TipQuick Tip Calculator for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad

You’ve likely encountered this situation before. I have countless times. You’re at a restaurant either by yourself or with a group of friends. The check arrives and then comes the difficult task of splitting the bill with tips amongst everyone. Unless we’re math geniuses or we happen to bring along a calculator, most times, we’re either left guessing or doing the calculation on the napkin. Yes, if we all have our iPhones or iPod Touch, we can use the calculator app to do the calculation but we forget that the bill usually involves taxes. Calculating the tip based on the total bill including taxes is giving too much tips. Well those days are now over. Here comes a great little tip calculator app that will calculate the tips, allow you to split the total amongst everyone and all for the incredible price of FREE! Plus! Unlike many other “free” apps that are supported by iAds, this one doesn’t. Isn’t that great?

TipQuick Tip Calculator for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad is a very simple, easy to use tip calculator that allows you to input the subtotal amount (before taxes), the total amount (after taxes), set the percentage of the tips, set the number of people to split the bill amongst and with a very funny rendering of the waiter’s expression depending on the percentage of the tips. You input the amount via a pop up numeric keypad, set the tip percentage and number of people to split the bill via a dial and the tip, the bill split amount, and the final total are all calculated. it can’t get any easier.

When you launch the application, you are greeted by the main screen with the male waiter holding a covered dish. There are several fields provided against a backdrop of a wire bound notepad: Sub-total (total before tax), Total (total after tax), Tip (15% defaulted), Total with tip, and Split (1 person defaulted).

To input into the Sub-total and/or Total fields, simply tap on the field and a numeric keypad will pop up. Input the numeric amount of the bill (no decimal points are needed as the numbers progressively move to the left) for either Sub-total or Total or both. To select or set the percentage of the tips, tap on the Tip field and a pop up of a dial indicating a percentage from 0% to 100% will appear. Slide your finger upwards to spin the dial to increase the percentage or slide it downwards to decrease it. The percentage that is shaded is the one that will be selected. Similarly for the Total with tip field, a dial will pop up. You have a choice of selecting from the following: Round tip up, Round total up, Round split up, No rounding, Round split down, Round total down, Round tip down. And also, for the Split, another dial pop up will be shown offering the choice of split from 1 person to 100 people.

The program is simple to use and offers the extra selection of rounding up or down totals, split or tips which some tip calculators may not offer. And this app is completely free.

Here are my observations:

I Liked:

Simple, easy to use

The program is fairly straightforward and easy to figure out and use. To access or input any field, simply tap on it and you will be prompted with the input method whether it be a numeric keypad or a dial.

Funny waiter reaction to tip

One of the selling points for me with respect to this app is the reaction of the waiter depending on the tip percentage, ranging from being angry to happy to having his tongue sticking out and that his head bobbles. I found it funny to see and enjoyed playing around the tip percentage just to see his reaction. Yes, I don’t get out too much. LOL.

Sub-total and Total fields

I like how the program offers a sub-total and a total field to allow for a much more accurate representation and calculation of tips based on the bill before taxes. Also, with the total field offered, it accurately provides a final total of the bill for which to leave at the table which I think is great.

Check splitting

For any tip calculator to be one up on the old basic calculator is the ability to provide a calculation of how much a bill is split amongst the number of people and accounting for tips. You can choose to have only one person paying the bill or splitting it amongst 100 people. This app obviously offers this feature and a bit more.

Tip calculation criteria

This is the feature that I think is its main selling point. The program offers a selection of different ways in which the tip calculator comes up with the tip. You can round up or down the split amount, round up or down the total amount, round up or down the tip amount or no rounding at all. Depending on the selected criteria, the total bill left on the table will obviously vary. Thank goodness this program will do it automatically instead of forcing me to do it manually. Whew.

Shake to clear

Interesting feature of this app allows the clearing of information simply by shaking the iPhone. Not necessarily something that appeals to me, but interesting nonetheless.

Last tip percentage remembered

This is a handy feature, as many of us likely have a set percentage we’d like to give out in tips so it’s nice that the program remembers it and doesn’t clear or default to a different percentage.

FREE

I love apps that are free and especially those that are very useful and aren’t supported by ads. This app fits the bill perfectly, mind the pun.

I Didn’t Like:

No sound effects

Considering that the app offers the animated reaction of the waiter based on the tips, I’m surprised that there is no sound or any sound effects at all. It’s a bit strange in my view. I can’t even tell if I tapped on a key. Obviously I am suggesting this.

No info (i) button and screen

Although the program is fairly straightforward and easy to figure out how to use and navigate around it, I would have preferred if there were an information screen available. Perhaps I may miss a feature that I haven’t stumbled upon.

No expense log feature

I know I may be asking a bit here, but I think that since we are dealing with meals and tips, I’m sure many people are having meals for business purposes. I think that if there is at least some way or extra feature that will be able to log the meal down somewhere, perhaps even with the whole breakdown along with the date and even some place for a note to be inputted. This could go a long way to making this app from being great to outstanding.

No About or developer info screen

This is very odd to find an app that doesn’t have an About screen or a developer’s other apps screen, never mind an information or help screen. I think it would be helpful if the developer added that in and updated the app to include them.

Review Summary

TipQuick Tip Calculator for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad is an easy to use tip calculator that not only splits the check and calculates the tip, but also allows for how the tip is calculated. The program allows you to round the amount of the tip, the final total, the split amount either up or down, allowing greater flexibility in how much is being given out. Plus, the program’s waiter will react either negatively or very positively based on the percentage of the tips calculated. It’s a riot to see. Plus, the best thing about this very useful tool is that it’s FREE.
