Install Unsigned Apps Easily With HelloOX2
Published August 19th, 2009 in reviews, s60, software-review, symbianA BIG THANKS to Sammy of Palm Addicts for the recent mentions! Check them out for all the giveaways that Sammy generously gives away from time to time! Of course, it’s also a great site of pda related news.

One of the major pains that any Nokia or Symbian OS device user will likely encounter is the problem with “unsigned” applications. You’ve found this great app from a great developer, only to find that the application is “unsigned”. In order to install the application you will either need to hack into your Symbian smartphone yourself or signing the application yourself, both of which require extensive knowledge of the operating system and hacking. And if you encounter problems or make a mistake anywhere in the process, you may be out of luck and may have bricked your phone. Ouch!

If you do a search on the internet for unsigned apps you will find a huge list of sites discussing this topic of how to hack your Symbian smartphone and installing unsigned apps. Some of them will provide very detailed procedures and instructions on how to do it. Most of them involve hacking into your phone, or registering at Chinese forums or websites and requesting for a certificate for your phone and making a request to sign each application individually.
Before continuing, let’s take a look at the reasons why there are both “signed” and “unsigned” Symbian applications out there and why aren’t they all “signed”? Apparently, in Symbian S60 version 3 and version 9 (OS 9.x) there exists a platform security measure to “protect” your Symbian device from unauthorized hacking, installing harmful software like virus, trojans, etc, viewing hidden and locked files. Unsigned applications are software or applications without certificates validated by Symbian. Without these Symbian validated certificates, your device will refuse to install the application, thus, “protecting” both you and your mobile phone. In other words, think “big brother” and “Apple” in terms of maintaining their control over what you can or can’t do on YOUR smartphone. We paid for our smartphone but we can’t install whatever we want because these guys put a lock on it?!!!
Some developers will go through the tedious process of submitting their application to Symbian Signed and waiting for the application to get “approved” and “signed”. However, more and more developers are now releasing their software “unsigned” due to the tedious and lengthy process involved in getting their application signed and approved. Check out this post from Antony Pranata, developer of the great freeware Screenshot for Symbian OS regarding his frustration with the app “signing” process.
But don’t dispair! There is a much simpler, quicker and relatively painless solution that I’ve found to install unsigned apps without needing to register at Chinese forums and sites, reading up on hacking your phone or going through Symbiansigned!

Unfortunately, it may not works correct on some device, if it doesn’t works, please use the leftup cer & key pair included in HelloOX2 package to sign your apps.
Originally, I was a bit hesitant about the application since I’d hate to hack into my phone and possibly render it useless if I make a mistake but the installation was very quick, simple and easy.
There is a “signed” and an “unsigned” (there it is again) version of HelloOX2 available. If you wish to obtain the “signed” version, you will be required to provide a minimum $5 donation through PayPal. Otherwise, you can download the “unsigned” app and have to get it “signed”. For me, if it works as stated, $5 is well worth the money for all the time and hassle of getting unsigned apps signed. And I am glad to say that it works as well as stated as I have been able to install many unsigned apps on my Nokia E71.
Unfortunately, I did the initial HelloOX2 installation without making a video but as I’ve mentioned already, it’s very straightforward and easy. Once you have the HelloOX2 app on your device, select and run it. It will go through the installation automatically without much input or prompts from you. The only prompt or question it asks is at the end, when it asks whether you wish to install Modo, a file manager app that will allow you to view all hidden files. Although I already have Y-Browser installed, I went ahead and installed Modo too. You don’t need to and it won’t affect the hacking installation.
It will go through the following processes:
Activating file system
Unmapping drive
Installing root certificate
Installing ROMPatcherDo you want to install Modo?
Installing Modo
Everything is done! You can uninstall me now!
Once you see the “uninstall me now” on your device, you can REMOVE HelloOX2 from your smartphone since the program has hacked into your smartphone and no longer necessary.
Here are some screenshots of the ROMPatcher app which is what you run to patch and install unsigned apps.
I have, however, made a video showing how easy it is to install unsigned apps. Here’s a demonstration.
Video of Installing Unsigned Apps with ROMPatcher
- straightforward, easy to use
- quick and painless way to install unsigned apps
- small size
- minimum $5 PayPal donation
- wait a day or two for the signed app to be available for download
The installation was quick, straightforward and automatic. Simply launch and run the HelloOX2 app on your smartphone and it will automatically install and go through the process without any input or prompts from you. Just let it do its thing and wait until it asks you if you wish to install Modo (file manager app) or not. You can choose to install or not install. Your choice won’t affect the installation since it has already finished.
Just as easy and simple as it is to install the hacking app, installing unsigned apps is just as simple. Launch and run the ROMPatcher app and keep it running in the background before you start your installation of the unsigned app. Then, once it’s installed, go back and exit out of the ROMPatcher app.
These aren’t really dislikes but I thought I’d bring them up to provide you with some information and perspective of the other side.
In order to get the signed version of HelloOX2, you are required to make a minimum $5 USD donation through PayPal. However, the unsigned version is available for download without a donation should you wish to find a way to sign it yourself. In my view, $5 is not much for an app that can eliminate the hassle and stress of installing unsigned apps. I’ve paid more for many apps myself. Besides, I’m happy that the money is going towards further development and supporting the developers. Without them, this app wouldn’t be available. That is the main reason why I believe in supporting the developers and frown upon those who find cracked apps is because it not only hurts the developers but ourselves. If you haven’t read my editorial on software piracy, please read it here.
After making the donation, you will need to submit a form to the developer with info on your smartphone’s IMEI and other info so that the developer can sign the app for your specific device. You will be required to wait a day or two and revisit the site and check up on the signed app availability. Unfortunately, the signed app may not be available for a day or two. I was lucky to have been emailed the app by the developer without requiring to check it myself. A day or two wait isn’t a big deal again, but I just wanted to provide a bit of info that may be considered a not so positive view.
HelloOX2 may very well change the way you view unsigned applications from now on. Rather than frowning, cursing and swearing about having to get it signed, you’re now like “Okay, no problem”. It certainly has for me! For a minimal $5 PayPal donation (which I think is well worth it), you can receive a signed HelloOX2 app that will hack into your phone and allow you to install unsigned apps without any hassles. You don’t need to read up on lengthy procedures, sign up at Chinese forums and wait for a certificate. Just install the app, and run ROMPatcher before you install an unsigned app! How much easier can it get? Seriously, if you are still going through hoops to get your unsigned app signed just to install it on your smartphone, why not forgo your daily coffee or snack and donate $5 towards a quality software that will make your life easier? For me, it’s not a hard choice to make. And I’m so glad I have.
