Word Warp
Word Warp (ad-free version)

Please excuse me for the lack of a video review for today. I’ve been experiencing frequent internet outage today so I’m going to post today’s review without a video. And the software that I’m reviewing could easily be understood by a slideshow and the written review. So please accept my apologies.

As much as we love playing games on our iPhone or iPod Touch, sometimes, it’s a good idea to play something else other than those mindless shoot ‘em up games or others that don’t really need us to think. Although strategy games are good as they do force us to use a little of our noggin and wake it up a bit, but I think that word games are probably the best ones to really force us to think. Today, I’ll be looking at a word game called Word Warp that is available in two versions: an ad-based version Free Word Warp and an ad-free version Word Warp

The game is very simple. You are provided with a set of letters and given two minutes (customizable) to come up with as many words as you can from those letters. Each letter can only be used once. You select the letter from the set and place them in the order you wish in the boxes provided. Once you have a word, tap on the “Got it” button to submit it. If your word is one that is listed, it will be shown and you’ll get points. At the end of the alloted time, either you are allowed to progress to the next level or it’s game over if you haven’t come up with at least a word using all the letters provided.

As a hint, there are a list of words marked with dashes (each denoting a letter) shown so you have an idea of how many words there are and how many letters. As well, there is also a Warp button which will automatically scramble the letters around to help you come up with words. If you’re really stuck and can’t wait for the time to run out, simply press on the “End” button at which point it will confirm you wish to end the game. At the end of the game whether it’s due to time out or you ended it, you’ll be provided with the entire list of words that could have been created from the letters. You can tap on any of the words for a definition. This game not only makes you work your brain cells while playing but it’s also educational.

Word Warp, whether it be the ad-based or ad-free version as both are the same with one offering ads and the other doesn’t, provides a very simple interface for playing. Forget about complicated instructions, this game is very easy to figure out even if you didn’t read the instructions. You’re provided the current score at the top left and the high score to the right. There’s an “i” button for more information and settings. Underneath that are a list of words that are hidden with a dash “-” representing each letter. It starts off with three letter words going down the left column and then continuing to the next column until it reaches to the end.

Underneath that is the current time remaining which will only show if the game is in progress. Underneath that is a set of rectangular empty slots. This is where you will drag the letters located directly underneath into these slot to form words. The words are normally at least three letters and go upwards. Once you’ve come up with a word, you can tap on the “Got it” button to submit it. If it’s one of the words listed above, it will be displayed and points are awarded. If you’re stuck, you can tap on the “Warp” button which will scramble the letters around which may help jog your brain in “seeing” letters in a different way. You can tap on the “Last” button to view the last entered word. And if you’re really stumped and can’t and don’t want to wait for the time to elapse, you can tap on the “End” button to end the game.

The object of the game is to come up with as many words as you can within the time limit including a word that uses all the letters. If you fail to come up with at least a word that uses all the letters, it will be game over, even if you’ve gotten all the other words. Once the game is over, the entire list of words will be displayed. Tapping on any of the words will launch the browser to display its definition. You have a choice of viewing the definition from the various sites like: Dictionary.com, Merriam Webster, Dr. Words, and Wiktionary. This is definitely one game that makes you think, and think quickly since you’re under a time limit.

More details of Word Warp for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad (taken from Apple iTunes store)

“Word Warp is my first go-to game when I find myself out of the house and not doing anything. Every time you see me sitting on the train or in a waiting room I am listening to music and playing some Word Warp”  - AppCraver.com

“Its sheer simplicity combined with its quick playability makes it great to play when I have a few minutes of downtime. “ -  Examiner.com

Word game fans rejoice!  If you’ve enjoyed countless hours playing games like TextTwist, Word Scramble, Jumble or Boggle, then Word Warp is the game for you!

Similar to Text Twist, Word Warp is a challenging anagram type of word game in which you try to form as many words as you can out of the six letters you are given before time runs out.  You will receive points for each correct word you come up with, but in order to advance to the next level you must come up with at least one word that uses all six letters.

Stumped?  Word Warp has a Warp Button that will rearrange the letters for you so you may recognize some words you previously missed.  There is also an option to change the allotted game time to give yourself more time - or make it more challenging.

Once the level is completed, you are given the list of all the possible words and you can tap any of the words to see its definition.

So if you want a fun and addicting game that keeps your brain sharp and builds your vocabulary at the same time, then definitely give Word Warp a try!

Free Word Warp is a fully-featured, but ad-supported version of Word Warp.

  • Does not support landscape mode

Here are my observations:

I Liked:

Easy and simple to play

The game is very simple to easy to play and figure out. The main screen you see is the same screen that you see when you play it except the time remaining shows up and the Start button changes in the End button. Anyone who has never played a word game could easily figure out how to play it. It’s very well designed.

Warp button

If you’re ever stuck, you can tap on the Warp button and have all the letters scrambled so that they’re in a different order. Sometimes, all it takes is scrambling the letters around to help you figure out a word. A lot of times, how we perceive letters and how they’re arranged determines what we see or understand.

End button

For those who simply want to end the game without waiting for the time to run out, having the End button makes it easy. The game ends and all the words are displayed. No waiting. I’ve done that a few times myself when I got stumped and just wanted to know the words.

Simple, clean interface

This is similar to the first point. The way that the game is designed makes everything so easy to figure out. The arrangement and placement of the letters and slots makes it very straightforward that the letters are meant to be placed inside the slots. And the buttons are well labeled so that there is no confusion about what they do. And having a clean interface for anything whether it be a game or app or utility is always nice as it doesn’t confuse or alienate anyone.

Customizable time limit

Although my game was set with a 2 minute limit, you can customize your time limit to be less or more depending on your preference. I personally prefer 2 minutes as it offers me enough time to try to come up with words, but not too long that I’m getting annoyed at waiting.

Last button

The Last button may be helpful for some people as pressing on that button will bring up the last submitted word. This may help some people come up with words but for me, I simply look up the list to find it if I wanted to.

Quick game

I am someone who prefers to play short games instead of a long drawn-out one. This game is designed so that the game will end when the time runs out. This type of game is well suited for times when you want to find something to do but would want to stop when you need to. Such examples included waiting at the dentist or doctor’s office, commuting to and from work, and rest or coffee breaks.

Plus, the game will pause if you tap on the Time Remaining. So if you’re really pressed for time, simply tap on the Time Remaining to pause the game and turn off the iPhone. The next time you turn it back on, the game is ready to resume where you left of.

High score display

I always like to be able to see what my high score is so that I can “try” the operative word here is “try” to beat it. I find that having the high score up at the top is a great motivation for me to keep playing.

Alt based word list for more challenging game

For those who want more challenge, you can set the Alt based word list to ON. This will offer more alternative words which are much harder and more obscure.

I Didn’t Like:

No Game center support

Unfortunately, there is no Game Center support which could have allowed a much better competitive environment for those who think they are great at Word Warp and can compete with others. However, I’m sure that after this review, the developer may decide to offer that. ;)

May look too simple for some

As much as I personally enjoy the simple interface, I’m sure that there are some who would prefer much better graphics. I obviously differ from that view as I don’t think gameplay could be improved by a change in interface.

Ads may be distracting for some (in ad-based version)

For those playing the ad-based version (free), the ads that come up in between games may be a little distracting. If you do find it distracting, perhaps shelling out $0.99 for the ad-free version may be what you need. The nice thing is that the ads are only coming up in between games. I think I would be distracted if it was displayed in a bar that changes throughout the game. I personally don’t mind it myself.

Max 6 letter words

Unfortunately, the game, likely due to the space limitations, is limited to a maximum of 6 letters. I’m sure some of you may find that the 6 letter maximum may be too confining but there are tons of words even with 6 letters.

Does not support landscape mode

Yes, I always have to put that in. Although I can understand that there are restrictions on how much space is needed for the layout to be displayed in landscape mode as opposed to portrait, I would like to be able to be offered that choice. Again, it’s not that important but something that could be implemented which may enhance gameplay.

Review Summary

Free Word Warp for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad is a free, ad-supported word game that not only gives your brain a good workout but also educates as well. The game’s simple interface is refreshing compared to games that offer stellar graphics that overwhelm you. Although the free version is ad-supported, the ads only show up in between games. However, you can spend a measly $0.99 for the ad-free version of Word Warp and never have to see the ads again. Regardless, the game is challenging, fun, yet educational. How many games have you played that do that? ;)
