There are times when you wished you had the ability to snap a picture of what you see on your device’s screen. It could be an awesome theme you’ve installed, or a cool trick you just found out. But, how to do so? You could try to take a picture with your camera. But, the flash may get in the way and totally wreck the picture, or perhaps the image of the screen is so tiny that you’d need a magnifying glass to see it. Even if you got a semi decent picture that isn’t blurry, the image may not show the screen nearly as well as if you got a scan of it.

What you need in this case, is a special utility or app that can capture an exact image of the screen. Well, there is such an app! Actually there are a few screen capturing apps out there for the Symbian S60 platform! Previously, I’ve reviewed the popular screen capturing app by Antony Pranata called Screenshot for Symbian OS. Check out my review of Screenshot for Symbian OS by Antony Pranata here!

Today, I’ll be reviewing and looking at Smartphoneware’s ScreenSnap, another screen capturing app that will quickly and easily capture an image of what you see on the screen without any hassles. And best of all, it’s FREE!

Much like many other screen capturing apps out there, it’s very easy to configure and use. Assign a button or button combination to trigger the screen capture and it’s done! Trigger the image capture by pressing a button or button combination and you’ve got a screen capture image saved. Of course, you can also set other settings such as where the images are saved, the naming of the images and others.

Please note: I incorrectly mentioned the program as from Smarterphoneware when it is from Smartphoneware. Palm Discovery apologizes for any inconvenience caused.

I Liked:
  • straightforward, easy to use
  • vast choice of hardware button combinations to trigger capture
  • Send option available

I Didn’t Like:

  • no timer or time lapse option
  • limited image formats available

Here are my observations:

I Like

Ease of use

The program is very easy to use. Install it. Run it and leave it running. Either you press on the “Hide” (right blue button) or press on the Home button to get out and into the Menu. Then start capturing the screens the way you want by pressing on your triggering button.

Vast choice of button and combinations to trigger capture

Unlike other screen capturing apps which specify and restrict the button or button combinations you can trigger it, ScreenSnap allows you the choice of assigning your button combination.

Here are some which I’ve found can work: Shift+left blue key/action key, Shift+ right blue key/action key, Shift + green (Send) key, Shift + red (End) key, Shift + Home, Shift + Mail, Shift + Center (Select), and Shift + many of the QWERTY keys. This definitely allows you greater flexibility over the button combination for screen capture trigger.

Send option

ScreenSnap has a “send” option, unlike other screen capturing apps. You can select from sending:

  • Via multimedia
  • Via e-mail
  • Via bluetooth
  • Via infrared
  • Post to web

This can be very helpful if you wish to quickly send and share it, rather than have it saved and stored on your device or memory card.

I Didn’t Like

No timer or time lapse option

Unlike ScreenShot for Symbian OS, there is no timer or time lapse option available. If you enjoy being able to set a timer for the screen capture, you may be disappointed that there is no such option in ScreenSnap.

Limited image format choices

Unlike some other screen capture apps, ScreenSnap only allows a choice between jpeg and bmp formats from low to higher quality images.

Review Summary

Smartphoneware’s ScreenSnap is a free screen capturing software that not only offers a feature that others don’t have but also lacks a feature that others do have. There’s a Send option allowing you to immediately share the screen capture image via email, bluetooth, infrared, MMS or post to the web. It also offers a number of different combination of buttons you can assign to trigger the image capture, unlike other apps which only allow a choice from its list. You can choose your own button combination with the Shift and many of the QWERTY keys on your Symbian device. On the other hand, ScreenSnap does lack the timer or time lapse feature found on other screen capturing software. Depending on your preferences and needs, this app may or may not be what you want. As well, it limits the format of the images between bitmap and jpeg. However, the program works very well and it’s free.
