www.cut for the iPhone and iPod Touch

Sorry about not providing a video review this week. I am still suffering from a nasty flu and my voice is too weak to be heard. So instead, you’ll have to go through the review via the slideshow and the written part. Hopefully, next week I’ll be better and get back to providing the video review for next week.

I came across this great little app that does what it says and best of all, it’s FREE! One of the annoyances of the web and with the iPhone is that a lot of times when we’re visiting a website and want to share the web link to a friend either through Twitter, Facebook or whatever, we are kind of stuck. Either we try to copy the entire lengthy url via the Copy and Paste and paste it to wherever we want and hope that it doesn’t get cut off (especially for emails) or we’re stuck not being able to send and share that great link we wanted to share. There’s got to be a better way to shorten a url so that it can easily be sent and shared.

Well now, that’s practically a thing of the past with a free little app called www.cut for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The app is quite simply to use. Simply enter the url or paste it from a browser or other app and press the Go button from your keyboard and it’s shortened! You can choose from a list of popular url shortening services such as: is.gd, bit.ly, tinyurl, tiny.cc, uCut.it, to.ly, and many others! From there, you can copy that newly shortened url or email it to a friend directly from within the application! Plus! If you upgrade the free version to the paid version for $0.99, you can also post your shortened url link directly to Twitter and Facebook! That’s handy!

This is a very useful app that does what it claims and best of all, it’s FREE!

More details of www.cut for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad (taken from Apple iTunes store)

This isn’t one of those immersive applications that takes hours to figure out and weeks to master. Instead it’s a small but useful utility that shortens URLs for you so that they can be emailed, Twittered or Facebooked without worrying about character counts or line breaks messing up the link.

www.cut — we like to pronounce it “dub cut” — keeps out of your way as much as possible. For example, if there’s a URL on the clipboard when it starts it assumes that’s the one you want to use and immediately asks your configured shortening service to begin its work. When complete it automatically sends it straight back to the clipboard, so you might not even have to press a single button!

Of course you can also type the URL manually or, in Safari, add “wwwcut:” to the start of a URL.

Once shortened you can email your link without leaving www.cut. If you upgrade to www.cut.pro (an In App Purchase) you can also post directly to Twitter and Facebook.

www.cut currently supports nine shortening services:

* is.gd
* bit.ly
* cli.gs
* tinyurl.com
* to.ly
* cuthut.com
* uCut.it
* RFly.me
* tiny.cc

The ones that support it allow you to log in so that statistics about your links can be gathered.

Simple but effective. That’s www.cut.

I Liked:
  • Straightforward and easy to use
  • Choose from 9 shortening services
  • Works in Safari browser
  • Offers a fix to a wrong link
  • Works as claimed
  • FREE!

I Didn’t Like:

  • Shortening only works within app
  • Still needs to copy and paste to whichever ever app or browser you need
  • Landscape mode not supported

Here are my observations:

I Liked:

Straightforward and easy to use

This app is quite straightforward and easy to use. Anyone using it for the first time should easily figure out how to use it as you simply enter the url of the link you wish to shorten and submit it for shortening it’s shortened. It can’t get any easier than that.

Choose from 9 shortening services

You have a choice of 9 popular shortening services such as: is.gd, bit.ly, Cligs, TinyURL, to.ly, cuthut, uCut.it, RFly.Me, and tiny.cc . You should easily find a suitable shortening service that you like to shorten the link you wish.

Works in Safari browser

This is an interesting trick that will work in the Safari browser of the iPhone or iPod Touch. In the link field where you normally enter the url of a link you want to the browser to go to, simply enter the following preceding the link you wish to shorten:

wwwcut:

So, suppose you want to shorten facebook.com, simply enter: wwwcut:http://facebook.com

and the browser will immediately launch www.cut and the link will be shortened. You can then choose to either copy it or email it. Very cool!

Offers a fix to a wrong link

If you enter an incorrect url link, the program will detect it and provide you with a fix if it finds one or ask if you still want to submit the link you’ve entered. Very nice.

Works as claimed

This program works very well and as claimed. What else can I say when things just work?

FREE!

I doubt that anyone can dispute why I love a Free app, and especially when it works so well.

I Didn’t Like:

Shortening only works within app

Although the app works very well, I would have preferred it if it can work outside of the app so I don’t have to launch it in order to shorten a link. At least the Safari browser trick works well which sort of makes it somewhat better. But I guess I’m requesting the app work outside of what Apple and the iOS dictates it can do.

Still needs to copy and paste to whichever ever app or browser you need

Similar to my previous point, this app still needs to be copied and pasted to whatever it is you want. Although it works, this extra step can be a bit of a pain. But, understandable as mentioned already.

Landscape mode not supported

Especially when everyone knows that typing on the virtual keyboard is so much better and easier in landscape mode, I am surprised that this app does not currently support landscape mode. Hopefully in a future update or release it will.

Url still requires the http://

This I don’t understand. Most of us who access the www know that we need to input the http:// before th link, but I was hoping that the program could simply figure it out, since most of us (I’m of course talking myself here) hate entering via the virtual keyboard and would greatly appreciate if I didn’t have to go into the symbols and enter all those slashes and colons. Again, I’m hoping that this will also be addressed in future versions.

Review Summary

www.cut for the iPhone and iPod Touch is a simple, straightforward and easy to use url/link shortening app that is very useful and FREE! Simply either copy a link you want to shorten, type in the link you want to shorten and the program will immediately shorten it for you via any of the 9 popular shortening services like tinyurl and others. This app works great and unbelievable that it’s free. You can upgrade to the paid version for only $0.99 to be able to post directly to Twitter or Facebook. I highly recommend this app if you’re looking for a free and easy way to shorten your links.
