After all the rumors, and for so long especially with the legal wrangling of the iPhone name in Canada not to mention Rogers Wireless reluctance to lower their outrageous data rates, it is now official. The iPhone will finally be available in Canada, years after it’s been available everywhere else in the world and that the newer rumored 3G iPhone is coming. My question is whether we’ll be getting the old iPhone or the newer one that is coming in June? It would be so sad if Canadians are behind the curve and have the older iPhone and everyone else has the newer model. Well, they did say it’s coming later in the year so hopefully we won’t be “that” behind on the curve. I don’t know about you, this news almost seems like it’s a tad late. And judging by the reaction in the stock market, it seems quite ho-hum. I’m sure a lot of people are excited by this news though.

A Globeandmail article reported that “Rogers Communications Inc. [RCI.B-T] said on Tuesday that it has reached an agreement to bring Apple’s [AAPL-Q]iPhone to Canada, a move that promises to bring more growth to its cellphone business after the unit posted a 16 per cent revenue gain in the first quarter.”

““We’re thrilled to announce that we have a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Canada later this year,” Rogers chief executive officer Ted Rogers said on Tuesday in a statement. “We can’t tell you any more about it right now, but stay tuned.””

So, it’s now official and Rogers is finally bringing the iPhone to Canada. I’m wondering how much lower will their data plans be? Considering what Rogers has been doing with regards to their data rates, I’m sure that unlocked iPhones and other smartphones will be shut out from the lower rates. We’ll see.

Read on for the rest of that article.
