It’s time for another installment of Palm Discovery’s wReview Wednesday!
Please Note: I currently have an older version of the Wheel of Fortune Game which is no longer available. In its place is the Wheel of Fortune Platinum game which offers very much the same game experience except with different graphics and some more features. There is no update to this different version and since I’ve already bought mine, I have no interest in purchasing the Platinum version for a few extra features. Please keep in mind that although the games are a bit different that the overall game play is the same as it is from the same developer but with updated graphics.
I’m sure that sometimes when we’re watching a game show on TV, we get a bit frustrated when the contestants miss or make a mistake, thinking that “I can do better than that”. Well now, you can prove your ability to win the TV show game, with the Wheel of Fortune Game for your iPhone and iPod Touch! Play the full game with all the rounds just like on TV or play the toss up game continuously. Now, you don’t have to wait for the show to come on to enjoy the game. Just launch the Wheel of Fortune game on your iPhone or iPod Touch and start playing. And you can keep playing for as long as you want, without all those commercial breaks too.

The game, is very simple and if you are already familiar with the TV show, Wheel of Fortune, you’ll have no problem with the game. Upon launching the game, you’ll hear the familiar Wheel of Fortune tune that gets played on TV. You have the option of playing, or changing the appearance of your avatar (your animated persona), the sound as well as viewing your trophies and game statistics and getting more information from the Help screen. If you choose to play the game, you have the choice of playing a New Game or playing the toss up round continuously. If you play the toss up round, you will be given a time limit with random consonants or vowels displayed on the puzzle. The quicker you solve the puzzle, the higher your score. Once you solve the puzzle or once the time runs out, a new toss up puzzle will begin. If you choose the New Game option, you play a full game with regular and bonus rounds.
The object of the game, much like on the TV show, is to guess the puzzle, consisting of letters with a specific theme or subject. You get a turn at spinning the “Wheel” (drag your finger clockwise from left to right to spin) which may land on an amount, a Wild Card, a trip or prize, or Lose a turn (you lose a turn), or Bankrupt (lose all the money and lose a turn). Provided you don’t land on a Lose a Turn or Bankrupt area, you can guess a consonant from the list provided (there’s normally a choice of guessing a consonant, solving the puzzle, or buying a vowel plus others that you may have won during the course of the game). If there is no such consonant on the puzzle, you don’t win the amount you’ve landed on and the next person gets a crack at spinning and guessing. If the consonant you guessed is on the puzzle and gets unveiled, you win the amount you’ve landed on. The person who solves the puzzle first will win that round. If you win two of three rounds, chances are you will go on to play the final round which is another puzzle that could win you a grand prize. You are given the puzzle with the subject or theme with the popular consonants: R, S, T, L, N and vowel, E displayed. You have a choice of three consonants and a vowel to add to the mix and hopefully, it will provide you with enough visible consonants and vowels to help you solve the puzzle. You have a time limit to solve, which is a lot longer than on the TV show, but it isn’t that much easier. If you win the round, you win that game and the score will be tallied and added to your overall statistics and scores. Plus, depending on your winnings, you may also win various different trophies which will be displayed in the Trophies section. Very much like I’ve mentioned, the game has a very familiar feel to the TV show.
The game is very easy to figure out. You can spin the wheel by dragging your finger in a clockwise direction from left to right as the animated finger shows when it’s your turn to spin. And choosing from the choices is also very straightforward: the wheel icon clearly means to spin the wheel, the keyboard means to solve the puzzle, and the ‘a’ icon means to buy a vowel. With the sounds similar to being at the TV show, you are almost there. Okay, not quite.

- Sound option only to toggle on or off
- No Pause button
Feels and plays like the TV show
One of the things I enjoy about this game is the combination of the sounds, the tune and the audience which contributes to the overall feel of the TV game show. When playing, I really feel like I’m actually in the game show as all those sound effects really make it feel like I’m there. All the rounds are there and play just like the show.
Ease of game play
The game is very easy to play. Even if you’re not familiar with the Wheel of Fortune TV show, you can easily figure out what to do. With the animated finger demonstration of how to spin the wheel, you can easily figure out how to spin the wheel. And the choices available during the game is also easy to figure out.
Trophy display
For those who are into collecting trophies, you will like how you can collect them during the game and have it showcased in the Trophies option. It’s another way to entice you to continue playing to get those trophies you haven’t won yet.
Stats display
Similar to the trophies, the game also has a Statistics display that will show all your game statistics on how many games you won and how much money you’ve won, etc. Just another thing that some people will enjoy viewing.
Doesn’t support landscape
It would be nice if the game could be supported in landscape mode as the game could be enhanced by supporting it. The puzzle display definitely can benefit from viewing on a landscape screen.
Sound option: Toggle on or off
Playing many other games where there is a slider that can control the volume of the sound, I am disappointed that the sound option for this game is simply either to toggle the Sound On or Sound Off.
No Pause button
I think that the game could benefit with a Pause button. There are certain times when I just want to Pause the game for a moment especially during the toss up round rather than let it play out. However, I can understand that having a Pause button can allow people to cheat by pausing the game and then winning the game by solving the puzzle. Perhaps, they can add a Pause button during certain times of the game and not in others.
The Wheel of Fortune game for the iPhone and iPod Touch truly brings the feel of the TV show to your home, or more like in your pocket. Not only do they play the sounds and tune from the TV game show, but you also hear the cheers and jeers from the audience as well. The game is very easy to play and you are playing the game just like the game on TV except that you’re one of the contestants instead of a spectator. You can win rounds, games and even trophies to show off to your friends. If you’re a fan of the TV game show, you’ll be a fan of this game as well.
Again, please keep in mind that the review is on an older version (I never got an update or upgrade to the newer Platinum version) which pretty much has the same game play and feel but without the newer graphics that the current version, Wheel of Fortune Platinum has. So, please keep that in mind. Sony Pictures Television, if you want to update my old version to this newer one, I can certainly do a review of this newer version. Hint. Hint.
