As mentioned already, this universal car windshield holder is a relatively inexpensive accessory that will safely hold your GPS unit or smartphone for you and yet allow you to quickly view it without taking your hands off the wheel. As the name indicates, it is a car windshield holder and so it will attach itself to the inside of your car’s windshield. The holder is fairly adjustable. The holder is comprised of two parts: the base with a locking suction cup that will fit directly on the inside of your car windshield, and the adjustable width holder that snaps on to the top of base’s stem. To put it together, simply connect the two parts together and give it a slight twist until you hear a slight snap which locks the two parts together.

To fit the holder in your car, fit the base of the holder with the suction cup end to the car windshield and turn the base in a clockwise direction until the triangular arrow lines up with the lock icon. Next, snap the top of the holder to the base (if it hasn’t been done already) until it’s locked into place. Adjust the holder so that you can fit your GPS unit or smartphone and be able to view it without much effort. You may find that you’ll need to remove the base and make some changes or adjustments to get it “just right” so that it’s attached in such as way that you can see the GPS unit and it’s exactly where you want it.

Once it’s fitted on, you’re set. Now comes the fun part of driving

Here are my observations:

I Liked:

Lightweight and portable

The car windshield holder is very lightweight and portable, and that’s important as it relies on attaching to the car’s windshield so any extra weight can make it too heavy to stick to the glass.

Removable parts for easy storage and carrying

Unlike many car windshield holders, this one is comprised of two separate parts. This makes for easy storage and carrying and could be a great travel accessory for those who may rent their vehicle when traveling. With it in two pieces, it also makes it much less bulky than others and can fit in a bag easily without having one end stick out.

Locking suction cup

The rotating base allows the suction cup at the bottom to “lock” in on the car’s windshield, unlike many other suction cup mounts that rely on pressing it against the glass.

Swivel, rotatable and adjustable

The holder itself and its stem or support can be adjustable and rotated to allow a “gripped” device to be displayed at any variety of positions. This makes adjusting the view and position of your device in the exact way you desire.

Adjustable width device holder

The device holder has an adjustable width to grip your device. Simply place your device in the holder and push the holder’s arms inward until it grips it in place. As long as your device is within 64mm and 40mm, it will be supported.

Holder ‘locks’ its grip on device

Once you push in the arms of the holder to grip your device, it is “locked” into place and won’t move, even when shook.

Soft, cushioned grips

To ensure that the holder gets a good grip on your device and also ensuring that it won’t cause any unnecessary scratches, this mount offers soft, cushioned grip arms that will protect the sides of your device yet still be able to grip it well.

Grip release button

It’s an essential feature to have, as it will allow you to easily remove your device from the holder when you are finished using it. Pressing the button immediately springs out the side grip arms and allows access to your device.

Suction release tab

Similar to the idea above, when you are done using the holder and wish to remove it from your car windshield, you can easily remove it by pulling on the small tab of the suction cup and the entire holder will be released from its grip on the windshield.

I Didn’t Like:

Holder can only grip thinner devices or 14mm or less

It’s unfortunate that the side arms are only able to grip devices of 14mm or less or more specifically, the arms can only grip a maximum of 14mm in depth of your device. If you have a Treo 750 or even the Treo 650 which has a rounded back, you are out of luck as the side arms will not be able to adequately grip it tight enough to ensure that it won’t fall. iPhones and iPod Touch, on the other hand, are fine as they are thin enough for the arms to fully grip its sides.

Suction cup may lose grip over time

As with any accessory that relies on the effectiveness of a suction cup, eventually, the suction cup will lose its grip and depending on whether you have your valuable iPhone on it or not, the entire holder will fall. So, I’d suggest that if you’re using any kind of accessory that relies on suction to work that you’d ensure that it’s fully checked before you put your valuable device on it, or suffer the consequences.

Can grip devices of 40mm to 64mm wide

This holder is designed to hold many devices, however its limitations is for devices that are 40mm to 64mm wide. If your device is either less the 40mm wide or wider than 64mm, you won’t be able to use this holder for that device.

Review Summary

USB Fever’s Universal Car Windshield holder for Cellphone offers a very lightweight and portable car windshield holder/mount for your device. As it comes in two separate pieces, this makes for easy disassembly and assembly and packing especially for those traveling. The suction cup has a “locking” mechanism where it can lock onto the windshield, making it a somewhat different design than other similar holders. However, it is limited to supporting devices that are within 40mm to 64mm and 14mm deep so if your device is outside of these dimensions, you will need to find another accessory that will support your device. Overall, this is a good car windshield holder for most devices as it does the job of keeping your device safe and both of your hands on wheel.
