Flick Soccer! for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad
Flick Soccer! for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad

Flick Soccer! (iTunes Canada)

Well, we are nearing the end of summer now with the last day of August upon us and it’s back to school time. However, that doesn’t mean that the outdoor activities make a sudden stop. No. With the fall fast approaching, that means the soccer or football season will be kicking in high gear. Yes, that means the rain, the mud and colder conditions. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to deal with all that. Enjoy the excitement of soccer/football in the comfort of your own home with this game I’ll be reviewing today called Flick Soccer! from the same developer, Full Fat who developed the other Flick! games like Flick Golf! and Flick Golf Extreme! Have the same experience and enjoyment of those other Flick games but in a soccer/football environment.

The game involves you, the scorer, attempting to kick a soccer ball towards a target which is well depicted as a typical bulls eye round target located at various position inside the goal/net. There are several modes to choose from ranging from challenge to endurance mode and others with each involving you, the shooter kicking the soccer ball towards the goal/net, very much like a penalty kick. The target may move around and the defenders may appear in an attempt to block your shot, increasing the challenge. And when you score by hitting the target inside the goal/net, the crowd reacts, very much like in a real soccer/football game, making you feel like you are right there. This is definitely a game to check out.

For those who want to skip over all the detailed review and just want a summary, you can jump to the review summary

The game is very simple. You are the opponent given a penalty shot at a goal/net. There is a bulls eye target that is located somewhere inside the goal/net. Your object is to kick and direct the flying soccer ball towards as close to or hitting the target. The closer the ball hits the target, the higher the points you’ll receive as well as earning bonus time (in time limit games) or you will continue to be able to keep shooting (in the endurance mode). Keep playing and trying to get close or hit the target to allow you to extend your game, similar to the Flick Golf games I’ve previously reviewed.

To play any game, first select the type or mode from the available choices. You will be provided a screen that explains what you need to do. Regardless of the game chosen, you are expected to shoot the soccer ball at the target, whether it be an actual bulls eye target, or a crossbar or glass panes. To shoot, flick your finger in an upward or somewhat upward direction on the iPhone screen. The longer you flick your finger on the screen, the harder the shot, again, similar to Flick Golf! Just like Flick Golf!, you can also move and direct the ball in a direction you choose by simply dragging your finger across the screen. If you wish to curve the ball to the left, simply swipe to the left and vice versa for the right direction. Or if you wish it to go up or down, swipe in an upward or downward motion. Depending on what the target is (bulls eye, crossbar or glass), if you hit it, you’ll earn points as well as earning extra time, or getting the opportunity to play again without losing your alloted chances.

As mentioned previously, there are several modes of game play available: Quickshot, Endurance, Challenge, Crossbar and Smash it! Quickshot involes a time limit game in which you try to hit as many targets in the alloted time as possible. If you hit near the bulls eye or even the bulls eye, you will be given bonus points and bonus time to extend your game time. However, if you miss the goal/net or simply shoot a goal but miss the target, you won’t earn any bonus time.

Endurance is in essence, a do or die mode, sudden death type of game. You are given three soccer balls. Your objective is to hit the bulls eye of the target or at least very close to it on every shot. If you fail to do so, even if you get a goal, you lose one soccer ball. When all three soccer balls are used up, the game is over. However, at different times, you may find a moving x2 or a moving orange ball. If you hit the x2, you will get two times the points and you’ll get a bonus ball if you hit the orange ball. Similar to the Quickshot mode, if you hit close to the bulls eye, you will get bonus points and bonus time, thus extending your game time and allowing you to get higher scores and achieving a higher rank or level.

Challenge offers you five shots at the goal/net. Try to get a bulls eye for each shot to win either a bronze, silver or gold trophy with the gold being the hardest to get. There are five different level challenges: Trainee, Semi-Pro, Professional, World Class, and Superstar and each challenge being much more harder to play and each trophy requiring much higher scores to win it.

Crossbar offers somewhat of a different take on the game. Rather than trying to shoot at a bulls eye, you are now trying to hit the crossbar, the horizontal bar at the top of the net. You are given a time limit of 60 seconds to hit the crossbar as many times as you can. There is a moving x2 that moves back and forth from left to right on the crossbar. Hit that and the crossbar to get bonus points. However, unlike the other games, hitting the crossbar won’t give you any bonus time. But, if you hit the crossbar consecutive times, you will get bonus points for each consecutive hit.

Smash It!, the last mode involves a goal/net with various glass panels covering it. Your objective is to smash the glass panels as quickly as you can. If you miss and the ball hits a defenseman or the goalie, valuable time will be wasted as the ball gets deflected away. This game offers a bit of the target shooting as well as the challenge of working against time.

Video review of Flick Soccer! for iPhone and iPod Touch, and iPad at YouTube

I Liked:
  • easy to play
  • how to play screens
  • amazing graphics
  • great sound effects
  • trophies and awards
  • Facebook integration
  • Twitter integration
  • Game Center supported
  • Volume slider
  • Background music playback support
  • Three games available
  • offline playing supported
  • realistic defensemen and goalie

I Didn’t Like:

  • No side or bonus games
  • No trophy case or room
  • No contact link
  • no bug submit feature
  • Not a full 90 minute soccer/football game
  • Here are my observations:

    I Liked:

    Easy to play

The game, especially if you have played or watched my video reviews of the Flick games, is very easy to play once you play it or watch a demonstration.

    How to play screens

If you go into the question mark ? or Help screen, you will be going through their Tutorial screen. It does ask you if you want to go through the tutorial first. If you said yes, there will be pop ups explaining what to do and how to play the ball. You’ll learn about curving or spinning the ball to aim for the targets.

    Amazing graphics

Just like Flick Golf! and Flick Golf Extreme! the game offers amazing graphics. The grass, the crowd, the players are very well defined, sharp.

    Great sounds effects

Again, the sound effects are excellent. The roaring of the crowds when you hit the bulls eye is very realistic. The crowd in the background and the blowing of the whistle sounds very life like.

    Trophies and award

You can win bronze, silver and gold trophies in the Challenge mode. However, there is no trophy collection where you can view all the trophies you’ve won. You can, however be able to view your standings in Game Center and your achievements and accomplishments. But, the stats screen only shows your score and not the trophies. To view the highest trophy won for the Challenge mode, you will have to launch the Challenge mode and flip through the various challenges to view. I would much prefer to be able to view all the trophies in a particular screen so that I can click on and view info on each award. Unfortunately, there is no such display screen.

    Facebook integration

The game offers the player to access the Flick Soccer! fan page. However, it is hidden in the Full Fat more games page, which, may be missed by some if they didn’t check it out.

    Twitter integration

The game offers a link to the Full Fat Twitter page. Again, it’s located in the more Full Fat games screen.

    Game Center support

The game supports Game Center. You can view your achievements for each game against others in the Game Center leaderboard screens.

    Volume slider

Again, this game offers the volume slider for both the music and the sound effects, allowing me to completely turn off the music so that I can play my own music in the background, which is what my next point is about.

    Background music playback supported

Yay! This game supports background music playback support, so I can play my favorite music while playing the game. This is another big plus for me.

    Five games available

You can choose from among the five different games available: Quickshot, Endurance, Challenge, Crossbar and Smash It!, each offering a slight different gameplay to keep the game fresh.

    Offline playing supported

The game supports offline playing, which is a big plus for me as I always want to play games when I’m not connected or have internet connection. Let’s face it. It’s not very likely you’ll be able to get on the internet at the doctor’s office or other places where you’re waiting so it’s nice that it supports offline playing.

    Realistic defensemen blocking shots

I am very impressed with the action or reaction of the goalie and the defensemen in blocking the shots. They are very realistic. When the ball hits them, they instinctively curl up as if they felt the blow.

    I Didn’t Like:

    No side or bonus games

Similar to my points for Flick Golf! and Flick Golf Extreme!, although there are five different modes to choose from for playing, the same idea of kicking a penalty shot at the goalie is in all of them. I would think that after a while of playing that people may find it boring as they’re essentially playing the same game, regardless of the challenges.

    No trophy case or room

There is no trophy case or room or at least a screen that displays the trophies. If you unlock or win a trophy, you’ll see a screen and that’s it. After you’ve unlocked the trophy, the only way you can view it is if you launch the Challenge and view each level of challenge. But, it only shows the highest unlocked trophy. And the achievements screen is more of a stats screen and doesn’t indicate the trophies won.

    No Contact link

Again, this game doesn’t offer a contact link to the developers. There is a credits screen which lists the credits for the game development but there’s no email address link or anything.

    No bug submit option

I always like a game that offers some kind of bug submission support. Especially when a game is new, there’s a great possibility that the bugs haven’t been found or fixed yet and this is when a bug submit option which offers a quick email to the developer with a log of what happened could be very helpful for both the end user and the developer. Unfortunately, it’s not available for this game.

    Not a full soccer/football game

This game is not a real 90 minute football game but more of a penalty kick game, similar to the Flick Golf! only playing the shot to the hole instead of the 18 hole game. It does evoke excitement when playing as you are getting instant gratification when you hit the target with the crowd roaring, but after a while, it doesn’t work and only gets boring. Similar to my previous point about playing the same game will get boring, it would be nice if there is a different side game available. One suggestion is to play the passing or dribbling moves with a fellow teammate. Or, perhaps allow the player to be the goalie and try to stop the shots instead. Anything that will break the monotony would help.

    Review Summary

Flick Soccer! for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad offers the same kind of instant gratification gameplay as Flick Golf! and Flick Golf Extreme in that you are shooting a penalty shot. Flick your finger to shoot the ball and curve it in the direction you want by swiping your finger across the screen in the direction you want it. With five games to choose from, and trophies to be won in the Challenge mode, you’re guaranteed endless hours of playing at home without the wet and muddy socks.
