USB Fever's armband and sport case for iPhone 2G

Palm Discovery would like to extend a BIG THANKS to Thomas of USB Fever for providing the product for this review.

USB Fever's armband and sport case for iPhone 2GUSB FeverBeing that we are owners or users of PDA and smartphones, it seems natural that we would want to have it with us almost everywhere we are. Sure, we have cases that clip to our belt when we are out, but what about when we’re at home? How likely are we going to put our PDAs or smartphones in that belt clip case and have it with us while at home? I am one of those few people who want it with me everywhere, okay, except in the shower but even then, I have it playing Audible or podcasts. Anyway, I have a tendency to want to be able to listen to my podcasts while I’m working, like washing the dishes, or mopping the floor or whatever. Although it’s possible to wear the belt clip cases and plug in my headphones, I prefer to be able to listen without them, instead opting to have the podcast playing through the internal speakers. So, while washing the dishes, even when the volume is cranked up to the max, I may not hear it very clearly. So, my problem is finding a way to carry my smartphone (ie. Treo 750) with me in such a way that I can still work away without dealing with dangling headphone wires and also be able to hear my podcasts or music clearly. Well, I’ve found a solution: USB Fever’s armband and sport case for Apple iPhone 2G.

Please note that this case is designed for the older Apple iPhone 2G. There is a similar styled armband sport case for the Apple iPhone 3G here.

Okay, before anyone speaks, yes, I’m quite well aware that it’s for iPhone 2G and not for my Treo 750, but surprisingly, it still works, or at least, it holds my Treo 750 well enough that it won’t fall out. And that’s all I’m looking for in such an armband case.

The armband and sport case for iPhone 2G is quite simply, a case that will hold your iPhone 2G smarphone device that will wrap around your arm in an armband fashion. The case is composed of a holster like design with a transparent plastic window to enable easy viewing of the iPhone while inside the case. At the top of the holster is a snap closure to ensure that the iPhone remains safely inside without sliding out. The rest of the case is made of stretchable synthetic material that feels soft and comfortable to wear. The stretchable attribute of the material makes it easier to adjust and hold the case on your arm to prevent sliding. To adjust the armband strap to suit your preference and arm, you can pull and tug and secure it in place via velcro. There is a stretchable headphone cord wrap/loop at the side of the armband which can also be use to hold a pen or other similar items that you can loop around. Talk about convenient! Now, you can have your iPhone with you everywhere, even when jogging, biking, playing tennis, etc.

As mentioned already, this is an armband sport case that will hold your iPhone 2G securely wrapped around your arm, allowing you total freedom to participate in an active lifestyle without giving up the accessiblity of your iPhone. The armband secures the iPhone via a snap closure at the top of the holster like case and around the arm via strong velcro along its arm strap. There is a headphone cord wrap/loop at the side of the case to hold a pen or headphone wires. The armband over all is very lightweight with soft, synthetic, stretchable material that makes wearing it very comfortable.

I Liked:
  • lightweight and easy to use
  • unobstructed access to side and volume buttons, headphone jack, power button
  • snap closure at top secures iPhone from falling off

I Didn’t Like:

  • lack of speaker holes to allow sound through
  • can’t access screen directly with transparent plastic window
  • can’t access SIM card tray when secured with snap closure

Here are my observations:

This is a very useful and handy armband sport case for the iPhone 2G which, also fits my Treo 750 (somewhat as the 750 is much thicker than iPhone so can’t secure via snap closure). Having such an adjustable armband case now enables me to wear my Treo 750 everywhere and be free to do a lot of tasks or activities without obstruction. Its adjustable velcro strap with stretchable material enables that I can adjust the case to ensure a comfortable fit that will still keep it wrapped around my arm.

My only gripes about the case is that although it has a transparent plastic window to enable viewing of the iPhone, while the iPhone is in the holster case, you can’t access the screen (keep in mind you will want to do finger touch swiping on the iPhone to access a lot of features). Had there not been the transparent plastic window, it may have made the iPhone much more accessible. Also, I would have also preferred some speaker holes so that I can listen to the internal speaker. The snap closure, although understandably there to secure the iPhone in the holster case, does prevent access to the SIM card tray. But then, it’s hardly likely you’ll want to access the SIM tray while on the go, like biking. I am only pointing out these points just as possible items to note.

A possible suggestion for improvement is adding an extra pocket or pouch on the other side of the holster case, or even along the interior side of the armband (where it touches the arm) for possible cards or coins.

Aside from these observations, I am very pleased with this armband sport case as it offers me the ability to enjoy my audio while I’m doing other tasks.
