EA Sports Active for Wii
It’s Wednesday! Time for another installment of Palm Discovery’s wReview Wednesday! Today I’ll be reviewing a very important accessory for your device, a screen and even body protector: the invisibleSHIELD. I will be demonstrating and reviewing the invisibleSHIELD on my iPod Touch.

Please check out Palm Addicts for lots of great reader submitted stories and articles plus lots of technology related news. And of course, Sammy’s always generously giving away stuff!

USB FeverYou’ve gotten your newly purchased iPhone, smartphone, camera, laptop or other mobile device. Since you’ve spent your hard earned money on this new device, shouldn’t you take some time to protect it, most specially, the screen? It’s one of the first and most important part of your device that needs protection. Since it’s the area where you are going to view the device’s contents, and especially for touchscreen devices, it’s also where you are going to touch it. Let’s think about this. Regardless of how careful we are with our fingers, over time, the screen will likely get some scratches, possibly due to tiny particles we have on our fingers or on the screen that may cause scratches when we slide it over the screen. Wouldn’t it make sense to ensure that you don’t scratch the delicate screen?

Well, here’s a great solution: ZAGG’s invisibleSHIELD. This is no ordinary screen protector. This is the ultimate screen protector. This screen protector has been shown to protect your device from scratches made by a key! And, if you take a look at the image of the pen with the invisibleSHIELD, you can tell that this protector is so amazing that the pen can’t poke through! Imagine doing that to your screen protector and inspect how well it does! I’d hate to even think of that. Ouch! But, invisibleSHIELD can withstand such harsh abuse without a scratch. Pun intended. ;)

Not only will the invisibleSHIELD protect the delicate screen, but the full body shield package also includes protection for the body of the device. That makes sense. Why not offer the same level of protection for the rest of the device? That will ensure that your device will be protected all over from any potential scratches, just like the name, invisibleSHIELD, an invisible shield of protection.

invisibleSHIELD is an ultra-tough patented invisible or transparent adhesive film that you apply onto the device you want to protect. Once applied and set, the film will protect your device from scratches caused by even sharp object like a pen or key! Although invisibleSHIELD was originally focused on mobile consumer device screens, it has expanded the protection to the entire body of the device as well. Plus! ZAGG has also added a new line up of ZAGGskins with beautifully designed skins that not only offer the invisibleSHIELD scratch proof protection but also the beautiful designs as well! The invisibleSHIELD is supported on a variety of cell phones, digital cameras, gaming devices, iPods, laptops, media players, PDAs, and even watches so practically everything you own can be protected. Well, almost everything since I doubt you’d want your house or car to be wrapped up in invisibleSHIELD. ;) J/K. Hmm. Perhaps, ZAGG might want to look into the car business too ;)

The package comes with a applicator pad with solution, a plastic card (to smooth out the bubbles), microfiber cloth (to clean the screen), a set instructions and the invisibleSHIELD protector(s).

Application instruction

It’s always a good idea to read the instructions first to get an idea of how to do it before you proceeed. You’ll need to clean your hands and the device’s screen to ensure there is no dust or other particles on the screen as you will be applying the protector over it. A good idea is to put everything on a clean table so that you can easily see what you’re doing.

Align the screen protector (with backing intact) over your device so that you have an idea of what and where to apply the protector.

Remove the backing from the invisibleSHIELD. Keep in mind that the invisibleSHIELD is very sticky so avoid touching it too much if possible.

Apply the moistened applicator sponge liberally over the invisibleSHIELD, first over the adhesive side and then over the other side so that you’ve got a lot of the moist solution over the entire invisibleSHIELD.

Place the invisibleSHIELD over the screen and align it so that the protector is exactly positioned where you want it.

Grab the plastic card and start scraping the edge of the card over the invisibleSHIELD from the center outwards to push out the bubbles. This is where you may find that you may need to remove part of the invisibleSHIELD and reapply to ensure that the bubbles don’t stay. This is a very important step that if you neglect to get rid of every little bubble underneath the protector that you may regret it.

Take your time to ensure that all the bubbles are out and keep using the applicator to apply more solution to the adhesive side of the invisibleSHIELD and removing it if necessary to ensure that the protector is applied to the best of your ability. As long as you have the invisibleSHIELD wet with the solution, you can keep adjusting and ensure that the bubbles are completely out. The solution is there to allow you to slide and glide the invisibleSHIELD over the screen or contact area. Once the solution has dried up the invisibleSHIELD will stick and set in.

Once you’re happy with the result, dry up the device and leave it unused and untouched for at least 12 hours for the invisibleSHIELD to set.

Depending on whether you purchased the fully body invisibleSHIELD, you may need to re-do the same thing for the other (body) side of your device.

Once it’s all done, enjoy your newly protected device!

Video Review of invisibleSHIELD at YouTube

I Liked:
  • unbelievable scratch protection
  • full body protection for device available if full body package purchased
  • invisible and doesn’t interfere with screen

I Didn’t Like:

  • applying may take some time and a lot of patience to ensure it’s right
  • body shield especially around the device edges may peel over time
  • surface may be slightly more “grippy”
  • slightly pricey

Here are my observations:

The invisibleSHIELD is a bit thicker than I expected and the adhesive side is VERY sticky which is why there’s the need for the application solution, to ensure that you can slide, glide and adjust the protector over the device without any hindrance (ie. adhesive). As seen in the pictures, it is very flexible and maleable so you can stretch it somewhat too when applying it over the screen. Although the thickness of the protector isn’t very much, if you have a case, you may find that even that little extra bit of thickness from the protector may prevent you from putting your device into that case again due to the extra bit of thickness. So, keep that in mind if you are planning to keep using a case with the full body invisibleSHIELD.

When and before applying the protector over your device, it’s a good idea to read the instructions and watch some videos demonstrating how it’s done. The solution is your friend. If at any time you find that you need to re-adjust the protector, remove it and apply the solution over the protector. You may need to do it lots to ensure that you get out the bubbles and ensure that the screen protector sets properly.

I Liked:

Unbelievable scratch protection

As demonstrated in many videos and reviews, the invisibleSHIELD offers unbelievable scratch protection that is unheard of! If keys, pens can’t scratch your device with the invisibleSHIELD on, I doubt that you’ll cause any scratches with your everyday use either. If you want protection from scratches, this is the one protection you need. Period.

Full body protection (if full body package purchased)

The invisibleSHIELD can protect your device all around with the full body package, offering the same scratch proof protection all over. What can I say?

Invisible

Just as the name says, once it’s on, it is invisible or somewhat. It’s transparent so you won’t notice any difference on your screen except that it’s now got extra scratch protection.

I Didn’t Like:

Time consuming to apply protector

invisibleSHIELD will take some time and patience to ensure it’s applied properly and without bubbles. You will find that if you don’t spend too much time to get out all the bubbles out that you will regret it. Take time to ensure you’ve gotten it applied right and keep adding more solution to the invisibleSHIELD and remove it if necessary to ensure you’ve got it over right. That’s the best recommendation I can give to anyone about applying the invisibleSHIELD.

Body shield may peel over time

I think this may be due to my inexperience but I found that the invisibleSHIELD body shield didn’t stick well to the back of my iPod Touch and the edges of it started to stick out after a while. This is where I go back on making sure you take lots of time to ensure that the invisibleSHIELD is stretched and applied properly to ensure long lasting protection.

Grippy surface

I have noticed that the invisibleSHIELD seems to be a bit more “grippy” or less smooth along the screen, probably due to its composition. Once it’s applied to the screen, I noticed that my fingers weren’t gliding as well. But no problem. A quick spray of Pledge ensured that it will nice and smooth again. ;)

Slightly pricey

For a full body package with about two pieces of invisibleSHIELD, it cost me $30. This may seem a bit pricey for screen protectors but then, if you factor in the cost of replacing your device due to scratches on the screen, I guess you may find that it’s not that pricey after all.

Adds a bit of bulk to device

As much as it “seems” that the invisibleSHIELD film is somewhat thin, it still adds a bit of bulk to the overall device. I was unable to put on a plastic case over the back of the iPod Touch after the fully body invisibleSHIELD was applied. So, you can tell that just that little bit of extra plastic film over the device may add a bit more bulk, especially if you’re planning to put it in a case. But, if you’re only putting on the invisibleSHIELD on the screen, then it won’t affect the case since you’re only adding a slight bit of bulk on the screen and not to the entire device. You may want to consider these points before making your decision. Regardless, the scratch protection is unbelievable.

Review Summary

ZAGG’s invisibleSHIELD offers unrivaled scratch protection that makes it one of the most popular screen and device protectors out there. Once applied, you can be sure that your screen and device (if body protection applied) is fully protected from scratches. However, applying the protector may take a bit of time and patience as the problems with getting out the bubbles may be somewhat difficult. Plus, the protector may add just a slight bit of extra bulk to your device (if full body protection applied) that you won’t be able to fit it back in the case again. Although the price of the invisibleSHIELD may be somewhat pricier than others, if you consider the cost of replacing your device due to a badly scratched screen, you may find it be well worth the money. One thing’s for sure is that invisibleSHIELD will protect from scratches.
