Avoidance Dynamite for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad
Avoidance Dynamite for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad

Imagine you’re thrown into a situation or background in which you have no control over. What do you do? Such is the case for a game I will be reviewing today called Avoidance Dynamite. You’re in a warehouse full of dynamite (don’t ask me why) and guess what, there’s a fireball nearby. Your mission, again, don’t ask me why, is to deliver both the shipment of dynamite AND the fireball to the Island Mining Company. Of course, ensure that the fireball doesn’t get too close to any one of the many crates containing dynamite or it’s end of mission for you. However, you can keep trying that same level for as many times as you’d like as there is no limit to the number of lives you have for the game. Whew!

To play the game, you simply need to tilt your iPhone in the direction of where you want your fireball to go. Obviously, the more you tilt your iPhone in a certain direction, the faster the fireball will go. So, for example, if you tilt your iPhone to the left with the right side of your iPhone at a higher level than the left side, then the fireball will move to the left. Imagine it as if the fireball was actually inside your iPhone and you are trying to move it in a certain direction. If you tilt the phone more in one direction, the fireball will roll in that direction. So, the idea is quite simple as is the game. Simply direct the fireball in the direction of the exit, as indicated by an icon of a red man running before the time runs out. And yes, by that, it means that there is also a time limit. Move your fireball to the exit as quickly as possible. If you take too long, it will be mission failed for that particular level.

Avoidance Dynamite is a simple game which involves the use of the iPhone’s accelerometer to play. The object of the game is to direct a fireball to a specified exit as indicated by a red man running, supposedly to an exit. To do so, you’ll need to tilt your iPhone in a certain way as if you were trying to move a ball inside your iPhone using gravity. The greater the tilt, the faster the fireball will move. But be careful to not move the fireball too close to any one of the many crates that contains dynamite or your mission is over. However, you have an unlimited number of lives so you can keep playing that same level for as many times or for as long as it takes to complete the mission and get to the next level.

There are four different stages or missions: Warehouse Woes, Danger Docks, Volatile Voyage, Island Insanity, with ten levels each. Depending on the stage, the type of background or situation will be different. Either avoid crates full of dynamite or avoid falling into the water or other dangers. Regardless of which stage or level you’re playing, it will be quite a challenge not only to navigate the fireball, but you are also playing against time.

I Liked:
  • Accelerometer
  • Unlimited lives
  • Tutorial available
  • Facebook integration
  • No internet required
  • Four stages of ten levels
  • Time limit challenge
  • 3D graphics

I Didn’t Like:

  • No volume or sound slider
  • No Twitter integration
  • Landscape mode only
  • No background music support
  • Update issues
  • No Game Center support
  • Boring after a while

Here are my observations:

I Liked:

Simple, easy to play

The game is relatively easy to play. Simply tilt your iPhone to make the fireball go in a certain direction with a greater tilt making the fireball move faster. Just be careful and avoid the pitfalls.

Use of accelerometer for playing

I like the idea of using the iPhone’s accelerometer to move the fireball around. It definitely adds a lot of fun and a certain level of challenge, especially testing your eye hand coordination.

Unlimited lives

Especially when playing this game which can be quite difficult to complete, it’s nice that you can play the same level as many times as you want without having to start from the very beginning. Simply just restart the same level you were on.

Tutorial available

There is a tutorial available at the beginning of the first game or level that will explain how to play the game and the object of the game. And of course, the first level is fairly easy to figure out and complete.

Facebook integration

There is a newly updated Facebook button available on the About screen. Tap on the Facebook button or icon and you will be taken to the Facebook page. However, I have found that the various buttons on many of the screens do not work very well. The first time I tried to play the game, it would not detect my finger tap to even start a game. I am finding that after the initial Facebook button tap which took me to the Facebook page for Avoidance Dynamite, I am now unable to get it to work, even after many times of tapping on the Facebook button or icon. If nothing else, I’d suggest the developer improve on the finger detection areas or sensitivity as it has not been very good.

No internet access required

In this day and age of internet dependent games, it’s nice to find a game that does not rely on internet access to work or play. So, you can enjoy the game wherever you are, without needing any internet access to play. Yay!

Four stages of ten levels each

There are four stages or themed missions each with ten levels, offering forty levels of game play. And depending on the stage you are playing, you will encounter different scenarios, surrounding and pitfalls to avoid.

Time limit challenge

In addition to the challenge of controlling the fireball with the iPhone’s accelerometer, there is the added challenge of a time limit. This definitely makes each level that much more harder to complete as you now have to make sure you get through within the time limit.

3D graphics

I am very impressed with the 3D graphics presented in the game, especially when in the warehouse and requiring to navigate the fireball under a pile of boxes. It’s very impressive.

I Didn’t Like:

No volume or sound control slider

This game only allows the toggling of sound which includes both sound effects and music. You can either only enable or disable sound.

No Twitter integration

Although the game is mainly supported on Facebook, I am surprised that there is no Twitter support from within the app, something a lot of game developers offer in their games.

Only supports landscape mode

Again this is a personal preference. I can understand the reasoning for only rendering the game in landscape mode, I would like the game to support portrait mode as well.

Background music playback not supported

Unfortunately, the game does not support background music playback. Thumbs down.

Update issues

When I did the update to version 1.0.2, the app was originally stuck for more than five minutes at the “installing” stage at practically 100%. So, I ended up rebooting (powering off and turning it back on) my iPod Touch to get the game ready for playing.

No Game Center support

Unfortunately, this game does not support Game Center so you won’t be able to compare your score with others.

Can get boring after a while

Although there are four stages with ten levels each offering a total of 40 games, I think that the game can get boring after a while, especially if you’re playing and stuck at a certain stage that all the games seem like the same. Unfortunately, this game doesn’t offer something that may be a bit different, like a side stage or game that breaks up the monotony.

Review Summary

Avoidance Dynamite for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad is a challenging game where you tilt your iPhone to navigate a fireball across the screen, avoiding any pitfalls such as dynamite filled crates or water or other obstacles plus, you are under a time limit. There are four stages of ten levels each offering various different scenarios and obstacles to navigate around. You will definitely have your hands full with this game as you’re dealing with obstacles and time all the while progressing through four stages of game play.
