Air Penguin for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad
Air Penguin for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad

What do you get when you have a penguin, the Antarctica, predators and a bit of flying? You’ve got yourself a fun game that will allow you to easily waste endless hours of your time. Isn’t that what everyone wants? LOL. Anyway, the idea of the game is simple. Help Air Penguin, a penguin jump from one ice floe to another to get to and save members of his family who are trapped on melting ice floes. But watch out! There are lots of dangerous predators out there that would love to have a penguin for their meal.

You control the movement of Air Penguin by tilting the iPhone in the direction in which you want the penguin to go. Tilt the iPhone forward to make the penguin jump from one ice floe to another. Tilt it more to make it jump further and vice versa. Tilt it to the left or right to make it go left or right. It’s that simple. Of course, you will need to navigate the penguin from one ice floe to another and avoid jumping in the water. As you progress through the various levels, you will encounter challenges such as sharks, swordfish and others. Try to steer your penguin through icy Antarctica to help it reach and save his family from melting ice floe/caps.

As mentioned already, you are Air Penguin out to save his family from melting ice floes or ice caps. You need to navigate the penguin by directing him to jump from one ice floe to the next and avoid being eaten by predators. To control the penguin, tilt the iPhone in the direction in which you want the penguin to go. The angle of the tilt will determine how far a distance the penguin will jump or fly. Just make sure it doesn’t miss the ice floe or it’ll fall into the water. At certain levels, Air Penguin will slide over a big ice floe. Avoid the pitfalls and the seals and of course don’t slide off the ice floe. Again, it’s not as easy as it sounds.

The fun and addictive aspect of the game is the ease of play. Simply tilt the iPhone and adjust the tilt to control Air Penguin’s movements. However, it is not very easy to be able to comfortable control Air Penguin to jump from one ice floe to the other. And that’s what makes it so addictive. You’ll find out that you could easily waste minutes trying to complete a level. Personally, I’ve found myself spending a while trying to pass a certain point in a level and then only to miss an ice floe or get eaten by a shark and have to try it again. But that’s what makes it so much fun. You know that the level can be completed, but you have to make sure you make it through all the way to complete it.

  • Flying
  • Bird’s eye view perspective

  • Addictive
  • Story and Survival modes
  • Accelerometer sensitivity slider control
  • Time bonus challenge

I Didn’t Like:

  • No volume slider
  • No background music playback support
  • Only supports portrait mode

Here are my observations:

I Liked:

Simple, easy to play

The game is very simple and easy to play. It’s simple as you simply need to tilt the iPhone in the direction you want Air Penguin to go. It’s not as simple when you realize that you have to be very careful in making sure you tilt enough or not too much to make sure Air Penguin doesn’t miss or overshoot its target.

Cute character and story

How could anyone NOT love a character like Air Penguin and help me jump from one ice floe to another, avoid being eaten by sharks, hitch a ride on a turtle and slide across a large ice floe? And of course, the story of helping Air Penguin eventually reach and save his family.

Use of iPhone’s accelerometer for control

I like the game’s use of the accelerometer to control Air Penguin’s movements throughout the game. At first, it seems easy as you simply need to tilt the iPhone in a certain direction to make it go that direction but then you’ll realize that you need to get a good sense of how much to tilt to control Air Penguin to make sure he doesn’t miss his target.

Variety of challenging obstacles

I enjoy being able to encounter a variety of different obstacles from predators like sharks to hazards like thin ice and seals. Throughout various levels of the game, you’ll encounter these to make the levels that much more challenging and addictive.

Collect fish to buy items at the Store

I really like games in which the developer knows how to make a game more fun and of course, entices you to continue playing. Throughout the game, there are fishes that Air Penguin can collect which, can be used to buy special items at the “Store”. Of course, you’d need to collect enough fishes, or more like, play enough games to be able to get these special items.

Flying

One of the fun part of the game is when you learn to be able to make Air Penguin fly long distances, well somewhat longer than simply the usual jumping distance. I really enjoy playing the game when Air Penguin is flying.

Bird’s eye view perspective

I think the developer has got a great idea in providing the game from a bird’s eye view perspective. While playing the game and jumping from one ice floe to another, I actually felt like I’m jumping from one ice floe to another. I am quite impressed by the graphics of the game in providing that feel and perspective of looking from a very high position down. I’m quite impressed.

Facebook and Twitter integration

One plus with this game is its integration with Facebook and Twitter, allowing the player to post scores and connect with friends via these sites. You will need to sign into your accounts and allow the game to access your Facebook and Twitter information before you can post.

Game Center support

Another plus about this game is its integration and support with Game Center. It goes without saying that with Game Center support, it’s very easy to be able to determine how you compare with others playing the same game. The Game Center bar will greet you each time you start the game, letting you know that it’s already loaded.

Addictive

Because the game is so simple and easy to play but yet also not that easy to control. You may need to tilt more for one ice floe but less for the next. The fun and hard part is making sure you adjust for it.

Story and Survival modes

The game offers the choice of playing either the Story mode or the Survival mode. The Story mode is the multi level game in which you progress through each level in hopes of eventually getting to the end, which is also the end of the “story”. Survival mode is as the name indicates, a sort of quick play mode in which you try to “survive” and accumulate as much points as you can for as long as you can.

Accelerometer sensitivity slider

There’s a sensitivity slider control available to allow you to set the sensitivity of the game so that if you wish for the game to be extra sensitive to the tilt of your iPhone, that you can set it that way, or vice versa.

Time bonus challenge

Another challenge of the game is that each level in the Story mode is also time dependent. Each second remaining upon completion of the level will earn you bonus points. So not only are you trying to make it through the level, you are also trying to beat the clock as well. This makes for a game that will persuade you to play it over and over again to beat your previous score.

I Didn’t Like:

No volume slider

Again, this game only allows the toggling of game music and sound effects and not a volume slider.

No background music playback support

When there are many games that support background music playback, again, I am slightly disappointed that I can’t play my own music in the background while playing the game.

Plays only in portrait mode

Although the game is likely better suited for playing in portrait mode, I am wondering if the game could still be played in landscape mode as I think that it can still work very well in landscape mode but that’s my personal opinion.

Review Summary

Air Penguin for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad is a fun, addictive game involving a penguin in Antarctica that jumps over and slides across ice floes, hitches a ride on backs of turtles, and even flies to get to and rescue his family members from melting ice floes. Tilt your way through obstacles and avoid predators and you’ll be laughing all the way through each level. I know I did. I was most impressed with the graphics and how it made me feel like I’m jumping from one ice floe to the next. With two modes to play, you’ll be easily wasting many hours of your time happily playing this fun and addictive game. Isn’t that what you’re looking for? ;)
