This is the last in How To Series on ringtones. If you haven’t read the first in this series, How to Transfer midi ringtones to your Treo, you may want to check it out. There’s also Find midi ringtones for your Treo, Cut and Edit your midi files so that they can be used on your Treo, and Assign specific ringtones without third party apps.
In this posting, I will be discussing some of the popular ringtone management software for your Palm or Treo. There are a lot of ringtone management or phone related programs for the Palm or Treo and while some will have limited ringtone management capabilities, others will offer a lot of features with respect to ringtone management.

Before I continue with the posting, the Treo phone does offer the ability to set two different ringtones for incoming calls. One ringtone for Unknown Caller Tone and another for Known Caller Tone (known Contacts in your Address Book). As discussed in the previous How To posting, you can set up each Contact as a Favorite in the Phone Application so that you can set a specific ringtone for each of them.
Phone applications with limited ringtone management
I will first discuss Phone applications that offer some albeit limited ringtone management. By that, I mean that they do not allow you to set a specific ringtone for each Contact. These are great multi-feature Phone applications that offer a lot of great features at a decent price but unfortunately doesn’t offer specific ringtone management for individual Contacts. Since I’m mentioning ringtone management and they don’t offer this capability, that is the only reason why I’ve grouped them this way. This is by no means indicative of their performance or features. As Phone programs with respect to features offered, they are excellent.

Phone Technician is a multi-featured Phone application for the Treos which also provides some ringtone management. You can use mp3, Wav, Ogg, Midi or polyphonic tones as your ringtone. You don’t need an mp3 player to play the mp3 files as ringtone, which is very nice. And there are other Phone features in this program such as volume boost, screen control, automated phone management, etc. But it doesn’t offer the capability to set specific ringtones for individual contacts.

TreoGuard is also another multi-featured Phone application that provides some ringtone management. You can use mp3, ogg vorbis, wav and wma files as ringtones. It also offers other Phone features like key locking, automated phone management, screen control, etc. Again, you don’t have the capability to set a specific ringtone for individual contacts.
These two applications only allow one universal ringtone solution to be used for all ringtones - no personalized ringers for different contacts.
Phone applications with multi-feature ringtone management
The following third party applications, will offer multiple contact ringtone management, allowing you to set a specific ringtone to each individual Contact. They also offer many other different Phone features that range from program to program. Again, please keep in mind that although most of them offer similar features, program preference is very much a personal choice. I’d strongly suggest trying each of them out for a few days (very important as sometimes we don’t notice things until we’ve used it for a few days) before trying the next one and making the decision on which to purchase.

Lightwav offers a variety of Phone features in the application from setting the ringtone for individual Contacts to setting for “Groups”, setting a specific picture as a caller ID, setting a song position for the ringtone playback so the it doesn’t necessarily start at the beginning, adding notes to a call upon its completion, ringtone boost, etc.

MP3Ringer is offered by the same developer as Lightwav but a much pared down version. It offers ringtone management, ringtone volume, area code display and allows you to set a specific mp3, ogg, wav, wma file as a ringtone for a specific Contact.

CallFilter is judging by the name, a call managment application, allowing you to set specific criteria or “rules” to filter your calls. You can “filter” calls by the number, category. You can also filter SMS messages. Like other Phone applications, you can set a picture as a caller ID. And, you can add a note after call completion.
With regards to ringtone management, you can set a specific ringtone (mp3, ogg, wav, midi) to a specific Contact.

Ringo PRO also offers the capability to set a specific ringtone for an individual Contact or Group. You can assign a picture to each Contact and use it as a Caller ID like some of the other Phone programs.
I have previously written a review with Flash simulation/demo to show the program in my Ringo makes managing ringtones easy posting.

mRing also allows you to set a specific ringtone to a specific individual Contact or a Group much like the other Phone applications I’ve discussed. The application supports the storage of the ringtone files on the SD card, rather than normally requiring to be installed in RAM. You can also set a random ringtone instead, offering something different that other applications don’t have. You can set profiles for automated phone management scheduling specific features during the day.
So, there’s quite a lot of Phone applications that offer ringtone management, specifically, allowing you to set a ringtone to each individual Contact or Group so that you can easily be able to tell who’s calling just by the ringtone before you answer the call. I’m sure that there are many other Phone applications out there that I have not mentioned. If you know of one, please drop me a line and I will add it to this post to make it better.
As you can see, each program offers something a bit different from the others. I’d suggest trying them out and see which offers the best features for your preferences and requirements. This concludes my brief series on ringtones and hopefully most of you have found the series helpful. Again, if you know of a program that I have not mentioned, please leave me a comment or drop me a line. That way, everyone benefits!
