Today’s Palm Explorer Profile comes from Jon Justice, winner of Tamoggemon’s Binary Clock for Palm Discovery’s 1st anniversary contest. Thanks again, to Tam Hanna for his generous donation for the contest!

Your name:
Jon. Justice
Your alias on Palm forums:
Kodabar
Your device(s):
Palm IIIc, Handspring Visor Deluxe, Palm Tungsten T2, Tapwave Zodiac 2, 12 x Palm V’s.
Your favo(u)rite Palm app(s):
Tube 2. The London Underground and London street maps get me around town without having to carry an A-Z. Brilliant!
What you like/dislike about the Palm:
What I love about Palms is just how configurable and hackable they are. When I got my Tungsten T2, it was nice. But it was much nicer when I got it playing MP3’s (with Pocket Tunes), replaced the system launcher (with Z-Launcher) , increased the heap memory (with UDMH), overclocked it and got rid of the screen whine (with Lightspeed) and stuck a 1 gig SD card in it so I never had to think about storage space again.
How the Palm has changed your life (or how it helps you) in any way:
I work as a film producer. I keep all my contacts, appointments, notes and documents on my Palm. It’s so easy to backup that I never have to fear losing my data.
However, the biggest boon has been acquiring twelve Palm V’s. Every time we’re in production on a film, I give out Palm to all my crew. They keep all their notes and docments on them and we beam them all back and forth through the infra-red port so that we can all keep up to date with each other. This saves a lot of time every day. everyone has all the information about the production at all times. Before a shot, the crew all check their Palms to make sure they know what shot it is, what scene it’s from, who should be on set, what equipment is being used, which actors are in the scene, how much time we have before the light goes and what we’re doing next. We’ve started shouting “Palms, Lights, Cameras, Action” now before every shot.
The other great benefit has come when talking to my wife. She’s Taiwanese and, although her English is very good, we sometimes get stuck over a word. Thanks to the Oxford English-Chinese dictionary, she can just write a character on the screen of her Palm and get an instant translation. It’s especially useful when it comes to technical terms that they don’t teach on her English course, or indeed my Mandarin one.
What do you mainly use your Palm for:
I mainly use it for getting around London and having something to listen to and something to read on even the most crowded of Tube trains.
etc (anything else you wish to disclose or share like tips, ideas, etc):
The biggest tip I can offer is to get UDMH. It turns all your system memory into heap (executable) memory and allows you to run so much more software on your Palm than you ever could before. I can now play Doom, Doom II and Heretic on my Tungsten T2 because of it.
Thanks very much for sharing this very detailed profile with us, Jon. Justice. I love it when I get profiles of people who are enthusiastic about the Palm device and have that “eyes wide open” attitude. And great to hear that it’s used in the film industry and that many others in various industries are embracing the power of a Palm device. I always love hearing about these stories. 12 Palm V’s is quite something though.
Do you have your own special story or can you submit your own Explorer Profile? Every submission of the Explorer Profile will be included into any future prizes or drawings that Palm Discovery will hold. I will likely be giving away some of the product samples I’ve received (they’re all in perfect condition since I don’t really use them and are really for doing the reviews) but will need to save up some money to pay for shipping them out. Thanks to everyone for your support!
