Palm Discovery would like to extend a BIG THANKS to Thomas of USB Fever for providing the product for this review.
With the push for green and environmentally conscious choices, we become more aware of our impact on the environment. In many areas around the world, we still use coal to generate electricity so using less will obviously lessen our impact. To lessen our impact, we have to consider other ways or choices. One way is to consider solar energy. Yes, rather than turning on our lights at night, we may consider using solar lights/lamps instead. Leave our solar lamp outside absorbing the energy during the day and bring them back in for use at night. USB Fever’s Magic Solar Light is a solar light that you may want to consider.
USB Fever’s Magic Solar Light is a transparent spherical light. It is shaped like a transparent ball with a string loop attachment at the top for easy hanging. At the bottom is a rubbery power switch/button. Depress on the spring loaded button to toggle it on or off. Inside near the top, is a flat solar panel that will absorb and store solar energy. Underneath is a pair of LED light rods inside a tubular enclosure. The entire structure is supported and attached to the bottom and lower side of the spherical light.
When turned on and in dim lit environment, the LED light will glow and change color from red to green to blue and again back to red and continue changing colors over time. This light can be an entertaining light for the patio, porch, garden, lake or anywhere you need a light source that will aid you in a dark environment. The ever changing color of the light which flickers somewhat during the color transition is quite interesting to watch. The light can float on water and is well sealed to prevent water from going in and damaging the light. For boating, this could help you find your items attached to the light especially in the night since it floats on water and stay lit.

- solar powered light
- color changing light
- floats and sealed for water use
I Didn’t Like:
- light isn’t very bright
- spherical shape doesn’t stand very well on flat surfaces
- light doesn’t last very long
Here are my observations:
I like the idea of a solar light or lamp as it lessens the use of electricity and helps save money. The spherical shape is quite cute to look at and I enjoy looking at the color transforming light as it changes between the colors. The light is tightly sealed to prevent water damage and floats on water. The attached string loop at the top plus the spherical shape of the light makes it a great light beacon or locator in the water, especially at night.
However, on the other perspective, this light isn’t bright enough to use as a light source or lamp. It is not possible to read with the light or use for lighting up an area as the light only illuminates the immediate surrounding area. It may work better as a way to locate something, for example for boating or other uses. With the spherical shape, it doesn’t stand very well on a flat surface like a table. When placing it on a table, it will wobble a bit before it finally settles on its base. It may work better if you can create a base for it. Finally, the light doesn’t last very long. After a day of leaving it out on a sunny day, the light doesn’t last very long. Compared to other solar lights or lamps which may last for hours, this light lasts about a couple hours.
USB Fever’s Magic Solar Light offers light without any electricity or electrical power, as it is solely powered by the energy from the the sun. The tightly sealed spherical shape with string loop attachment at the top makes it an ideal candidate for water use. Unfortunately, the light emitted isn’t very bright and it doesn’t last for more than a couple hours. As such, it’s not suitable as a light source for reading. However, this may still be useful and more suitable for water use in the dark.
