Angry Birds for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad
Angry Birds for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad

I, much like everyone else have heard about the big hoopla about the game, Angry Birds decided to get it and see what the excitement was about. The story and idea behind the game is that a bunch of pigs decided to steal the eggs from a bunch of birds and pan fry them for a meal. Obviously, this angered the birds and they have declared war on the pigs. However, the pigs have hidden under a pile of makeshift shelters made of wood, concrete blocks, ice, etc.

You are given a slingshot, made up of a “Y” shaped stick planted on the ground with an elastic band wrapped around it and an “angry” bird as the projectile. Your objective is to pull the sling in the opposite direction to create resistance and set up the slingshot and release it so that the bird will hopefully hit the target and crash and hit the pigs. So, in actuality, you are sending the birds to hit the target. In each stage or level, you are given a limited number of birds. You must hit all the pigs or make enough damage so that the shelter’s material will hit all the pigs to be able to clear the level and advance to the next one. You are not only aiming, mind the pun, to get the pigs, but also limit the number of birds you use to do so. Each remaining bird will provide you with extra bonus points. So, strategy is very much part of the game.

As you continue with each stage or level, you will find different shelters, unlock different birds and other interesting things. There are five main stages: Poached Eggs, Mighty Hoax, Danger Above, The Pig Setup and Golden Eggs each and within each, 3 sub-levels of 21 games or puzzles. So obviously you won’t find you’ll finish the game any time soon. For more details, continue reading.

The game is very simple to figure out and play. I must admit that I actually didn’t even go through to watch the video or the introduction so I didn’t know much about the plot about the pigs stealing the eggs but obviously, it wasn’t that hard to figure out what to do.

At the beginning of each puzzle, you are shown the setup of the pig’s hideout or shelter for a brief moment and then the focus is on the birds at the slingshot. I like how the designers made the game out like you’re watching it from afar, similar to watching it through a TV or viewfinder and the whole scene pans from side to side and the background slides to the right or left. You start by placing your finger over the bird that is perched on the slingshot and drag it off to the left to set up resistance and ready the shot and release it. The bird will fly through the air and of course, the focus shifts to keep the bird in target and you can then see what kind of damage it has done, if any, to the pig and its shelter/hideout. The whole scene plays out so well as it’s designed so well that you almost feel like you’re flying with the bird. For each puzzle you are given a specified number of birds and you can aim the projectile arc that the bird will fly simply by changing the angle of the slingshot’s rubber band. The bird can fly straight up, in a parabolic arch, to the left which obviously is a mistake since the pigs are off to the right, or to the right. During the various games, you may unlock special birds ranging in different sizes and colors that you can use in later games, but you don’t have the ability to select them however.

The object of Angry Birds is to hit and attack all the pigs in each game with as few number of birds as you can and collect as many points by damaging and breaking things as you can in each game, which, eventually, if you get through all 195 levels, you’ll reach the end of the game and hopefully find a happy ending. For those who have reached the end, what happens? Please leave a comment below! As you will find, I’m still stuck in Poached Eggs so I’ve still got a long ways to go.

I Didn’t Like:

  • no Facebook connect play
  • integration only links to sites
  • similar gameplay in each game
  • no bonus stages or side games

Here are my observations:

I Liked:

Ease of play

The game is very easy and simple to figure out. Just like I said, even though I wasn’t familiar with the storyline, it wasn’t hard to figure out what I needed to do to play the game. Simply tap, drag and release. I love games that are very simple to play.

195 levels

How many games offer 195 levels? I doubt that there are too many games that offer that many levels. This can certainly be one game that you’ll get your money’s worth since it will definitely take quite a while to get through from start to finish. You just have to make sure you have the time to play it all though.

Different puzzles for each game

If there is anything you can count on, it’s the difference in the puzzle for each game. As you progress through the game, you’ll encounter different shelters or castles as they’d like to call them, each with a different variety of building materials ranging from wood to concrete block to ice or glass, etc. It is certainly a treat to find each game offering a different shelter/castle.

Cute animations

One of the things I love about the game is its animations of the birds. Depending on how the bird crashes into the shelters or castles, it’s hilarious to watch their expressions and they’re also cute to see bouncing up and down.

Unique camera angle design

I really enjoy seeing the game in a different perspective, similar to that of watching it through a TV or camera lens or something similar as the focus shifts and pans from side to side. Especially when the bird flies through the air, the game designers have done a great job of panning the focus, giving you the feeling that you’re moving with the bird. Great job.

Great sound effects

I love hearing the sounds when the birds crash into the shelter or castle. Especially when they hit the glass or ice, the shattering sound is quite well done. Plus, when the wood gets broken or when the bird hits the concrete, you can definitely hear the sound.

Leaderboards

The game is integrated with Game Center so that you can compare yourself with those of others also playing Angry Birds or other Game Center integrated games. For those who love this sort of thing, you’ll really get a good idea of how well you place amongst others playing the same game and on the same level.

Achievements/trophy screen

One of the great ways a game can persuade to keep playing is to offer an achievements or trophy screen. There, you can find and view all the extra achievements or bonuses you’ve unlocked in the game. Angry Birds offer such a screen so you can view all the special achievements you’ve attained in the game.

Integration with Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, Crystal

The game offers a way to integrate with Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and Crystal. Off on the right side on the main screen of the game before you play it is where you can access these sites. You can keep up with the tweets or status updates of Angry Birds and view the videos on Youtube.

As for Crystal, it’s another service similar to Game Center or other similar portals where you can compete with others in terms of points and achievements. You can sign up for an account or simply continue as Guest.

Requires some thinking and strategy

Angry Birds can be played almost mindlessly, without much thinking or with any kind of strategy but, as you progress to higher or later levels or puzzles, you will need to start putting on your thinking caps as the shelters or castles become much more elaborate and harder to break down, especially with a limited number of birds. This is where the game becomes very addictive as you are trying to figure out how to get to the next game or puzzle.

I Didn’t Like:

No volume slider

The game does not offer a volume slider for the sounds and music. You can only toggle between ON or OFF from the main screen. The only way you can adjust the sound is by adjusting the volume of your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad directly.

No background music play support

For those who like to be able to play music in the background from their iTunes library, unfortunately, Angry Birds does not support this feature so you’ll have to deal with the sound effects and the Angry Birds music.

No Facebook connect play

Similar to what I’ve mentioned with PopCap Games’ idea of integrating Bejeweled Blitz! to Facebook, I am disappointed that there is no Facebook Connect play for Angry Birds. I strongly believe that having Facebook Connect would greatly increase the number of people who play the game as it offers a certain amount of competition amongst Facebook friends. However, since there is Game Center and Crystal already which offer a similar platform for which to compete with others, I can understand this.

Integration only links to sites

Although there is some kind of integration of the game to Facebook, Twitter and Youtube, the integration pretty much stops at only providing a direct link to the Angry Birds page on those sites. I am slightly disappointed that there isn’t much more than that.

Similar gameplay in each game

This is something that is a big deal for me with respect to the game. Yes, with each game there is a new puzzle that requires some thinking and strategy, but I do find that after playing a few games that I was bored. There’s something to be said about games that offer a familiarity to the gameplay but when I’m forever slinging the bird from the left to right, it does get tiring after a while.

I am a bit disappointed that aside from offering different birds and different shelter/castle that there isn’t much difference between the games. The gameplay is pretty much the same. This is what kills it for me and keeps me stuck in Poached Eggs.

No bonus stages or side games

Similar to what I’ve mentioned previously, had Angry Birds offered some more variety in gameplay like slinging it from right to left for example or other side games or bonus games that are slightly different, I think I might have continued playing. Yes, I still play it from time to time, but it is not a game that I feel the need to play every day, unlike Bejeweled Blitz! But then, that’s just me.

Review Summary

Angry Birds for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad is a game that can offer you practically endless game playing since it offers 195 levels! The sound effects and animations are great and I love how the game is designed in the eyes of a camera as the view pans from side to side. However, I have found that it can get boring after a while as the game, although offering many levels seems to be similar with each new level except with a different castle. But, that is my personal opinion and many others have disagreed and found this game to be extremely addictive and fun. Regardless, at 195 levels, it should definitely keep you busy.
