Canucks app for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad
Canucks for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad

It may be the end of May with spring and flowers in full bloom, but for many Canadians myself included and some Americans, they’ve only got hockey on their mind. Why’s that? It’s the playoffs and the National Hockey Leagues’ coveted prize, the Stanley Cup. And even more important, my hometown, Vancouver has their Canucks team playing in the Stanley Cup finals. Last night, May 24th, 2011, my favorite team, the Vancouver Canucks beat the San Jose Sharks in double overtime with a score of 3 - 2 to earn a berth in the Stanley Cup Finals. The last time they made it to the finals was 17 years ago and similarly, in overtime, Greg Adams scored the winning goal to send Vancouver to the finals 17 years on the same day. Of course, I was glued to the TV for most of the evening until around 11pm MT when it was all over. What an exciting game but then, of course, the realization hit me. I was so busy watching the game that I didn’t get the chance or time to do a review for today. However, it didn’t take me long to figure out the best app to review, as sort of a tribute to my favorite team to review the Canucks app for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

The Canucks app for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad is quite a fan app for a fan of the Vancouver Canucks. Whether you’re a bandwagon jumping fan to an extreme fanatic of the team, this app will offer much more than what most would expect. You can get stats of the team, their standings in the division, conference and even the league. You can get individual player stats including their birth date, left or right shooter, plus past years’ stats to compare how they do over the years. Plus, you can get update scores of a current game in progress or view videos of game highlights, interviews, and much more! Plus, you can discuss with many other Canucks fans directly within the app. This is a must-have app for any Canucks fan.

The Canucks app can be considered the ultimate fan app as it offers the basics such as stats of the players and the team, updated box scores, plus it offers videos, pictures, and even access to the forums directly from within the app. Want tickets to the next game? You can buy it directly from within the app as well. The app will open up a browser to the official Ticketmaster.ca website where you can buy the tickets. And once you’re there inside Rogers Arena, you can look up the map of the stadium from within the app to determine where you are sitting simply by inputting your seat info from your ticket. Or look up where the nearest food stands are or washrooms. This app has got it all.

Launching the app, you will be taken to the main screen which displays the current or last play game’s boxscore, depending on whether a game is in progress or not. From there, you can view the last game’s stats on any individual player. The news ticker scrolls to provide the latest news from the official Canucks website: www.canucks.com . Click on any news item and it will display the article. You can also view a list of articles by tapping on the News tab at the bottom. Then you can view the official Canucks articles or view social networking tweets or updates or add your own. Plus, you can view videos of player interviews before the game and after, game win celebrations, and other team videos.

If you are a Rogers customer, you can also view exclusive videos only for Rogers customers. Schedules and game scores can be view by tapping on the Schedule tab at the bottom. Tapping on any of the games will bring up the score. You can view the box score by tapping on the Box Score button which gives the detailed breakdown of the game or you can also share this by tapping on the Share button. Tapping on the More… tab at the bottom will bring up a list of more features such as viewing Live games (only available for Rogers customers in BC) or viewing backstage. You can also view photos taken of the team or by fans or visit the Canucks boards and discuss everything to do with the team directly within the app by tapping on the Boards. Or if you’re at Rogers Arena and want to find where the food stands, pubs, or washroom, you can look it up by tapping on the Arena. Or if you simply want to find your way to your seat, simply tap on the Section button and enter the section number and it will show it on the map.

For info on the team’s standing, tapping on the Standings will bring up the standings. You can view by Conference, Division or by League. For stats, simply tap on Stats. You can view the season stats of the team as well as playoff stats. To find out more information on an individual player, simply tap on Team. Then scroll to the player you wish to view more info on and a picture of the player will show up with his jersey number and position. Tapping on the counter-clockwise looking arrow will flip over to show the player’s personal information, height, weight, date of birth, place of birth and other information. If you tap on the green Statistics tab, you’ll view his stats for each year he’s played. Think of this as a virtual hockey card that offers much more than a typical one.

To buy a ticket from within the app, simply tap on the Tickets and it will take you to the official Ticketmaster.ca website where you can buy the tickets online. And finally, there’s a special feature of the app called Fan Noise and this is like a decibel meter where it will indicate the level of noise the iPhone’s microphone detects. Obviously, the whole point is to make a lot of noise so that the meter will get up in the high ranges. A bit silly but interesting feature nonetheless. So with all those features built in such an app, don’t you think this app offers practically everything for the Canucks fan? I certainly think so.

Video review of Canucks App for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad

I Liked:

  • Video playback supports portrait and landscape
  • Stats and standings available
  • Player stats available
  • Facebook, Twitter, DEQEE integration
  • Photo gallery
  • Videos
  • News
  • Game schedule and box scores
  • Rogers Arena map
  • Fan Noise
  • FREE

I Didn’t Like:

  • No bug submit feature
  • Limited number of videos to view
  • App mainly supports portrait view
  • No fan store available

Here are my observations:

I Liked:

Simple, easy to play

The app, like any app for the iPhone, is relatively easy to use. Simply tap to view a selection or use the pinch and zoom or other gestures to navigate around the app.

Supports both portrait and landscape viewing for video playback

I love it when an app supports both portrait and landscape viewing for videos. Obviously, viewing a video in landscape is essential but being able to view it in portrait mode is still great. And this app supports both.

Stats and standings

For any fan, being able to view the team’s stats and standings is extremely important and this app is consistently updated to offer the latest information. View stats sorted by the points or name simply by tapping on the individual field.

Player stats supported

You can view individual player’s stats simply by tapping on the Team and viewing the individual player. Read their personal information and find out their birthday, their place of birth and stats of every year they played whether in the minor leagues or professional.

Facebook, Twitter, DEQQ integration

The app supports both Facebook and Twitter via DEQQ. Post your comments, status updates directly from within the app. And you can share to either sites directly from within the app.

Photo gallery available

You can view a photo gallery of the team and fans simply by tapping on the Photos and viewing each photo.

Videos available

The app supports video streams of the players before the game or after talking to the media or special clips or videos only available to Rogers customers.

News

The latest news and articles that are posted on the Canucks.com website is also available right inside the app.

Game schedule and box scores

Checking out the game schedule will allow you to view the box score of any season or post-season game. Simply tap on the game and it will display the full box score detailing all the penalties and goals.

Virtual Rogers Arena map

You can view a virtual Rogers Arena map that shows each level of the stadium and locations of concessions, washrooms, retails stores and other information.

Fan Noise

Like I said, it’s a bit silly, but hey, you can make a real loud scream or yell and bring up the noise level on the Fan Noise.

FREE

This app is completely free. Unlike the Canucks.com website where there are occasional advertising commercials in between the videos, this app doesn’t have that, at least for now. If you’re a Canucks fan, there’s no reason for you NOT to get this app.

I Didn’t Like:

No bug submit feature

The app from time to time, can crash without any notice. In those situations, I would have preferred to be able to submit a bug to the developers in hopes that they can fix it in a future update. But unfortunately there is no such feature.

Limited number of videos to view

Although it’s nice that we can view videos, there is a certain limit of videos that can be viewed. As a Canucks fan, I would love to view more and it’s unfortunate that unlike the Canucks.com website, I can’t view the “next page” of videos. ;)

App mainly supports portrait mode

Again this is a personal preference. I can understand the reasoning for only rendering the game in portrait mode for better viewing of stats and information. However, I would like the game to support landscape mode as well.

No fan shop support

I am somewhat surprised by this, but then, I’m not entirely surprised due to licensing agreements of fan merchandise. However, I would LOVE to be able to view the list of fan merchandise for the Canucks directly from within the app. I actually bought my Western Conference cap and the We Believe t-shirt from shop.nhl.com but would have bought it from within the app if it supported it.

Review Summary

The Canucks app for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad is quite a fan worthy app that does a great job of showcasing the Vancouver Canucks hockey team. You can view videos of the players, coaches and others, plus photos of the team and fans, connect with other fans through the Canucks boards, share Canucks related comments with others on Twitter and Facebook, view stats on the team and players plus much more. This is definitely an excellent Canucks app for any fan. Check it out yourself here.
