Thanks for visiting Palm Discovery
PalmDiscovery

First of all, Palm Discovery gives a BIG THANKS to Tam Hanna of Tamoggemon for providing the product for this review.

If you have a pretty good capacity sized SD (Secure Digital)/flash memory/expansion card like 1, 2 or even 4GB and store a lot of media files like pictures, videos, ringtones, mp3s, etc, chances are, you will know how difficult it can be to organize these files so that you can find and access them later.

Most of us will likely just download or store them in a specific folder and then forget, until we encounter the need to locate it. Of course, by then, we have probably accumulated way too many files that it is very time consuming to manually look in each folder on the card for that file. Or worse yet, if it’s a document and you can’t remember the name it’s saved under.

Tamoggemon’s FileFind program will help solve that problem. You can easily set many different filtering and criteria to specify and narrow the search (or vice versa to broaden it) so that the program will do the searching for you. You can specify where to do the search (eg. within a specific folder on the card), search for the extension of the file (eg. avi, mp3, jpg, etc), partial name search, text based content search, as well as file attributes like size of the file, whether it’s a read only file, etc. There’s a lot of different ways you can filter and narrow the search so that you only come up with specific results.

This can be very handy for those who have a lot of files and don’t want to have to go into all the various folders, subfolders looking for something without really knowing exactly what you are looking for. With FileFind, it can help with at least providing some results so that it may trigger your memory.

Here are my observations of the FileFind program.

The current version 2.1 seems to search the files much faster than 1.0. which is very nice. The download package (in zip) includes a manual in pdf format, which is handy for those who may need to refer to it to understand how to use it. The program isn’t hard to figure out if you are willing to look around but it’s nice to have the manual to explain some things that may not be obvious to some users.

Searching for specific extensions (ie. file formats like .mpg, jpg, etc) are usually quite quick, especially if you specify it within a folder. But, when you start searching for text (ie. words), the search time can take a while, which can range from a minute to several minutes, depending on whether you have specified the search within a folder or if it’s for the entire card. While FileFind is doing the search, there is no way that you can terminate the search process. Pressing any hardware keys like the Home button, tapping on the screen, or other ways won’t exit out of the search. You have to wait until the search is done before you can access the Treo. The only way to terminate the search is to do a soft reset (as far as I know). Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Personally, I would like to have the option of being able to stop the search mid way similar to the Palm search so that I can still be provided with a list of current results, even if the search wasn’t completed. Again, if the search is taking a long time (especially if it’s taking more than a few minutes), you can get a bit impatient and will want to stop it so that you can get access to your Palm again. Also, while the search is in progress, all alarms will be disabled. I have not tested whether the Treo phone will ring while the search is in progress but I would assume that it won’t or that even if it did that I can’t answer the phone. Again, I have not tried it so I am not sure. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Another suggestion for the FileFind program is the possible integration of it with a file manager program, like the popular freeware FileZ, or Resco Explorer, or others, so that with the results we can then go into the file manager program and look up more details on it.

And yet another somewhat related suggestion is the ability to copy the result and be able to export it to a text based program like Memos/MemoPad. Especially if we get a huge list of results, it would be very helpful to be able to have that list so that we can refer back to it for reference later, rather than having to do the search again, wait for the list and then note it down to find a result in the list.

Aside from those observations and suggestions, I think FileFind can be a handy program to have, although I personally don’t do much searching for files on my Treo. If you have a lot of files and are looking for a file search utility for the expansion card, give FileFind a try! I certainly hope that a future update can reflect some of my suggestions to make it even better.

FileFind costs $7.49 and comes with a 30 day money back guarantee. You can try it out for a 14 day trial, afterwards, you will need to get it registered to continue using it. All upgrades are free for registered users! That means with your software purchase, you will upgrade to a newer version without any cost. You can purchase it from PalmFileFind.com
