Welcome back. This is Part 6 of a 10 part series on Choosing a PDA. Here’s a list of the top 10 things you should consider when choosing a PDA:
1 - Standalone PDA or all-in-one smartphone?
2 - Wireless connectivity?
3 - Touchscreen or non-touchscreen PDA?
4 - Graffiti or on-screen input or keyboard/keypad input?
5 - Palm, Pocket PC, Blackberry or other similar devices?
6 - Screen resolution
7 - Memory (RAM)
8 - Battery (life and removable or non-removable characteristics)
9 - Processing power (clock speed)
10 - Expandability and accessories
6 - Screen resolution
We are now getting into the more technical aspects of the PDA. Screen resolution is something you should definitely consider when choosing a PDA. What is screen resolution?
Quite simply, it is the number of pixels, or dots that are on the viewing area of the PDA screen, which make up the image that we see. For example, if we have a regular square screen of 2 inch by 2 inch and the screen resolution, for the sake of simplicity, is 10 dots by 10 dots. If these 10 dots horizontally and 10 dots vertically are expected to fill the 2 inch by 2 inch screen, you will notice that the dots will be quite huge square chunks. So, an image of a picture will not look terribly nice since there is hardly any way to provide all the shades of colors on those 100 dots. Now, comparatively, suppose we double the number of dots from 10 to 20 on the same 2 inch by 2 inch screen, wouldn’t you think that the resulting image should look better and sharper? That’s the idea behind screen resolution. The more dots or pixels on the screen, the better and sharper the resulting image will look. This similar idea applies to computer screen resolution as well.
So, you should now understand why screen resolution is very important when choosing a PDA. Obviously a 160×160 (low res) resolution screen, found on a Z22 device will not show the same picture as nicely as a 320×320 (hi res) resolution screen found on a Treo 650. With some Pocket PCs, they can get as high as 640×480 VGA.
Obviously, the higher the resolution, the sharper the image will look on the screen and if you can afford a higher resolution PDA device, and the other features offered are okay with you, by all means, get that PDA device. But, as with most things in life, you normally will have to compromise and balance things out to find the best value for you, offering what you want at the price you want with the features you want. But don’t just focus on the screen resolution solely but balance out its other features as well.
That’s the end of this part on screen resolution. Please continue on to Part 7: memory (RAM)
