Sometimes they are delayed in getting to us. And sometimes, they never arrive at all. Even when they do arrive, how many times have you found that your favorite magazine was torn or folded up or worse yet, your dog decided to sharpen his teeth with it? The Zinio app supports the iPhone’s automatic landscape rotation feature that will render the page in landscape mode, which makes for easier reading. You can pinch to zoom on the individual pages or select the font size, plus flicking the pages to scroll and flip to the next or previous pages.

I Liked:

Ease of use

The program is very easy and straightforward. Most gestures and motions associated with iPhone are supported in the app.

Landscape viewing support

One of the nice things about the iPhone is that you can flip it over to the side and many apps will rotate the image to support landscape viewing. When reading any periodical, this can greatly enhance viewing enjoyment. The Zinio App for iPhone will automatically rotate and flip over the image to render it in landscape view when it detects the iPhone flipped over or rotated in such direction.

Quick and easy magazine shopping

I really enjoy the easy access to the store from within the app. I simply tap on the “Shop” tab at the bottom of the app and it will open up Safari to the store where I can quickly purchase and download either a specific issue or an entire subscription to a magazine.

Instant download and viewing

Once purchased, I can instantly download and view the magazine. No more waiting for the magazine to arrive in the mail weeks later.

Supports pinch to zoom

One of the important features that a magazine viewer app on the iPhone must support is the Apple pinch to zoom functionality. This allows you to easily zoom in or zoom out on the image or page for easier viewing. The Zinio App supports this and I use it a lot.

What can you say? I love free.

I Didn’t Like:

Simple and not feature rich

The Zinio App for the iPhone is a much more stripped down version than the PC version. Missing features include the “search”, “annotations”, “highlight” which can be very useful when looking for information within the magazine issue.

Limited magazine selection

Compared to its early beginnings when there was a very small number of magazines that are supported on the iPhone, there is a much larger selection nowadays (over 200). However, that number is nowhere near the number that the entire Zinio catalog offers for the computer. Chances are, although you will find some of your favorite magazines available for viewing on the iPhone, you will also find that some currently aren’t yet supported. But I’m sure that the catalog is growing by the day. You may want to check out the list of magazines currently available and supported on the iPhone here.
