Thanks for visiting Palm Discovery

Just when I thought that I was going to have “light” postings through the holidays, it’s turning out to be the exact opposite with all the Otterbox contest submissions. Expect another Otterbox submission posted online soon.
I was quite surprised and “honored” to have been tagged by Matt Miller of Palm Solo and The Mobile Gadgeteer (yes, THAT guy who actually works in the industry) with this interesting “chain-letter” like idea. I’ve never been into chain letters way back in elementary school but since this seems quite harmless, I’ll participate and will become part of this viral idea. And considering all the other four “big” guys/gals that he tagged (Antoine Wright, Mobile Ministry Magazine owner and Brighthand contributor, Jenneth Orantia from Girls Gone Mobile, Jen Edwards from Pocket Goddess, Reggie Suplido from Micro PC Talk and 1src.com), I feel so way out of place.
Here are five things that you may not know about me:
1 - I was born in Hong Kong, China (at that time, HK was still part of the UK due to the 99 year lease) back in the 60s, ahem, let’s say it’s somewhat close to the late 60’s okay, and emigrated to Canada in the 70s. Although I speak the Cantonese dialect fluently, my knowledge of the language is limited because I stopped learning Chinese when I finished grade one. But, over the years, I’ve become better at reading and writing and even now try to learn Mandarin, or more specifically Potonghua (although it will be quite a long journey of learning but it’s fun).
2 - Although I’ve been living most of my life in Canada, mainly in the Greater Vancouver Area (Richmond, Vancouver, Surrey (yuck!)) , I did make a brief move to Hong Kong for a six month period to try out a life in Hong Kong. Needless to say, I didn’t like it. Hong Kong was too humid, too hot, dirty and the locals aren’t very friendly to those who aren’t locals and it was quite evident when I went back to work there. It’s such a sad reality when you can’t expect anyone from Hong Kong to be a genuine friend without wondering whether he or she is backstabbing you while helping you up. Sad but true. Hong Kong is great to visit but I certainly won’t ever live there on a permanent basis.
3 - I was previously working in the financial and investing business. Although I love business and investing and the industry as a whole (I’m still glued to the business news daily), the work was extremely stressful. Talk about taking the work home with you. I got quite aggravated and stressed even when at home and became very tense and uptight to people at home because it was affecting me so much. I started jogging and exercising to relieve the stress but it wasn’t until I left the industry that I felt I’ve got a hold back on myself. It seemed quite a loss to give up the trading license but then, sometimes you have to think about yourself rather than the money.
4 - I still get asked for ID every time I go to the liquor store. Yes, even now. At one point, I was getting annoyed about it but nowadays, I just show it to the cashier before they even ask. And they still ask. Do I look that young? I guess so, or these guys aren’t very good at determing that I look more than 25. The funniest thing was that I was asked for ID at a lottery ticket counter once as well, and the age requirement for that was 18! Huh? And the girl that asked me, looked like she was younger than 18. Thankfully, I don’t get asked at the lottery ticket counters anymore.
5 - I have a set of peach faced lovebirds. Yes. I didn’t write about this in my About page but I do have three lovebirds. Many people who have watched my video reviews may have already figured that out because you could make out the occasional bird squeeks and chirps in the background. I can’t keep them quiet! I used to have 5 at one point, but they died. Got a baby bird but then the father passed away as well. So, I actually did have 6 birds, although not at any one time.
To spread this viral idea around, here are the next five people I will be tagging:
1 - Murray Alexander of Palm Mac and Associate Writer of Palm Addicts
2 - Alison Barclay of AlysBlog and Astraware
3 - Steve Trotto of Steve Trotto.com and Mobility Today
4 - Chris M of Tungsten|E Guy’s blog and Associate Writer of Canuck PDA
5 - Duke Carico of thedukeblog and moderator of everythingtreo.com

I readily accept the challenge! Give me a day or two however . .
Tis nice to read what you had to write about May. I enjoyed my questions as well, but somehow have to get a tabbed browser on my Treo so that I don’t forget what exactly it is that I have to answer :-\
Tis a very cool thing nonetheless. I wonder what others will write.
I’m a bit lost here, not for the first time, do we publish these on our own sites?
Macy,
Thanks for thinking of me. I will definately tag 5 more people.
Happy New Year!
Steve
Hello, everyone! Thanks for accepting the tag and I’m looking forward to reading them all (I have most of them already). This is quite an interesting idea and I think it’s quite nice (as long as you don’t get tagged too many times
).
Yes, Murray, you do post your own list of 5 things on your own blog and tag another 5 people for this viral tagging to work.
As I’ve mentioned before, this is a great community and I’m certainly making more new friends, discovering and learning more about everyone through interactions, blogging and replying to comments all over. It certainly makes it even better!
Thanks for taking the time to write your own post and for replying back!
