In this day of technology and digital innovations, you’d think that the digital clocks we use would look so different from the ones we used way back when, but when you visit your nearest Wal-mart, what do you see? The same boring old clocks that probably hasn’t been moved since the 70s. Obviously, technology and innovation hasn’t hit our trusty old clocks yet, or haven’t they? If you have an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, you can get a much better and more functional alarm clock than those twenty dollar or more ones at Wal-mart. Mind you, your iPhone costs a tad bit more than twenty dollars.
Today, I’ll be reviewing Nightstand Central Free for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, a beautiful looking background digital alarm clock that can also double as a nightstand or desk stand clock. This clock displays a stunningly beautiful artistic background with a retro flip style clock display along with the current weather for your location. Can your old twenty dollar Wal-mart clock do that? But, this clock doesn’t play the radio. Okay, the twenty dollar clock will beat it in that respect. However, this app is free.

Nightstand Central is mainly an alarm clock app that offers a beautiful, stunning background picture ranging from an image of an October sky, a view of a clear blue sea, a road in the countryside and much more. You can pick and choose from the twenty different stunning images available to be used as your app’s background. The app also offers a display of your location’s current weather including the current temperature in either Fahrenheit or Celsius as well as the day’s highs and lows. The app supports landscape mode for displaying the clock so you can tilt the iPhone over so that you can enjoy the beautiful background. It supports multiple background alarms so you can set different alarms to ring at different times on different days and either repeat or have it ring once. Since it offers background support and if enabled, that means the alarm will still ring even if you forgot to leave Nightstand Central running in the foreground, which will still remind you of that ever important appointment should you forget.
The free version of the app, only supports the default alarm sounds so if you wanted to use your iPod’s music for the alarm, you would need to purchase the full version. The background alarms can be enabled or disabled, depending on your preferences as it allows you the option to either ensure that the alarm will sound even if the app isn’t running in the foreground or not. The weather display, if enabled will display the current weather information for your location. You can also add different locations as well if desired. There’s a choice of displaying in Fahrenheit or Celsius and you can set the update interval from 5 to 30 minutes. The app can auto lock from 5 minutes to 4 hours or never for both when on battery and when charging. Choose from the twenty different wallpaper images as your clock’s background. If you wish to set different images to display in sequence, you would need to purchase the full version. There’s the option to set the display in 24 hour clock, hide the seconds display and displaying the next alarm. Plus, the app also supports gestures such as sliding the finger up to brighten the display and down to darken it and shaking the iPhone to snooze the sounding alarm.
As the app is ad-supported, you will find an ad bar at the top of your clock when you first launch the app. The ad will display for a few seconds and then it will disappear. Or, you can tap on the “x” button on the ad to make it disappear. The full version, aside from supporting music alarms, removing the ads, also offers a sleep timer, the ability to set your own photos as the background and setting multiple photos for background display, more customization and the flashlight.

easy to use
The app is fairly easy to use. Simply tap on the tabs or buttons to select certain actions.
Clock display supports landscape mode
Although it’s expected that such an app with a beautiful background would support landscape mode to provide a much better viewing and display, it is still nice to know that the app supports landscape mode in the clock display.
background alarm supported
The app supports background alarm which means that if enabled, the alarm will still sound even if you don’t have Nightstand Central running in the foreground.
multiple alarms supported
This is probably not a big deal since many alarms offer multiple alarms but it is still important as you would want to be able to set different alarms at different times and on different days and if you were stuck with only one alarm at a time, that would be very frustrating to use and deal with.
weather display
Your location’s current weather conditions are displayed on the app along with the day’s highs and lows. This is a nice feature that I’m sure many will find useful. Aside from simply displaying your current location’s weather, you can also set to have it display a different city’s weather as well. However, you can’t switch between the cities without going into the settings and making the changes. The app won’t support displaying different city’s weather at the same time.
enabling or disabling display of seconds
I am someone who likes to be able to view the seconds on a clock and I sometimes find some apps don’t offer the ability to display them. Thankfully, this app supports the displaying or hiding of the seconds, depending on your preference.
auto lock setting
You can allow the iPhone to auto lock based on the available choices of 5, 20, 30 minutes, 1 or 4 hours or never when it’s on battery and when it’s plugged in.
20 different beautiful wallpapers
One of the best features of this app is the number of different beautiful wallpapers you can set and use as the background of the clock. Choose from Starry Sky, Blue Edge, Forest and many others. If you get the full version, you can select the wallpapers that will be displayed in rotation.
AM/PM/24 hour clock support
Depending on your preferences, you can display the typical AM/PM time or view the time in the 24 hour format.
display next alarm
I always like to be able to view the next alarm time on the clock, so I like this feature as it informs me of the next alarm that is coming up.
gestures support
The app supports gestures such as sliding the finger upwards to brighten up the screen display and downward to darken it. Also, if you shake the iPhone, the alarm will snooze.
FREE
The app is free. What more can I say?
no landscape mode support in settings
Unfortunately, the app doesn’t support landscape mode when going into the Settings, however, it’s understandable, as it does work better when it’s displayed in portrait.
no bug submit feature
There is no bug submit feature, although there is an Email Support feature that will compose an email for you to send to the developer. I would prefer to be able to also attach a log file. I did encounter a time when I launched the app and the screen was completely black. I couldn’t do anything and ended up having to force my iPod Touch to turn off and restart it. Having a bug submit or even a log file could have helped in that case to prevent future incidents from happening.
Premium features only offered in full version
It’s not surprising that some premium features are only offer in the paid $1.99 full version. Such features include music alarms support, sleep timer, ability to set your own photos as wallpaper background, setting multiple photos to be displayed as background, flashlight, screen display customization and of course, the removal of ads.
ad-supported
Although it’s “free”, it is however, ad-supported. When you launch the app, you will notice an ad bar at the top of the screen, which goes away after a certain number of seconds. So, those who dislike ad-supported apps may find this a big turn off.
Nightstand Central Free for iPhone and iPod Touch offers a stunning, beautiful background for your iPhone alarm clock, that makes a great night table clock or a desk clock that you can place and be able to use and enjoy. Not only do you get to set multiple alarms, but it also support background alarms. As well, if it’s connected to the internet, it will update and display the current weather conditions where you are. For the great price of free, you can’t go wrong with this. Check it out and see for yourself!
