Plants vs. Zombies for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad
If there is ever a game that is so well suited for Halloween, it’s Pop Cap Games’ Plants vs. Zombies. This is one very entertaining, addictive and yet challenging game that unbelievably and amazingly connects everyday garden variety plants like a Sunflower with the dead creatures of the night, the zombies. How is that so? you ask. Well, the game is quite interestingly based. You are taken to a house, well, more like to the outside of a home, your home. Inside the house are people, or more specifically, your family. Outside, across the front lawn of your house, are a group of, well, zombies that are heading towards your house. Your task is to use whatever tools, weapons you can get to fend off the invasion of these zombies from getting inside your house, and eating your brains. Apparently, brains are high in cholesterol, er, well, so the music video says.
With each stage completed, you will unlock new weapons or tools to help you in your fight against the zombies. You first start with a pea shooter, then a sunflower, which helps you get much needed sunlight or sun points to buy your weapons, then a cherry bomb and so on. The last resort in your arsenal to fend off the zombies, if they happen to get past your pea shooters and other weapons, is a lawn mower that will mow down the zombies in its path. However, that is a last ditch effort and once used, there is nothing else to stop the zombies from going into your home.
As you progress through the stages and levels, you will have your battles during the day time and night time on your front lawn, then progress to the back yard, and then up on the roof, with each stage harder and more zombies to fend off. So what do you think? Do you think you have what it takes to fend off a zombie attack? What if I told you that you can get this gruesomely awesome game for less than a buck? Curious? Read on!

The story behind the game is very simple. There are zombies outside your home that are trying to get into your home and eat your brains (since they’re high in cholesterol. LOL). Obviously, you don’t want them to invade your home and eat your brains out, so you’re going to fend off that zombie attack. You are given weapons which you unlock with each new completed stage which can help you destroy various different types of zombies. There are zombies with screen doors, zombies with road cones, football zombies and much more, some requiring specific weapons to be stopped. You start off on your front lawn in the daytime, then continuing on in the night. Then, the attack goes to your back yard and then up on your roof.
The weapons you are equipping yourself with each are limited in their attack. They all require essential sunlight or sun points to purchase and need to be “recharged” before they can be used again. So, to complete each stage and fend off the zombies, you’ll need to utilize your weapons and resources carefully. However, should the zombies manage to get past your weapons, there is one last line of defense: the lawn mower. The lawn mowers will be triggered when the zombie comes into contact with them and will mow them down. But once used, there is no other line of defense left and you’ll need to make sure the zombies don’t get through. And if they get through, well, sorry, your brains are eaten and it’s game over.

Easy and simple to play
The game is very easy to play. You’re tapping on items to select. You tap on the area you want to put the items on. It’s that simple. I love games that are fun to play without having too many things or moves to learn to play it.
Plays in landscape mode
This is one game that deserves to be played in landscape view as you can view the front yard/lawn in the most optimal way. If it were restricted to portrait view, I would think that the game needs to be viewed from up top, looking down but then, you’d lose the graphics and that would greatly affect game play. So kudos to PopCap for designing the game for landscape playing.
Great design of game
I love how the designers and developers of the game come up, first with the association of plants and zombies. I certainly wouldn’t have thought of that connection. And of course, I really enjoy how the achievements screen digs deep into the dirt to show all the trophies or achievements you can get and adding the zombie and Bookworm near the bottom.
Challenging game play
The game, although easy to understand and play, can be quite challenging. You have limited resources available and have to strategically place your weapons and tools in the best way to fend off the attack. You must make good choices of whether to get a sunflower to get more sunlight points (to buy more weapons) and risk a zombie attack or buy a weapon and needing to wait a while longer for the sunlight points.
Side stages available
One of the great things about this Plants vs. Zombies game is the side stages, or stages that are a bit different from the main stages you encounter. This breaks the typical “same game” stages that a lot of games (in my view) suffer from. By offering a stage that isn’t the same as the previous ones, it keeps the game fresh. Too often, I find games boring even though I’m progressing through the stages and end up not playing further because of this. PopCap has certainly made this game well worth playing through the stages.
Trophy/achievements screen
A lot of people who like to view trophies screens will like the achievements screen that Plants vs. Zombies has. And there’s a lot of achievements available so you’ll certainly be playing for a long time to get them all.
Variety of zombies, weapons, stages keeps it fun
Similar to a previous point about having different stages, Plants vs. Zombies offers a variety of different zombies, weapons and of course stages that make the game a lot of fun and not boring. At the end or completion of each stage, you’ll unlock a special weapon that you can use in the next stage. And very likely, you’ll encounter a different zombie that may be much harder to destroy. But that’s the fun of the game.
Last line of defense, lawn mower a game saver
Although you have a limited amount of resources and there will likely be times when the zombies breach through your line of defense, it’s nice to know that there’s still just that *one* last line of defense: the lawn mower that may “just” save your butt, or your brain. However, once the lawn mower is used to mow down that zombie, you will have to make sure that no zombie passes by or it’ll be game over.
Resumes game where you left off
I much enjoy being able to exit out of the game by pressing the Home button and then being able to resume the game where I left off. Sometimes, you just don’t have the time to properly press on the Menu button and exit out that way. It’s nice that the game will remember where you were before you hit the Home button.
Option of resuming or starting new game
Similar to the previous point, when running the game later or at another time, the game will offer you the choice of either resuming the game, or starting a new game with a different profile. You can opt to play different profiles or allow friends or other family members with their own profile to play their game.
Quick play available (needs to be unlocked)
There’s a “quick play” option available. However, you need to unlock it first by playing the Adventure first.
Volume slider for music and sound effects
I love being able to control the level of music and sound effects for my game, as many of you may have already known.
No Facebook connect option
Considering that PopCap games offers Facebook Connect for the Bejeweled Blitz! game, and how popular the Plants vs. Zombies game is, I am surprised that there is no such Facebook integration for Plants vs. Zombies. Perhaps, it’s an oversight, but I think it’s a big mistake for PopCap Games to not offer it as I’m sure it will really bring PvZ to a wider audience.
No two or multi-player option
I can understand that this game is more specifically for one person playing but I would think that if they offered this game for two or multi-player that it gameplay could be enhanced? Or how about offering it in a wireless multi-player game where up to four players can play at the same time?
Can’t play tunes from your iTunes library
Again, I can understand the reasoning behind not supporting background music playback of your iTunes library since it would ruin the eerie mood of the game, but still, it would be nice to allow the player to decide.
Can’t access Quick Play until the Adventure game is completed
This is one area I don’t understand. Many games offer a quick play option to allow someone to play a quick game without going through the whole adventure. So, why does PopCap Games have to force the player to play and finish the Adventure first before being able to access Quick Play? This is one area I have a hard time understanding.
Plants vs. Zombies for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad is a very simple and easy to play game involving zombies who are out to eat the brains of humans and plants and its army of weapons that try to fend off the zombie attack. The game is challenging and exciting with many stages and levels offering different weapons, zombies and even some side stages that truly make it fun. My main and only complaint is that there is no Facebook Connect option that could make it just as if not more fun than playing against your Facebook friends. Plants vs. Zombies for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad is certainly one game that will make you want to play it over and over again, if not to fight off the zombies, but to get the next weapon or discover the next zombie.
And now, until Halloween, PopCap Games is offering Plants vs. Zombies for a special price of only $0.99 for the iPhone and iPod Touch version and $4.99 for the HD iPad version. But this offer will disappear just as the ghouls will on Halloween, Oct 31st so grab yours now!
Even better news! Plants vs. Zombies for both the PC and Mac are also discounted by 50% until Oct 31st as well!
