Being able to connect your Windows Mobile device to your computer and easily access the information from Windows Explorer may seem like a no brainer but unfortunately, it’s not a built in feature of the platform. Although you can run ActiveSync and be able to access the data stored on the Windows Mobile device (provided ActiveSync works without problems), you still can’t access the memory card directly. Thankfully, Softick, the people behind Card Export II card reader software for Palm OS, which is a software solution for memory card access has provided a solution for the Windows Mobile platform called Card Export for Windows Mobile.
The program is simple and straightforward to use. Install the .cab file or install the Windows setup file on your device. Then launch the Card Export program. Once run, you should be able to access the files as a temporary removable drive (much like you can with a physical card reader or external hard drive or flash drive). Then, you can drag and drop, copy or transfer and move files with ease, all without removing the card from the device and using a card reader!

This is what the program will look like on your device when launched (and it’s not directly connected to the computer (disconnected or ActiveSync mode))
Please keep in mind that these screenshots were taken from my Treo 750, a square 240×240 screen and the program is designed mainly for 240×320 screens. So, you will need to scroll up or down to view the entire screen.

To access the data on the memory card, make sure that your Windows Mobile device is connected to computer via the data/charging cable. Run the Card Export program.

Then tap on the Connect button.

Or if you have the tray shell icon, tap on the Card Export icon (the red or green circle icon at the bottom right in the screenshot).

It will bring up the pop up menu you see here. By default ActiveSync should be selected. Tap on the Card Export or use your directional keys to move up to Card Export and select it.

The icon will change to a PDA icon as you see above.

The computer should detect the new removable drive and after a few seconds, it should come up with the typical removable drive pop up window similar to what’s shown above.

You should now be able to access the files on the storage memory card just like any temporary removable drive.
Here are some more screenshots of the program.

The Preferences menu in the program.

The Cards tab in the Preferences.

The Hardware tab in the Preferences.

The Misc tab in the Preferences.
This is what the program looks like when it’s in “connected” mode.

Compare that to what it looks like when it’s in “disconnected or Activesync” mode.

Manual of Card Export for Windows Mobile
Video of Card Export for Windows Mobile
- straightforward, easy to use
- stable and works
- no need for card reader anymore
- don’t need to “stop” removable drive on system tray
I Didn’t Like:
- Still require screen taps to switch to Card Export in shell tray
- scroll to view entire screen
Here are my observations:
One really nice thing about the program is that I can easily switch from Card Export mode to ActiveSync/disconnected mode without needing to deal with the typical “stop” removable device that I’d typically need to do when disconnecting a device. I switch and it’s disconnected.
I really don’t have much complaints about this program. It works. Connect the smartphone/PDA to the computer and launch the program and you should access the files on the flash drive within a few seconds. I really like being able to access the card quickly without removing the card or transferring it wireless via bluetooth, etc. The program is stable and I have not experienced any problems. My only suggestion for the program is to be able to enable me to access and switch from ActiveSync mode to Card Export mode via the softkey (right, specifically since left is somehow locked by my device). That will enable me to easily switch modes without having to tap on the Card Export shell tray icon and then select the mode. Again, I’m lazy but seriously, I have no complaints about the program.
What can I say about Softick’s Card Export for Windows Mobile? This program simply works. That’s the bottom line for me. The program is fairly easy and straightforward to use. Connect the two devices via the data cable, launch the program and connect. Then access the files on the memory card just as easily on your computer as you would if it were your computer’s hard drive. I really don’t have anything negative to say about the program. And lastly, I really like not having to worry about doing the typical “stop the removable device” that you’d normally do with many removable drives. Even the price is reasonable. At $14.95, I think it’s a decent price for a quality software that you’ll use a lot. Check out Card Export for Windows Mobile (at Handango), or Card Export for Windows Mobile at MobiHand.
