It’s time for another installment of Palm Discovery’s wReview Wednesday! Today I’ll be reviewing one of my favorite games, Bejeweled 2 on the iPhone and iPod Touch! I may have reviewed the Bejeweled! and Bejeweled 2 on the Palm OS previously but now that Bejeweled 2 is available the iPod Touch, I am loving it even more (if that’s even possible)! In case you’re wondering why I’d be buying the SAME game on all these different devices, you must understand the appeal of the game. It’s so addictive and fun to play that not having it on your device can be the difference between being happy and not! Okay, I’m exaggerating a bit. Besides, depending on the device I’m carrying around, having Bejeweled 2 on it really makes waiting for whatever I’m waiting for so much more bearable.

Although this Bejeweled2 game is pretty much the same, addictive gem swapping game from the Palm OS and Windows Mobile platform, there is something a little bit different on THIS particular version for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Aside from choosing amongst the three different games: Classic, Action and Endless, the game has recently been updated to include Blitz which, for most fans of Facebook may already know very well. Bejeweled Blitz is a new game offered by PopCap on Facebook. What’s different about Bejeweled Blitz is that it’s a 1 minute timed game where you try to get the most points in that one minute. There’a a weekly tournament offered where you can win some great prizes! And because it’s on Facebook, you can earn “bragging rights” by posting your high score on your Facebook profile and challenging your friends to “beat” it. Okay, enough info on the Blitz on Facebook, what does that have to do with this Bejeweled2 game on the iPhone or iPod Touch, you ask. Well, Bejeweled2 offers the same great game you love on Facebook directly on your iPhone or iPod Touch! Play the same 1 minute Bejeweled Blitz on your iPhone or iPod Touch and still be able to connect to Facebook and post your score on your Facebook profile, just like if you were playing the game in Facebook! How cool is that?!!! I think Bejeweled2 really adds that EXTRA something to the game by offering instant connectivity to Facebook. I found that I play Bejeweled Blitz a lot more often than the Classic game mainly because each game is only a minute long and I get to try to beat my best score each time.

Bejeweled2 for the iPhone and iPod Touch is very much like the game you may have played on other mobile platforms: Palm OS, Windows Mobile, Blackberry, or on the PC or Mac, or even online. The object of the game is very simple. Swap adjacent gems to match three (four or even five) of the same gem in a row to clear the gems off the board and earn points. Match three gems and they disappear and you earn points. Match 4 gems to create a Power Gem which with a subsequent match will blow up and destroy all gems around it with extra points earned. Match 5 gems to create a Hyper Cube which will destroy all gems of a selected shape or color through electrical looking lightning bolts. Also in this newer version, there are extra special gems included. You get 2X, 3X or other special gems added and randomly distributed on the board which when you match them could quickly boost your score.

Depending on the game you’re playing, you may be playing against the time (Action), or play an Endless game, or a Classic game. If at any point there are no moves left (no available choices to match 3 in a row), it will be Game Over. So, these games also offer something that will end your game besides the time limit. Normally on the bottom of the screen is a green colored horizonal bar. If you’re playing the Classic game, when the green bar goes all the way to the right, you will get to the next level. On the Action game, the idea is the same; to get the green bar to go all the way to the right side. But, it is also a time limit game so with each ticking of the clock, the green bar will also go to the left and if it reaches the left, it’s Game OverG

The fourth choice is Bejeweled Blitz, which originally was launched on Facebook. Basically it’s the same game except it’s on Facebook and it has a time limit of one minute. At the end of the game, you can post your score on your Facebook profile or play another game. What’s different about it is that you can now play on the iPhone or iPod touch instead of on your computer and in Facebook.

Here are my observations:

I Liked:

Ease of play

One of the great features of any software on an iPhone or iPod Touch is that it’s very easy to use. Simply tap on the screen and an action or task is performed! Or drag your finger across the screen and make swipes and a different action is performed. It’s so easy to figure out how to play the game. It seems like the Bejeweled2 game for the iPhone and iPod Touch is MADE for the iPhone and iPod touch as it seem so natural to swipe your finger along the screen to swap the gems.

Unlike playing the same game on other touchscreen devices with a stylus, using the finger seems much easier than trying to point the stylus at a particular spot and move it. It just seem so simple to play on the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Supports Landscape playing

Another great feature of the iPhone or iPod Touch is that many software will support landscape mode. Bejeweled 2 on the iPhone is one of those software that will support landscape playing. Simply rotate your iPhone screen and the game will orientate to fit the newer landscape format. In many cases, having the screen in landscape format is actually much more fun to play.

Great graphics and effects

Typical of PopCap games is its amazing graphics and effects. Bejeweled2 for the iPhone and iPod Touch is no different. The colors are vibrant and the animation is great. The visual effects when going to the next level is stunning. The sound is crisp.

Four games to choose from

Bejeweled2 offer four different games to choose from: Classic, Action, Endless and Blitz! You can’t get tired or bored of this game as you can change and play another game. Each game is different.

The addition of Bejeweled Blitz is a great idea! To make the game even more lively and fun, bringing a special timed 1 minute game is a great idea! At any time, the game will last only a minute. Especially when you get a low score, you can start another game practically right away, okay, in a minute.

Integration of Blitz into game and connection Facebook

PopCap did a GREAT thing integrating Facebook and Bejeweled Blitz into the Bejeweled2 game for the iPhone and iPod Touch. This addition of a timed one minute game is not only even more addictive and challenging as it’s only a one minute game and you can keep playing to beat your high score.

The integration and connection to Facebook now allows direct connection to Facebook from your iPhone or iPod Touch. You can now post and “brag” your high score to your friends on Facebook and even challenge them to beat your score.

I think is is an ingenious idea.

I Didn’t Like:

None. I tried to look for anything to not like about Bejeweled2 for the iPhone and iPod Touch and couldn’t find any. One suggestion perhaps is to add the special “awards” or “gems” found in the Blitz to the other Bejeweled games to make it even more enticing to get even higher scores. But, the game is great. Unlike other platforms (due to screen limitations) where the gems can be too small or look cramped, this game works fine both in landscape and in portrait.

One suggestion is perhaps to add multiple player support, perhaps with other iPhone or iPods in the same room connected via wifi or whatever, playing against each other in score. So, you’d play against another opponent at the same time to beat the other in score so that you’d progress to the next level or whatever. I’m not a game designer but I think multi-player gaming can be added to this game to enhance it. Or have it so that one person can choose to load the gems while the other is playing it with each trying to ruin the game for the other. I don’t know.

There is nothing I can complain about with this game, which is something that happens very rarely.

Review Summary

Bejeweled2 for the iPhone and iPod Touch may be the best mobile version of the Bewjeweled2 game out there! Although the game is pretty much the same as found on other platforms, this version for the iPhone and iPod Touch is amazing! With the game supporting landscape mode, it feels and plays even better in that view, although portrait mode isn’t bad either but landscape is better. The graphics and effects are excellent and really enhance the enjoyment of the game. Bejeweled2 for the iPhone and iPod Touch is one of the few softwares that I couldn’t find anything to not like or complain about it. The Facebook integration with Bejeweled Blitz is ingenious as it now connects the game and you to all your Facebook friends. This is one Bejeweled game that I strongly recommend as I enjoy playing it daily, especially Bejeweled Blitz

If you haven’t played Bejeweled2 on the iPhone or iPod Touch, you don’t know what you’re missing! And if you have played Bejeweled2 on other mobile platforms, you are missing out on a much better version for the iPhone and iPod Touch! Either way, get Bejeweled2 because it’s a lot of fun on any mobile, although the iPhone and iPod Touch version is much better
