Frisbee Forever

Frisbee Forever (iTunes Canada)

Ahh. Summer. Barbeques. Picnics. And frisbees! Yes! One of the popular games people play during summer especially at barbeques and picnics are throwing around a frisbee. Well here’s a game that offers the same theme except you won’t get sunburned while playing it. Frisbee Forever by Kiloo, under license by Wham-O the makers of the frisbee is a game that captures the excitement of the frisbee, in that you are going and flying through the path of the frisbee. Yes! It’s sort of like watching a movie in which you are flying the path of a bullet or something and you get to experience the excitement of flying through the air, except the perspective is just behind the actual frisbee itself as you will view the frisbee ahead of you and you will try to steer it in the direction you want it to go.

Frisbee Forever is a game that involves throwing a frisbee towards a set of targets comprising of stars, rings, triangles, etc and hitting them or passing through them in order to collect coins and progress to the next level. In higher levels, in addition to collecting coins, you will also need to avoid hitting obstacles such as saws and others. You start by flicking with your finger in an upward motion to throw the frisbee in the forward direction and then steer the frisbee left or right using the directional keys (left and right of the iPhone) or tilt it in the direction. Your objective is to collect as many stars along the way and pass through the rings, triangles in order to progress through the level. Sounds easy, right? Well, it is easy in the first few levels but it gets harder as you progress, much like most games. And with over 100 levels, you will definitely kill some time with this game. ;)

The objective of the game is to steer a frisbee through an obstacle course comprised of rings, triangles and sprinkled with stars along the way while avoiding hitting obstacles such as trees, houses, ferris wheels, etc. You start the game by flicking your finger upwards to throw the frisbee and then you will need to start steering the frisbee towards the rings, triangles, and stars either by pressing on the directional left and right buttons located on the left and right of the iPhone or by tilting the iPhone to the left or right. You will need to set or change the controls by pressing the pause button. As you pass through each ring or triangle, the frisbee will get a boost which will propel it through to the next ring. However, if you miss the ring or triangle, the frisbee will eventually slow down and drop to the ground. If you pass through some of the triangles or rings to get to the end of the course, you will advance to the next level. Depending on how many stars you collected and how many rings you passed, you will be given either a Bronze, Silver or Gold medal. Even if you don’t advance on the first or numbered try, you can also advance simply by playing as the number of stars collected will accumulate and push the progress bar along until you reach the next level. So, in this case, persistence pays, even if your expertise doesn’t. ;)

During the course of the game, you will find stars located at specific locations along the way. The more stars you collect or hit, the more coins you will get. However, don’t try too hard to collect the stars as you may find that you’ll miss the rings which will not allow you to complete the course. You can also collect special stars which will allow you to unlock levels. You can also collect trophies and frisbees along the way. The more you play, the more you will collect.

Plus, with each game you play, you’ll collect more stars and the special stars, which will eventually accumulate enough to allow you to unlock additional levels, or use the coins to buy from a variety of different frisbees.

I Didn’t Like:

  • no ad-free version
  • sound and music toggle on or off
  • no Facebook or Twitter integration
  • no bug submit feature
  • no About screen

Here are my observations:

I Liked:

Easy to play

The game is fairly easy to figure out and play. When you launch the game for the first time, there are a few screens that show how to play the game and the controls selection. However, it didn’t show where the directional buttons are located. I didn’t figure out until I started playing a few games that there’s a lightly shaded directional button on the left and right.

Button or tilt control

I like being given the choice of playing the game by pressing the virtual buttons or tilting the iPhone to direct the frisbee. I actually enjoy playing using the tilt control as it adds an extra level of challenge to the game play.

Great retina display graphics

The graphics are stunning as the imagery is very sharp and clear. I am very impressed with the level of graphics rendered in the game.

Great visual effects

I am very impressed with the visual effects presented in the game. The rendering of the frisbee when it’s flying quickly as opposed to when it’s slowing down and floating and hitting the ground is quite amazing. Very well presented.

Great sound effects

I like the sound effects, although not as much as I would like, as you would have to encounter a few things to hear it. Of course, when the frisbee hits something, it gives a thud sound. One time, I had the frisbee drop down to the water and I got to hear the splosh.

Trophies collection

As you play the game, you may be awarded specific trophies such as the Crash Helmet, Suntan lotion and others. It’s a cool way to entice you to keep playing for the sake of collecting these interesting trophies.

Frisbees collection

Similar to the trophies award, the game may award special frisbees as well. Or, you can also use your coins to purchase frisbees. There’s a huge variety of frisbees to choose from.

Levels unlock with stars

Here’s another way that the developers come up with to encourage you to keep playing. Many of the levels or stages can only be unlocked with a certain number of special stars, which you can only get by playing. Keep playing in order to collect enough stars to unlock the next levels.

Shop available

For those who can’t wait to play or unlock levels, you can purchase additional stars to get you there so you don’t have to wait or have to play for hours on end to get the stars needed. You can also buy frisbees, extras as well in the Shop.

FREE

Originally, the game was available for $2.99 but it is now currently FREE, with ads that may pop up.

Offline play supported

Aside from the initial launch which requires internet access, the game can be played offline.

Select game in level supported

You can choose the game you wish to play in a specific level or stage, rather than being stuck playing from 1 to 2, and then 3 and so on. You can select to play 10 first, then jump to 7 and whatever level you wish.

Replay a game supported

In order to get the gold medal, you can replay the same game over and over again until you achieve the gold medal, rather than be stuck only being able to go to the next game.

Game Center supported

The game supports Game Center, as the Game Center bar popped up when I first launched the game. I’m sure many enjoy a game that has Game Center support.

Background music playback supported

I really like it when a game supports background music playback so when I get sick of the game music that I can play whatever song I want from my iPod Touch and play.

I Didn’t Like:

No ad-free version available

This is somewhat strange that the game was originally available in an ad-free version for $2.99 but it’s no longer available and you are stuck with the free version with ads. I would prefer to be able to pay for an ad-free version if available.

Sound and music only toggles on or off

I always dislike it when a game or app doesn’t offer a slider for the volume level of the sound effects and music and require me to use the volume button on my device.

No Facebook or Twitter integration

I’m a bit surprised that, although there is a Kiloo Facebook page that there is no Facebook fan page for the Frisbee Forever game and there’s no link to the Kiloo Facebook page either within the app. Plus, since the founder of Kiloo, Jacob Moller has a Twitter page, that there’s no official Kiloo Twitter page either.

No bug submit feature

I haven’t encountered any bugs while playing but I always think that it’s a good idea to offer a bug submit feature which allows anyone to help developers find and fix bugs in the app.

No About screen

I am a bit surprised that there is no “About” screen available where there’s a bit of blurb on the developers of the game and perhaps a contact email address. Perhaps, they will add one in after my review. ;)

Review Summary

Frisbee Forever is quite an addictive free game involving throwing a frisbee through an obstacle course of rings, trees, houses. Collect stars and coins to buy new frisbees, special stars to unlock new levels or extras such as boosts. The game is ad-supported so expect to see some ads when playing, although it’s not so often that you will be turned off. There is no ad-free version available, although it was previously available for $2.99. Perhaps they will reconsider and come out with an ad-free version again?
