Do you have a backup plan? Great. How about a loss recovery backup plan? No? Why not? What precautions have you made to protect you for the loss of that valuable Palm, PDA or Treo or other portable mobile device, not to mention your luggage or other valuables? What happens if you ever potential lose those valuables? Do you have protection? Do you have insurance? Do you have a loss recovery service for those valuables?

We spend the few hundred dollars on the investment of a Palm or PDA device. We may spend the extra money on the external protection like a case, screen protectors, but a lot of us forget about something else that is very important: loss protection.

If we ever accidentally lose something anywhere in a public or even private place, what are the monetary costs of replacing it? Let’s only focus on the monetary cost of physically replacing such a device. For one, it would likely be the current price or cost of purchasing a similar device, which will set you back another few hundred dollars. As well, you will also have to spend some time to restore data, programs, etc back into the device to get yourself back on track. What about the value of the data lost? Depending on the value of the data, especially corporate secrets, numbers, etc, this obviously is very valuable. How much money does it cost to recover that back? Time means money. What price could you put on peace of mind considering what I’ve just outlined in terms of the replacement cost of your Palm or PDA?

Well, the idea of a loss protection and recovery sticker service program is nothing new. There are many different brands and services out there. You can check out an older posting where I’ve written a bit on this topic. I will be concentrating on one of them in this review.

Stuffbak is a loss protection and recovery sticker service program where you can purchase from amongst a variety of choices for this service. First of all, you can choose from amongst a variety of packages of stickers ranging from various shapes, sizes and type ranging from adhesive, teslin and a highly durable aluminum adhesive stickers to keytags.

Simply go online to Stuffbak’s website and register the unique identification number located on the sticker or tag. Once registered, your device is entered in Stuffbak’s database. Should you accidentally lose or misplace your device you can be assured that it will be returned to you once the finder contacts Stuffbak via their toll free number or via www.stuffbak.com. Stuffbak labels come with lifetime registration and 2 years free returns! I think that’s a great deal! As long as you have the sticker on the device, if it’s lost and returned, you will get it back. Sure, you will pay for Stuffbak’s recovery service and costs to ship it back to you, but I would think that it’s well worth the cost and peace of mind. Considering the alternative, I think the cost for its return is minimal.

If you check out Stuffbak’s website, you can view a list of recent returns so you can be assured that they do work. Actually, some of them are quite interesting to read, especially the one that was “floating in the ocean in Hawaii”. Most people who find lost articles will return them, especially if they know that they will be rewarded. Of course, there will be some who won’t, but with an official loss protection and recovery program, you do have better odds of getting it back compared to simply writing down your name and number. And don’t forget the anonymity that comes with such a service. You never have to have any direct contact with the finder and you also have the added benefit of being able to provide your own extra reward should you wish to do so without giving up your name and address. You can choose from offering a Blanket Cash Reward or Per Item Custom Reward and you confirm the reward before it’s revealed to the finder. According to Stuffbak’s website, they claim a proven 75% recovery rate, which is quite high.

  • StuffBak’s service safeguards owner identity. Personal and/or business information is kept safe and private. Anonymity can be maintained throughout the return process. Owners don’t need to meet with strangers or reveal contact information.

Designed for today’s mobile world

  • We’ve yet to encounter a mobile device we couldn’t protect! StuffBak labels fit neatly on almost anything that’s valuable to you and vulnerable to getting lost.

High Tech Materials

  • StuffBak labels are made from industrial-quality materials that are designed to stand up to the rigors of every day use. Subsurface printing provides excellent durability and clarity with outstanding resistance to damage from abrasion, weather, chemicals or heat. Adhesives withstand 5.0 lb. per inch. Strong stuff!
  • StuffBak labels and tags are available in brushed chrome polyester, a tough anodized aluminum with adhesive backing, or a lightweight teslin (plastic) material. The materials provide a just-right balance of functionality, style and durability.

A wide variety of shapes and sizes

  • StuffBak label options are constantly evolving to keep pace with our shrinking mobile world. Our unique selection includes labels small enough to protect pencil-thin iPODs, eyewear and even Bluetooth earpieces. Likewise, midsize and large labels are available to stand out appropriately on bicycles, laptops and sports gear. StuffBak’s unique theft deterrent warning label can be added to any valuable item (mobile or not!) to warn off the bad guys as well.

Encourages a finder response

  • The “Reward for Return” message is easily understood and encourages finders to take action. Airport lost and found departments, TSA (airport security) personnel and police departments are familiar with StuffBak’s service, and are always relieved to see the StuffBak link on recovered items. Good Samaritans comment regularly on how sensible the service is, and how easy it was for them to ‘do the right thing.’

Stylish Protection

  • StuffBak’s labels and tags utilize a simple, yet elegant design. Labels can affix to the side, front or back of the device, depending on your personal preference. Just make sure the label is visible (e.g., not hidden behind a battery pack) so a finder will see it quickly.

Guaranteed!
Our labels are guaranteed for the life of your product. If for any reason, you are not satisfied, you’ll get your money back!
No questions, no kidding!

Stuffbak also offers a premium service coverage. For $19.95, it eliminates the recovery fee for ALL registered labels, provides instant email notification for found items, priority service and handling, free overnight shipping (excluding international recoveries) for recovered items and 20% Stuffbak store shoppping discount (including specials!). This is a one time fee that covers all your registered items.

You can choose from amongst the various packages offered at the Stuffbak store ranging from a couple stickers with the lifetime registration and two years free returns to a family packages offering a wider variety of stickers and tags. They also offer special corporate asset coverage protection with volume discounts and automatic registration.

For the peace of mind that Stuffbak offers, I think it’s well worth the investment. I especially like the lifetime registration that they offer. This provides me the recovery service for the life of my device without spending any extra fees until I need to pay for its return. When you are considering that they will return your device back to you, and you only pay when you’ve lost it, I think it’s still a great deal. And with a no questions, no kidding guarantee, you can’t really go wrong. This is one great idea that benefits everyone: Stuffbak, you and the finder of your device. Enough said.

Again, all Palm Discovery readers can get an additional 10% off your purchase at Stuffbak with coupon code discovery. As always, thanks for all your support!
