USB FeverOne of the common complaints for those who are at the computer all day is that our hands tend to get cold. It’s likely due to the amount of time spent at the computer and having our hand in a specific position that may somewhat cut or limit circulation to it. But then, I’m no doctor so it’s all guess and speculation. Regardless, I do find that after a while on the computer, my right hand tends to get a bit colder than the left. The most obvious way to get it warmer again is to get away from the computer and do other things, or rub your hands to get it warm again or others. But if you are required to be at the computer all day (ie. at work), here’s a possible solution: USB Fever’s USB Infra-Red Warmer Mouse, a computer mouse that also warms up your palm while you’re using it! What a great idea! For me, since I’m living up in the north, I find that especially in the winter time, that my right hand gets very cold. This could be very helpful to keep my hand warm during those colder months.

USB Fever’s USB Infra-Red Warmer Mouse is an ergonimically designed computer mouse that can be used as a regular computer mouse for daily computing tasks but it also offers to warm up your hand when you need it! The mouse offers a left and right mouse button plus a scroll wheel and button for most Windows computing tasks. You can easily use it as a regular mouse and turn off the infrared warming and it’s likely most people will use it that way. However, at times or in cooler environments (ie. those working in downtown offices that have very cool air conditioning), you can easily turn on the infrared warming feature by pressing on the switch located on the mouse cord. Pressing it down once will turn on the infrared warming feature and pressing it again will turn it off.

Use it as a regular mouse and when necessary, turn on the infrared warming switch and feel the warmth on your palm. No extra wires or adapters are needed. It is solely powered by the USB port!

I Liked:
  • ergonomic design
  • rubbery silicon coating for softer, smoother feel
  • infrared warming works
  • easy to use
  • switch toggles from on to off

I Didn’t Like:

  • warmth concentrated in one specific area rather than a broader area of mouse
  • can get quite hot
  • takes a little while to warm up fully
  • can’t adjust temperature

Here are my observations:

I Liked:

I liked the ergonomic design of the mouse. Especially when you work at the computer a lot, ergonomics play a huge factor in preventing repetitive stress injuries like carpal tunnel. The mouse feels very comfortable.

I also liked the silicon coating which creates a very smooth, soft, rubbery feel to the mouse. That also makes the mouse feel comfortable in the hand.

The main feature of this mouse, the infrared warming capabilities is also another like. The mouse warms up after being plugged into the USB port for a while and the infrared warming switch is turned on. You can definitely “feel” the warmth of the mouse when you’re using it as it’s quite noticeable.

The ease of use of the computer mouse with the typical left and right mouse buttons, scroll wheel and button makes it very easy to operate as it is just like using any ordinary computer mouse.

The infrared warming on/off switch allows easy operation and toggling of turning the infrared warming feature on or off. Depress the button and if it’s flushed or flat, the infrared warmer is on. Depress it again and if the button is sticking up somewhat, the infrared warmer is off.

I Did Not Like:

The infrared warming although it does work as expected, is located in one area of the mouse (near the middle of your palm) rather than through a much broader area. I think that it would have been much better if the warmth could be spread over a broader area of the mouse.

The infrared warmer also takes a little while to warm up. When the switch is turned on, you may expect to wait about 5 minutes or so before you will feel the warmth. Keep in mind that it is expected since it is powered solely on the USB port. And, you wouldn’t want the mouse to suddenly get hot very quickly either.

The mouse, once it warms up, can get quite uncomfortably hot. Although it’s not scorching or burning hot, the temperature can get a bit warmer than we may be comfortable with. If you feel it with your fingers, you won’t feel as hot, but since the warmth is concentrated on the most sensitive part of the palm, it may feel very hot. Even though it offers an on/off switch which is helpful in controlling the infrared warming feature, turning it off only shuts off the warming feature. If the mouse is too warm, it will take a while for it to cool down.

The USB Infra-Red mouse also doesn’t have a way for you to adjust the temperature. You can’t set the warmth to any specific temperature level, say 41 degrees Celsius for example. The mouse warms to a temperature between 40 degree and 45 degrees Celsius. You can turn off the warmer when it reaches a comfortable level and turn it back on when it drops below that level. But then, it will be a manual adjustment.

Review Summary

USB Fever’s USB Infra-Red Warmer Mouse is a very unique computer mouse that not only functions like a regular mouse but also as a hand warmer for those living in colder climates or cooler work environments. The mouse warmer works very well, although it is concentrated in one specific area (near the middle of the palm) rather than on a broader area. Its ergonomic design with soft silicon coated feel and a controllable warmer switch adds to the comfort of the device. However, the mouse can get a bit warm and there’s no temperature control. You will likely need to turn the warmer on and off during the day to maintain a comfortable level for you. Overall, the USB Infra-Red Warmer Mouse does a decent job of not only helping you perform your computing taaks but also help keep your hand warm.
