Stitcher Radio for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad

Stitcher Radio (iTunes Canada)

Rain has finally arrived with the beginning of October for many of us. Especially with the much cooler air and the falling leaves on the ground, plus the wet weather we are more inclined to stay indoors than out. And what better to do than turn on the radio? What? You don’t like what’s playing locally? How about checking out other radio stations across the country? No, I’m not out of my mind. And yes, you can listen to other radio stations from across the country, however, not on your typical AM/FM radio. I’m talking via your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad and accessing an internet stream. Yes, you actually listen to the same thing as what someone else with the AM/FM radio listens to, except you’re .getting yours from the internet, streamed to your device.

Today, I’ll be reviewing Stitcher Radio for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, a radio and audio podcast app that plays a huge list of podcasts and audio news as well as local radio stations from across the US. You’re getting two for the price of one, both a radio app and a podcast app. Listen to your favorite podcasts as well as to your favorite American radio station. It does’t matter if the station is across the country in New York or California, you can listen to it simply by loading the app. Plus, there’s a huge list of podcasts you can subscribe to and listen. You’re getting the best of both worlds.

For those who want to skip over all the detailed review and just want a summary, you can jump to the review summary

When you launch the app, you are provided with the main screen which offers various different buttons and selections. The Front Page will display a front page like page of front page news, similar to a mobile version of a website with a few very popular or newsworthy titles. Tapping on those will play an audio of that particular news. During playback, you can tap on the thumbs up/down (like/dislike) buttons, the “star” (favorite) button, the play/pause button and the skip to next button. There is also a Facebook, Twitter and envelope (send email) button where you can share the currently playing audio with your Facebook and/or Twitter friends. You can review the audio by 30 seconds by tapping on the counterclockwise arrow with the 30 inside or bookmark the current audio by tapping on the bookmark icon. You can also select your position in the audio by dragging your finger on the progress bar to move it.

The On Demand Stations button will display a list of different categories for listening ranging from comdedy to news, sports and many others. If you scroll far enough, you’ll also find an alphabetical listing of the sources as well. So if you want to find material from CNN, simply scroll down to the C’s. Or you can also type in your search term by tapping on the empty search field at the top.

The Live stations will take you to a screen where you can either tap on the Search Nearby Stations which will load your current location into the app and provide you with a listing of nearby radio stations. Or, you can select Internet Only which will bring up a list of Internet Only stations. Or, you can also select the state and be provided with a list of radio stations by state and then by city. However, it is limited to local stations in the USA.

My Stations will show a list of radio stations you’ve favorited either by tapping on the “+” button or the star button. You can remove or delete them simply by tapping on the Edit button and then select those you want to delete.

The bookmarks button will display a list of your bookmarked audio files. You can also remove your bookmarks by simply swiping from right to left on the audio file you wish to delete and then tap on the Delete button.

At the very bottom of the app is the “Tap to refresh all shows on Stitcher”. If you tap on that bar, the app will load and access the internet to refresh all the shows.

The app is fairly straightforward and simply enough to use without requiring a lot of figuring out.

  • Supports listeners from outside US

  • FREE
  • Initial “how to” screen

I Didn’t Like:

  • no volume slide
  • no artist or song title info
  • No landscape support
  • No bug submit feature
  • No record feature
  • No manual podcast or radio station adding
  • No Sleep feature
  • No offline support
  • No video playback support
  • Ad supported

Here are my observations:

I Liked:

Easy to use

The app is fairly easy to figure out and use. Most things are either buttons or bars. You tap to select an action.

Listen to a live radio stream

The app streams the on air radio across the internet to your iPhone in real time allowing you to listen to the radio without needing an AM/FM radio.

Huge selection of radio stations and podcasts

The app offers a huge list of radio stations and podcasts to choose from ranging from comedy to sports, news, technology, etc.

List by audio source

Rather than searching through the various categories, you can also search by scrolling through the alphabetic listing of podcasts

Facebook and Twitter integration

The app supports sharing via Facebook and/or Twitter and of course, the typical email.

Like/Dislike buttons

Those who like the “like” or “dislike” or more specifically, the thumbs up or down button, will be happy that it’s supported on the app.

Supports listeners from outside US

I like that this app is available to listeners from outside the US as many times, like Pandora, for example, the radio stream is not available to listeners outside the country.

Background music playback supported

I like being able to play the radio stream in the background. I Like!

FREE

I like free and I’m sure that you do too, although it is ad supported.

Initial “how to” screen

When running the app for the first time, there’s a screen that shows up explaining the main buttons and what they do.

I Didn’t Like:

No Volume slider

Unfortunately, there is no volume slider in the app and most of you know how much I prefer to have a volume slider.

No Artist and title info

When streaming a radio station, the app doesn’t support artist and song title info. I always prefer to be able to view who the artist is and the song title when playing any internet radio stream as it is very helpfull

No landscape mode support

Unfortunately, this app doesn’t support landscape mode.

no bug submit feature

Although you can send an email to the developers from within the app, there doesn’t appear to be an attachment of a log file that could lead me to think that there is a bug submit feature. I may be wrong about this so please correct me if I am wrong.

No record feature

I would like to be able to record the live stream of the music so that I can listen to it later.

No manual podcast/radio adding

I would like to be provided with a way to manually add a new station simply by inputting the link or url of a podcast stream or xml file or even a direct radio stream url.

No Sleep feature

Unfortunately, there’s no sleep feature which is too bad, because I tend to listen to music before I go to bed. This would really make the app much better.

No offline support

As this is mainly a radio streaming app, it’s not surprising that it doesn’t offer offline support. However, if there is a record feature in conjunction with the alarm as mentioned previously, this could easily be a radio PVR allowing you to listen to the programs in your own time without the need for an internet connection. This is another suggestion.

Ad supported

The app may be free but it’s ad supported. However, there is an ad bar located near the bottom. It’s unfortunate that there isn’t a paid version.

No video playback support

One of my biggest disappointments is when I found out that a video podcast stream wasn’t going to play a video but audio instead. I understand that this is a “radio” app but when I can simply visit a website and view videos or launch other similar podcast app, I was expecting to be able to do the same on this app. Unfortunately, the “video” didn’t load.

Review Summary

Stitcher Radio for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad offers both real-time radio station streaming and an on-demand podcast streaming and playback in one app. The huge list of podcasts will ensure that everyone will find something they like. And choose from the various local radio stations from across the USA to listen to without needing the radio. Plus, share your favorite shows and stations with your Facebook and Twitter friends simply by tapping on the thumbs up or down buttons. Plus, it’s FREE!
