A BIG THANKS to Ka Wang Yee of JAVOEdge for providing the product for this review.
Here’s another vertical flip top leather case from JAVOEdge called the JAVOLeather Case. This one offers a slightly different feel and features compared to the other flip top cases I’ve previously reviewed.

First of all, the snap tab closure is now located at the top of the case, rather than the bottom. This is a nice design compared to a case that has the snap tab closure at the bottom. Having the tab at the top means that it’s actually easier to figure out and snap the case closed as you can see where the tab is meeting. This is a magnetic snap closure like most others, so that means it’s much easier to close it, by relying on the magnet to cling to the snap, even if you miss. The other nice design of having the snap tab at the top is that the flap will flip down, rather than up. This is quite nice, if you plan to use the Treo or PDA while it’s still clipped to your pants or belt as gravity will pull the flap down. With the other case, you’d have to keep your hand on the flap to keep it from falling down and getting in the way. But, that all depends on how you use it. If you prefer to try to swivel the PDA so that it’s upside down and work on it, then, having the flip top will get in the way since the flap is now up top. If you however prefer to remove the case from the belt clip and work it off that way, then, the flap will not get in the way.
The leather case, like most leather cases, smell very nice. I love the smell of leather and it’s very nice to be able to smell it. The smell isn’t overwhelming, but you do smell it. It’s made of soft leather so that there isn’t much “breaking in” so to speak with regards to this case compared to others that may offer a harder and rigid feeling leather. It all depends on your preference. Leather will soften over time so keep that in mind.
There is a plastic transparent cover over the hardware and QWERTY keys so that it provides some protection against any accidental pressings or damage to the keys while it’s in your pocket or purse. With a flip top case, the flap is already providing cushion and protection but this transparent plastic covering will protect it when the case flap is “open”. There are cut outs at the bottom and at the screen as well as ones at the side and back for the camera and buttons. This case will allow you access to most areas of the Treo while looking stylish and functional.
Here are my observations. Although having the magnetic snap tab closure at the top is a great idea, I seem to have a slight problem with it. First of all, I find that I need to give the tab a slight tug in order to allow it to wrap over the top of the case so that I can align it properly and have it “snap” into place. I’m sure that over time, with the leather softening that this will be eliminated.
Second, I find that the transparent part of the case where it fits over the QWERTY and hardware buttons isn’t aligned as well as I’d like. I could try to tug it up but then the bottom would be somewhat covered (as I’ve shown in the video). There’s only a slight bit of covering up, and considering that there is such a thin strip of leather that separates from the QWERTY keys and the screen, this could be quite difficult to manufacture so that it doesn’t cover the keys or the screen.
Third, I’ve found that the snap closure and the belt clip conflicts with each other. If I have the case snapped closed and then want to snap it onto the belt clip, I will likely snap the tab off when I put it in. They seem to be fighting for the same area or space and with the tab closed, it’s very difficult for the case to swivel, due to the tab getting in the way. As I’ve demonstrated in the video, it is nearly impossible to move the case when the snap tab is closed and it’s clipped to the belt clip. Hopefully in future version that JAVOEdge will address and fix these issues that I’ve observed.
Aside from what I’ve found, this is still a good case. I really like the top flap snap closure design and the transparent plastic cover over the QWERTY and hardware keys. Please check out the JAVOLeather Case at JAVOEdge.
