Rumors of Telus going to GSM has been around for a while. Although it seems like a great April Fools joke, with the recent news swirling around, it does look like it’s very possible. Apparently, Telus’ job listing for a Senior Switch Engineer also lists “knowledge on UMTS, IMS, and LTE evolution” in the job description requirements. Hmm.
If Telus were to go to GSM, it wouldn’t be surprising. After all, Telus did overspend on its acquisition of Clearnet to get at the BC market. Then, they did try to take over Fido until Rogers came in and stole it from them. And they are finding that their wireless growth is slowing down. This certainly isn’t good news for Rogers Wireless, the main national GSM carrier in Canada but definitely good news for GSM subscribers like me.
Telus, On The Move To GSM?
Not that it was confirmed or has been formalized. There are, hotugh, hints here and there that it’ll happen.
Telus is not exactly decommissioning their CDMA network or anthing like that. They do like the UMTS/HSPA though. The reason being? They are listing a bunch of jobs. Of course, all of the jobs (for switch engineer) to have some CDMA and EV-DO experience. That makes sense, but they also put down “knowledge on UMTS, IMS and LTE evolution as well
