OvenBreak-Infinity for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad
While looking for a game to review today, I’ve come across this very cute and addictive game called OvenBreak-Infinity for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. It’s definitely an interesting story and game involving a Gingerbread man called Ginger Brave that is trying to escape from the evil clutches of a witch and make a break for freedom. He starts his break inside an oven and then outside over tables and such. He runs over and jumps over gaps between tables, slides under hanging glasses and jumps up to grab hold of candy canes. Through his “break” he collects jelly beans which gives him points and alphabet jelly which, if they spell the word: FREEDOM, he gets a bonus life in his break for freedom. Needless to say, even writing this gives me a smile. It’s that cute. You have to see and play it to understand.
The main objective of the game is quite simply, to avoid getting killed either by falling through gaps between tables, or hitting the hanging objects or any of the other ways. This is a similar idea to the old Atari game, Pitfall, for those who are old enough to remember except you are a Gingerbread man and traversing through a house instead of a jungle. And of course, the Gingerbread man looks so much cuter. LOL.

The game offers several modes or games: Training, Challenge, Universe Express, and Christmas & Beyond. The first two modes are available for playing while the latter two are locked. Universe Express requires the completion of Training and Christmas & Beyond requires the player to “Like” OvenBreak’s Facebook page to unlock it. However, I was unable to unlock it even though it showed me as liking it. Oh well.
The Training and Challenge modes are similar as they both start inside the oven, with the Challenge mode, obviously, a lot more challenging than the Training mode. However, with the Challenge mode, the points rack up a lot faster obviously because it is harder. Since I have not completed the first two modes, I am unable to provide you with any information on the latter two modes. But I am quite sure that they won’t disappoint.
The game offers connection to social networks like Facebook and Twitter, allowing you to post your score in either or both networks. In addition, the game is integrated with Game Center and offers their own Ovenbreak Global rank to allow those who wish to compare and compete with others for scores. For sound, you can toggle between turning the game’s background music and the sound effects on or off. Unfortunately, there is no volume setting and you’ll need to use the iPhone’s own volume buttons to set the volume level. Overall, the entire package is very well designed to make this a very cute, addictive and fun game to play.
Please keep in mind that I have not played all the way through the modes in the game so a lot of my comments reflect and are based and limited to what I encountered so far. So, I may be incorrect in my assumption of how the game continues on.

Simple, easy to play
The game is very simple and easy to play. Ginger Brave runs automatically to the right and the buttons for Jump and Slide are clearly indicated on the lower left and right corners. You only need to press the two buttons to make Ginger Brave navigate through the obstacles. Like I’ve always said, the simplest and easiest games are always the best as I don’t have to focus on too many things to play.
Cute character and story
How could anyone NOT love a character like Ginger Brave, a gingerbread man who is trying to escape from the oven and being eaten? This is such a cute character and story and very appealing to the young and old.
Facebook and Twitter integration
One plus with this game is its integration with Facebook and Twitter, allowing the player to post scores and connect with friends via these sites. Although, I would have liked much more interaction with the OvenBreak Facebook page directly from within the game, it is still nice to be able to connect to Facebook and Twitter.
Game Center and OvenBreak global rank available
Another plus about this game is its integration and support with Game Center and its own OvenBreak global, allowing the player to compete and determine his ranking with many others from all over the world.
Sound effect and game background music control
The game offers control over the sound effects and game background music. You can toggle between turning them on or off. However, I would have preferred if it were offered with a slider so that I can customize the level of each rather than simply have it on or off.
Cute sound effects
The sound effects is enough to make me smile. The first time I launched the game, I was already smiling as soon as I hear the first notes. This is a great way to sway people into perceiving the game as a “cute” game. Well, at least, it has swayed me.
Addictive
Because the game is so simple and easy to play, and the story is just as simple to understand, the focus of the player is to simply play. As I’ve always said, the most addictive and fun games I’ve ever played and enjoyed are those that are very simple to play and understand without a lot of complication and combination key presses. OvenBreak fits this in my view.
No stages. Restart the game when game over
As much as I love the game and find it very addictive and play it lots, I am a bit unhappy that the game is not broken down into stages. Although each time a life is lost, Ginger Brave starts at a particular point where he left off, when it’s game over, I have to start back at the beginning.
Yes, this process is what makes the game very addictive as I’m trying hard to go as far as I can, but it can also be very frustrating if I am forced to restart from the beginning. After a while, this can backfire and the player may just give up and stop playing altogether in frustration.
Having the game in stages and levels allows the player to get to the end, eventually whereas this way, the end may not be reached at all, depending on the skill and patience of the person playing the game.
Not enough modes available
After mentioning the previous point, once the mode is finished or completed, there is the remaining three left. And once those are completed, there is nothing left to play. And in my view, the game then becomes a throwaway as the end has been reached and for the person playing it, there is no more value left. Although I have not even finished the Training mode, I am already worrying about what is left once I finish the four modes. Hopefully, there will be more added. Fingers crossed.
Bug in the game background music
This is a bug that I’ve discovered in the game and I hope will be fixed. Although I may have turned off the game background music, when I re-launch the game, the music will turn on, even if I go into the Settings and it clearly indicates that it is supposed to be turned off. Like I said, I hope that the developers can fix this little glitch.
Plays only in landscape mode
Although the screenshots on the iTunes page shows the game in portrait mode, the game is only rendered in landscape. Normally, I would prefer to be offered the choice of playing either in portrait or landscape but it is clearly much better to play in landscape mode so that the screen can show as much as possible of what’s coming but just for the sake of argument for those who may wish to play in portrait, I have added this point in. But I feel that keeping it only in landscape mode is a good choice.
Can’t unlock Christmas & Beyond
I’m not sure what my problem is, but although I have already “Liked” the OvenBreak page in Facebook and I have already logged into Facebook via Facebook connect in the game itself, when I try to unlock Christmas & Beyond by pressing the Facebook Connect button, nothing happens and it’s still locked. I was even able to view my own Facebook page in the game’s Facebook connect but Christmas & Beyond is still locked. Perhaps I have to wait until next Christmas to unlock?
OvenBreak-Infinity for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad is a very fun, addictive and cute game that offers a gingerbread man take on the old Pitfall game but set in the oven of a wicked witch. This cute idea of a story and game play will appeal to both young and old. Its simplicity is what makes it so appealing and addictive. It’s a game you must see and play for yourself to understand. Make a break for it now!
