Speck Products SkinTight with Holster for Treo 700w/wx/p
Speck ProductsOne of the common complaints with a lot of the Treo smartphones is the slippery casing. Although it may look nice to have a sleek looking casing, it isn’t very functional as the casing is a bit slippery and on a few occasions, I have felt my Treo 650, and trial units of 700p, 700wx slip out of my hand. Considering how careful I am of my devices, you can understand my concerns about slippery casings. So, it’s obviously important to find a solution to this problem. Speck Products SkinTight Skin case for the Treo 700 series of smartphones (700p, 700w/wx) is an inexpensive solution that not only provides a much better grip of the Treo smartphone but offers protection against slight scratches and bumps. As well, the color of the skin case may also enhance the beauty of your Treo smartphone.

The SkinTight is similar to other skin cases that is made of flexible synthetic material and fit over the Treo smartphone, covering it all around with cutouts for access to essential features of the smartphone. At the front, there is a transparent plastic window covering to protect the screen. You can flip it up for easy access to the screen when needed and flip it back over when done. The hardware buttons is covered but to aid in the navigation, the case is made with special buttons that cover and overlap over the hardware buttons. Also, there is a special little bump or point on the buttons, to help you feel your way around the buttons and be able to press them even when you are are not looking at the Treo.

The QWERTY keys are uncovered, allowing full access to the entire keyboard. The side and volume buttons are similar designed like the hardware buttons with special overlay buttons to help you “find” them. At the back, there are cutouts for the camera and mirror and the internal speaker. At the top, there’s access to the ringer switch and stylus. At the bottom, the cutout allows full access to the connectors and audio jacks.

Similar to Speck Products SkinTight skin case for the Treo 680, 750, and 755p, the skin case is very easy and simple to clean. Simply fit the Treo inside the case through the bottom cut out and push it through until the antenna sticks out and adjust until the entire skin case is aligned and fitted over the Treo. To remove, pull at the bottom of the skin case so that you can remove the Treo through the bottom cut out (reverse of inserting the Treo). Similar to other skin cases, cleaning is easy. Simply wipe it with a damp cloth or wash it in soapy water.

Although the SkinTight case for both the 700 series and the 680/750/755p series are somewhat similar in looks, there are some differences. First, the 680/750/755p case is made of silicon. The 700 series SkinTight case is made of a polymer called Kraton. The material is much more sturdy, rigid and less soft or smooth. You definitely can feel the difference. The material may be somewhat stiffer, but it is still very flexible. The second difference between the two SkinTight cases is that the 700 series also has a transparent plastic window covering to protect the screen. The newer SkinTight cases do not have that. Depending on your preferences, this may be a good thing or it may be a hindrance.

* Height: 4.4 inches
* Weight: 2.2 oz.

Q&A:

* How does the holster work?
The holster was designed to hold the phone facing “out” - althought it will also securely hold the phone facing “in”. We recommend your phone facing “out” so you can simply unclip the holster with phone from your belt to answer your calls.

* What are SkinTight cases made of?
They are made of Kraton- a special polymer (plastic). It’s silicone free, durable, tear resistant and will last a long time.

* Does the case interfere with my ability to hear, speak clearly or use any buttons or features?
The SkinTight case allows for full functionality and does not interfere with speaking or hearing conversations. The SkinTight is the latest in smartphone protection- with cutouts for speaker, mic, plugs, camera, and all control buttons. The SD card slot is covered by the skin. The IR port is also covered.

* Will it fit on my phone?
SkinTight for Treo 700w/p will fit only on Treo 700w/p phones. We do have other cases available for Treo 650, and our leather Executive and Lady cases will fit on Treo 600, 650, and 700w.

I Liked:
  • tiny, circular bumps on keys aid in navigation
  • protective plastic window protects screen
  • 360 degree belt clip rotation with 24 different locking positions
  • holster belt clip included in package at no extra cost

I Didn’t Like:

  • Kraton material not as soft or smooth as silicon
  • not as many cutouts as I’d prefer
  • attracts dust and particles
  • require to carry entire holster to carry smartphone on belt

Here are my observations:

First of all, I am very impressed by the extra care of Speck Products in designing the case, especially with regards to adding the extra bumpy circular points on the hardware keys and side keys. It can definitely make a huge difference when you are occupied with other tasks that you can easily be able to do specific tasks on the Treo without having to look at it.

Second, the transparent plastic window covering is very nice as you can not only protect the screen from accidental scratches but still remain easily accessible when needed simply by flipping the lid open. For those who may find it an obstruction, it can easily be removed simply by unhooking it from the hinges as you flex the case.

Third, the case although it is a skin case and still very flexible, is not as smooth or as soft as other skin cases made of silicon. You can definitely feel the difference when touching and comparing the feel of a silicon case found in the 680/750/755p skin case. It also feels a slight bit thicker.

Fourth, although there are cutouts for many of the essential areas of the smartphone, there are some areas that lack the cutouts which I think should have been included. The expansion and SIM card tray at the top of the device could have benefitted from a cutout. The infrared port also could have benefitted from a cutout, although in this day and age when it’s more cumbersome to use infrared when there’s bluetooth, it still could have been beneficial to have access to it.

Fifth, as a skin case, the typical problem of attracting dust, tiny particles to it exists for this case as well. As mentioned in other skin case reviews, either occasional washing or dusting of baby or talcum powder may aid in keeping the case smoother but also limits the static electrical attractiveness of the case.

Sixth, the polycarbonate plastic holster belt clip is included in the package which is always nice to be offered the choice of being able to clip it to your belt or not without being charged extra for the belt clip.

Seventh, the belt clip can rotate 360 degrees in clockwise or counterclockwise, locking into 24 different locking postions. Not many belt clips can claim this feature.

Eighth, in order to carry the smartphone with you on your belt, you will need to clip and carry the entire polycarbonate holster which can be somewhat bulky, especially evident when the smartphone is not in the holster.

Overall, the skin case is quite durable and is likely to last a long time.

Review Summary

Speck Products SkinTight Case with holster for the Treo 700w/wx/p is a decent skin case that not only provides a better grip of an otherwise slippery device but also help protect it against slight scratches and bumps. The protective plastic transparent window covering is an added plus to protect the delicate screen. An added bonus to the package is the included durable polycarbonate plastic holster with spring loaded belt clip that makes it easy to hold and carry the smartphone while on the go. It’s included in the price of the case, and that’s always a bonus when things are included in the package.

Again, don’t forget that a clear and black version of this case is being given away. Head over to this contest posting (leave a comment on that posting) for your chance to win! Yes! It’s THAT simple!
