When your work involves traveling whether it be within your local area or all around the world, you need to have practically everything with you, such as your documents, work related items, and laptop and all its necessary accessories. Having specialized, portable travel accessories are very important in this respect. You’d get your travel mouse, travel case, travel bag and of course, your travel cables. Imagine lugging around those twisting, bulky cables with you. Even if you wrap and bundle them in a neat fashion, it will still take up a lot of space. This is where you’d notice the convenience of carrying around a very compact retractable cable whether it be for USB connections, or even for LAN (networks).

Today, I’ll be reviewing USB Fever’s RJ45 - RJ45 Retractable LAN cable which will enable you to connect your computer to any wired network. The cable works just like a regular LAN (cat5) cable but with a retractable feature. Similar to other retractable cable design, you pull on both ends of the cable to extend its length and release slowly until the cable locks into place. When you’re done, simply tug on both ends of the cable like before and allow the cable to retract back into its compact form. No more messy, tangled cables, just a neat compact bundle of cables, readily accessible and fits comfortably in your pockets.

Here are my observations:

I Liked:

I liked the portability of a retractable LAN cable. This allows me to carry a LAN cable with me when I travel without having to pack and wrap the normal bulky LAN cat5 cables. Having this retractable LAN cable certainly makes it very portable.

I also liked the ratcheting system of the LAN cable, allowing me to adjust the length of the cable depending on my needs and having the slack hidden in the center coil rather than having it stick out and create a mess. The ratcheting system also easily retracts or extend the cable to contain the entire cable inside the center coil when not in use.

This retractable LAN cable is noticeably longer than the other one I have. This cable can extend to a length of 56 inches compared to 50 inches of my other retractable LAN cable. That extra 6 inches makes a HUGE difference!

The retractable LAN cable is easy to use. Simply grab both ends of the cable with each hand and pull outwards. You will feel and hear a click with each time the locking mechanism snaps in. Continue pulling until you get to a desired length and slowly release until the cable locks into place. To retract the cable, pull both ends of the cable again until you feel and hear the snap and slowly release and the cable will retract back into the center coil.

When the cable is in its retracted form, it takes very little space and the cable is fully wrapped inside the center coil. Simply pack this compact cable in your bag and you’re good to go!

I Did Not Like:

Although the cable is very portable in its retracted form, it is somewhat bigger than other similar retractable LAN cables. The coil is somewhat bigger and the ends of the cable sticks out a bit more compared to similar cables. Overall, it is noticeably bigger and takes a bit more space.

The cable itself, although its is very thin and flat, is also a bit wider than other similar retractable LAN cables. This adds to the size of the cable as mentioned in the previous point.

Although the overall package is slightly bigger than other similar retractable cables, it still works fine. If you don’t mind a slightly bigger size, this retractable cable with a few inches longer than a similar cable may be a good choice. Those extra inches does make a HUGE difference.

Review Summary
