that they CAN assign specific ringtones or sounds to a specific Contact, even though the Phone application doesn’t seem to allow specific ringtone assignment. I will attempt to disclose a trick that you can use to allow you to set a specific ringtone to a particular contact. And you don’t need to purchase or install a third party program, so this may appeal to those on a tight budget.

The trick is quite simple. Create a Speed Dial Favorite in your Phone Favorites Pages and assign a specific ringtone to that particular favorite.

Here’s a description of how to do so:

1 - Open up your Phone application. You can do so by either tapping and launching the Phone Application in the default Palm launcher. Or, you can simply press on the green Phone hardware button located at the left, and directly above the Q key.

2 - Bring up the Menu either by tapping in the top left hand corner of the Phone application or pressing on the Menu hardware button located just above the Messaging (envelope icon) button.

3 - The Record menu should come up. Using the 5 way navigator or directional buttons, press the down button twice to highlight Edit Favorites Pages or simply tap on the Edit Favorites Pages.

4 - Tap on any empty box on the screen.

5 - Under Type, select Speed Dial from the drop down menu options. If you wish to assign a specific label, you can do so. Input the number. Make sure you enter it in the format that normally shows up when a Contact calls you. That normally is in this format: +12345678901 with the + and the 1 plus the ten digit number (for North America).

6 - If you want to assign a Quick Key (where it will dial that number if you press an hold a specific key), you can do so.

7 - Under Ringtone, select the ringtone you wish to assign for that specific Contact.

Done.

If that specific contact calls you, you should be able to hear the specific ringtone you’ve assigned.

And here’s a Flash simulation showing how to do it on the Treo.

The only problem with this trick is that you have to manually do this for every Contact you wish to have a specific ringtone. This can be quite tedious if you have a lot of Contacts but at least you don’t have to pay for a third party software. Keep in mind that you can only do this for midi files.

In the next How To Series, I will discuss a few popular third party ringtone management software that will make this a lot easier to do that will also support mp3s as ringtones.
