It’s Wednesday! Time for another installment of Palm Discovery’s wReview Wednesday! Today we’ll be reviewing a very interesting looking and designed small sized portable external speaker that looks like a large dice. It’s USB Fever’s Fingertip Mini Cube Speaker which is shaped like a cube with a mono one sided speaker and comes with its own 3.5 mm audio jack that folds into the cube when not in use. What you get is a cute looking cube speaker that you can take with you everywhere. Simply plug into your iPhone or iPod Touch or any audio device that uses a 3.5mm jack for a louder volume than what you can normally get with the built-in speakers. And it doesn’t need any batteries but has an internal one that you charge which gives it its small size. Connect the supplied USB connector charging cable to the mini cube speaker and plug it into the USB port or USB hub to charge it. How cute!

USB Fever’s Fingertip Mini Cube Speaker is an external speaker in the shape of a cube fitted with a 3.5mm audio jack which plugs into your audio source for an extra set of speakers. It is a mono audio speaker that is small, lightweight and doesn’t require batteries. It is powered by an internal rechargeable battery which you charge by connecting the supplied USB charging cable and plug into a USB port or HUB.

The 3.5mm audio jack is ingeniously tucked into the side of the cube when not in use so as to keep the cube speaker look like a cube. To fold it out, simply locate a slight notch or located near the other end of the audio jack. With your fingernails, pull on it to expose the audio jack. Ensure that the cube is turned on first. On the opposite side of cube speakers to the audio jack is the power ON/OFF switch and USB connection. Slide the switch to the left side to turn it ON and switch it to the right to turn it OFF. Once you have ensured that the power is ON, you can plug the speakers into your audio source and enjoy the audio.

To charge the speakers (it is recommended to charge it for a full two hours initially), plug in the USB charging cable to both the fingertip mini cub speaker and to your USB port or hub. It will then be charging. Unfortunately, there is no power or charging indicator on the speakers so you’ll need to figure it out by trial and error or at least charge it for two hours to ensure it’s fully charged.

Video review of USB Fever’s Fingertip Mini Cube Speaker at YouTube

I Liked:
  • cute design
  • ingenious design with audio jack folding inside cube
  • small, lightweight and portable
  • offers louder volume than internal speaker
  • no batteries required

I Didn’t Like:

  • only mono output speaker
  • ON/OFF switch seems unnecessary
  • sound distorts at high volume
  • needs to be recharged

Here are my observations:

I Liked:

Cute design

First of all, this is one cute speaker that will appeal to many for its design. It looks like a large dice but is really a mini speaker for your audio device like an iPod Touch, iPhone, mp3 player, etc. Also, the cube speaker’s audio jack can be folded out completely to plug into your audio device with the cube in a diamond arrangement. But, you can leave it connected in a square arrangement too simply by not extending it fully.

Ingenious space saving design

I like how the 3.5mm audio jack can be folded into the side of the mini cube speaker so that the mini cube speaker looks nice and cute. When you need to use it, simply pull out the 3.5mm audio jack and plug into your audio source. Fold it back in when not in use.

Small, lightweight, portable

The fingertip mini cube speaker is very small, about the length of your finger tip. It’s lightweight and with its ingenious cube design, very portable.

Offers louder volume

The fingertip mini cube speaker undoubtedly offers a much louder volume for the iPod Touch as demonstrated in the video review. So if you’re looking for a louder volume for your device, you may want to take a look at this fingertip mini cube speaker.

No batteries required

Since it’s a rechargeable speaker, you don’t need to supply any batteries. This makes and keeps the cube speaker its small size. You will need to charge it from time to time to keep it working.

I Didn’t Like:

Only mono output

The output of this speaker is mono, which is really not a big deal since you can’t expect quality stereo output at such a small set of speakers.

Unnecessary ON/OFF switch

I’m not sure if it’s that important to have an ON/OFF switch for this fingertip mini cube speaker since it’s not that easy to drain the battery unless the speakers are connected. I have found that if I left the switch in the OFF position that I forget to turn it back ON when I use it and plug into my iPod Touch. This makes me think that it needs to be charge when I only simply forgot to turn it to the ON position. Not a big deal, but I think the ON/OFF switch is unnecessary.

Sound distortion at high volume

Although the fingertip mini cube speaker offers a much louder volume for your music device, I do find (as demonstrated in the video) that at higher volumes that the sound will distort.

Also, the sound quality may not be as comparable to the mini capsule microphone/speaker combo (my review here) or even the internal speaker of the iPod Touch. But it does offer a higher volume.

Recharging required

Since this fingertip mini cube speaker has an internal rechargeable battery, you will need to charge it from time to time to ensure it has enough battery or power. So, it may be necessary to take along the USB charging cable to ensure that you can charge it when needed. However, from my use, it seems that it will last a decent amount of time between charges.

Review Summary

USB Fever’s Fingertip Mini Cube Speaker is a cute looking fingertip sized cube shaped speaker that offers a much louder volume on the iPod Touch than its internal speakers. The audio jack can easily be put back into the side of the speakers for easy portability and keep its cute cube shape. Although it does offer a much louder volume on the iPod Touch, the sound quality may not be as comparable to even the internal speakers and at higher volume levels may distort. It is rechargeable so you’ll need to charge it up from time to time, however it seems that it will work for a decent amount of time between charges. If you’re looking for a small, portable and cute looking external speaker that will increase the volume on your iPhone or iPod Touch, take a look at USB Fever’s Fingertip Mini Cube Speaker.
