The Nokia E66 Orientates To Your View Part 1
Published March 4th, 2009 in hardware-review, nokia, pda-smartphone-reviews, reviews, symbianPalm Discovery would like to extend a BIG THANKS to Katie and others at Womworld for providing the product for this review.
This Nokia E66 review has been broken down into 2 parts:
Part 1 will cover an overview of the device including the specs, physical appearance, etc and an overview video of the smartphone.
Part 2 will provide videos of the smartphone and the underlying Symbian OS plus my observations and final thoughts of the device.
A BIG THANKS to Palm Addicts for the recent mention! Thanks!
Here’s another Nokia smartphone device review. This time, I am reviewing the Nokia E66 smartphone, which is a numeric keypad equivalent to the popular Nokia E71. If you are not a fan of QWERTY keypad style smartphones, you may find that the E66 may be something that is more appealing.

In my view, it seems that the E66 is very much a non-QWERTY version of the E71 but with some differences. It has a very interesting feature of automatic screen rotation, similar what’s offered on the iPhone and others. Simply tilt the screen on its side so that you are viewing the screen in landscape as opposed to portrait view and the screen will automatically detect and rotate it so that it renders in landscape. Rotate it back and it comes back. Very cool! This becomes very handy when viewing web pages when surfing or viewing videos and I found myself rotating the screen often when surfing the web.
The phone looks very sleek and offers a slide out numeric keypad at the bottom. Push up on the bottom part of the phone and the numeric keypad slides out effortlessly. Slide it back in when you’re done and it’s back to its sleek and compact good looks. Much of what I’ve seen and reviewed in the Nokia E71 is there in the E66. The A-GPS, 3.2 MP camera, front and back camera, QVGA screen, metallic battery cover and so on. The main feature that sets it apart is, as I’ve already mentioned, is the automatic screen rotation/orientation.

As a smartphone, the Nokia E66, offering very much the same features as its QWERTY key counterpart (E71), should work just as well. Unfortunately, (and this is my bias toward non-QWERTY layout smartphones so please keep this in mind) having only a numeric keypad to input characters and text can be a very tedious and frustrating experience. Mind you, for anyone else not acquainted with QWERTY layout phones, he may not have as much of a hard time as I did. For me, it was extremely frustrating to take much too long to type a few words for Twitter or Facebook. I will explain in more details in the Observations section in Part 2.

*Note. The original “Unloader” page came to me all shredded in strips (part of the promotion idea). It was a lot of fun to put and tape the strips back together to render the promotional page you see above.
The Nokia E66 and E71 are part of a promotion called The Unloader. View this amusing video Unloader-YouTube to get an idea of what to expect at the Unloader website.
Here’s the The Unloader website and an amusing look at how those smartphone can unload and “take care of” all your office documents.
